Stats Australia post their second highest total in ODI against South Africa

They had a good chance of breaking 434. The final over was bowled well by South Africa.

In the hindsight, 434 and 438 in 2006 is so insane. That was a time when 250 was a big score, and 300 was almost impossible to chase. And Australia crossed 400 by a large margin, and South Africa chased it down!

The most incredible ODI match ever (other than that game in 2019 that ended in a draw....).

Yes. 2019 is painful. I watch tennis too, and was supporting NZ in the CWC final and Federer at Wimbledon!

Glad to see someone who was also on the same boat as me. I was switching between the two channels. History was being made at Center Court and Lord's just few kms away from each other.

I watch as much tennis as possible, but the 2019 final has a weird place in my mind because I’m so emotionally detached from it because my mind was… elsewhere lol

Honourable mention also to the tied game between us and SA at the 99 WC too.

Can’t believe they just ended such a an important game as a tie rather than playing another super over to decide a winner

I remember watching that match live. Absolutely unbelievable stuff.

Even in "foresight" that game was insane. Felt like we were watching something from the future in real time.

300 wasn't almost impossible to chase in 2006 bruh

That's one way to not see Marnus fail again, I suppose 😐

I feel like I would have been shitting myself if I was marnus
Imagine it. Everyone is carving up, you're in a slump and these guys are getting centuries for fun. Then someone gets out in the 45th over... You basically have to come out guns blazing or look like you're wasting an amazing platform, which increases the likelihood you screw up and get out in an embarrassing way for fuck all.
It's a lose lose.

u/RetroChampions 1d ago
and even if you do perform fans are not gonna take the knock too seriously when the top 3 all scored centuries

u/Karjalan New Zealand 7h ago
Yeah exactly, best case scenario you do pretty well, get like 20 odd off 14 and everyone is like "well, it was decent, but everyone else did better and didn't make a large contribution".

Man, 2nd highest? What's their highest? That must have been a total annihilation of whatever unlucky team to be on the receiving end!!

434 vs same team

u/DePraelen Netherlands 1d ago
And Australia lost. An absolutely bonkers game. 872 runs scored in an ODI Match.

Yup, remember it like it was yesterday. My team lost but still I feel lucky to watch it live.

The bowlers have done a great job, I reckon Australia are about fifteen runs short

OK, time for a trivia stats question.
Australia had three batsmen scoring centuries. That's the first time it's been done by an Australian team, and the fifth time in all ODIs (South Africa vs West Indies in 2015, vs India in 2015, and vs Sri Lanka in 2023; England vs Netherlands in 2022).
But what's the closest a team has come to having FOUR centurions in an ODI innings?

So, Liam Livingstone 66* as the 4th highest scorer in the innings? Could be.
EDIT: I've done a bit of looking into this.
Livingstone was the 4th highest scorer in that innings with 66*, so he was 34 runs away from being the 4th centurion.
TL, DR: That is indeed the closest that any team has come to having 4 centurions.
As far as I can tell, there have only been 6 occasions where the 4th highest scorer in an ODI innings has made more than 66:
South Africa 392/6 vs Pakistan in 2007. AB de Villiers made 67 and his team mates scored 72, 78, and 88*, so they were collectively 95 runs away from having 4 centurions.
South Africa 353/3 vs Netherlands in 2007. Graeme Smith made 67 and his team mates scored 72, 75, and 128, so they were collectively 86 runs away from having 4 centurions.
South Africa 365/2 vs India in 2010. Loots Bosman made 68 and his team mates scored 87, 102, and 104, so they were collectively 45 runs away from having 4 centurions.
Australia 376/9 vs Sri Lanka in 2015. Shane Watson made 67 and his team mates scored 68, 72, and 102, so they were collectively 93 runs away from having 4 centurions.
Pakistan 375/3 vs Zimbabwe in 2015. Azhar Ali made 79 (the highest ever 4th-highest score!) and his team mates scored 86, 89*, and 112, so they were collectively 46 runs away from having 4 centurions.
England 481/6 vs Australia in 2018. Eoin Morgan made 67 and his team mates scored 82, 139*, and 147, so they were collectively 51 runs away from having 4 centurions.

u/_BetterRedThanDead 22h ago
Yeah, that's the closest, unless there's an innings with two centurions and two people with more than 83—if that counts.

It’s winter in Australia so they are playing in the north of the country, Mackay is a town like 1000km north of Brisbane.
