I think he is probably that last West Indies player with 100 test caps. Massively underperformed despite known for his patience and temperament required at test level.

His problem is that on a good he he'd get 30(120)

Yeah that starts he is not able to convert them into big scores.

That's his big score

Roach and holder might be able to get to a 100 caps but both seem to have been dropped, brathwaite hasn’t been too promising but still the best wi bat since gayle

Roach is not going to be in the plans for sure as they are probably grooming Jayden Searles, Shamar Joseph, Alzarri Joseph to be the frontline bowlers. Yeah, West Indies are not going to play that many test matches in coming future and Jason Holder is also a discard from the test squad.

any reason why holder is a discard, I don’t think he’s been too bad recently. Roach has been good as well but ig they want younger options

It’s more that Holder wants to play T20 leagues instead of Tests

given how few non big 3 countries play nowadays (generally 12 each cycle) he might be among the last period from a non big 3 nation, everyone outside newzeland and the big 3 are playing fewer tests now

His record while modest is better than any batter in the last decade for WI. He's 10th all time on the runs list.. seems foolish to move on if there's no one obvious to replace him, and his experience.

One of the most important issues, I believe, is that the West Indies test cricket board does not invest and believe in its players. They dropped Alick Athanze, who was performing better than other players - he scored 82 against England in England to help WI build a strong total. You have to back these players instead of shuffling around. Send them to domestic first-class competitions elsewhere, like County cricket in England.

One idea I really support is that the Australia Cricket Board, BCCI, and ECB create a plan which promotes players from lower-tier nations to play in their domestic competitions. This will really help cricket grow and help test format which is dying outside the Big 3. Also - make ICC ban 2-match series and provide funds for a potential third test to cover for any losses that the hosting nation faces.

That's more a Sammy issue. Sammy came in and made huge changes. He is the selector and coach

i think he’s in so many roles that it’s effectively hurting wi cricket. coach, selector and coach of a cpl team just lets him get away with a lot with no repercussions. let alone the fact that these r all more or less conflict of interests(s) as well

The West Indies board can't get players into the CC though, the County teams have to believe that a player will actually be useful to their team and make a contract offer, and none of the current WI batters are anywhere close to that level. And there are way too many FC players in India to make room for any overseas players (has an "overseas" player ever played in a Ranji Trophy match??)

From the Australian stand point I don't think we have enough teams to allow spots to be open for that many international players really. England and India probably a better route as most of the spots here in Aus will be taken by development players etc.

England have the best chance to make this happen given their county structure with multiple divisions, and they don't have the blocker than Ranji does with international players. But there's no reason we couldn't get international players in at high level Grade Cricket from smaller countries - maybe you get some emerging talent going to this, then the main squad getting sent to County.

The problem is there are twin pressures on the counties - you have to be good enough but also cheap enough. West Indian Test players are going to be more expensive than the likes of Keith Dudgeon or Caleb Jewell, but the current crop bar one or two - who have long term county experience already and are nearly exclusively bowlers - aren't going to be worthwhile.

Most div 2/3 county teams would froth having some more international players. Until some profit sharing comes in, WI need to make some arrangements to help themselves - I'm sure they can organise some bunking situations for accom with other players to keep it cheap, forgo the match fees

We have many states that don't do well in cricket that we have to improve before starting to care about other countries

He’ll play the 4 day comp and score 700 runs, he’s far and away always been the best opener in the region, just having a rough patch not to mention conditions have been really tough for batting

12

u/Ok-Relationship-2746 New Zealand 20h ago

"Rough patch"

He has scored a grand total of three 50s in 36 innings since his last hundred (which was against Zimbabwe). Sixteen single-digit scores in that time. Seven other innings between 11 and 20. That's not a patch, that's an epidemic.

3

u/iIIchangethislater 21h ago

Aside from a 200 in the first game of the season he had a horrible year, and an old guy having a rough patch is much easier to drop, but if the cupboard is so empty that John Campbell averaging 25 can walk back into the team after his ban it still seems premature to discard Brathwaite entirely if that is the plan. There's no combination of Campbell, Mikyle Louis and Tage Chanderpaul (if he gets another chance) which inspires much confidence against international class bowlers, is there? At least we know Brathwaite on his day can get it right.

3

u/NoExplanation6203 West Indies 20h ago

Yeah pushing out Kraigg is definitely a Sammy move, I like Louis but his technique is really suspect he plays at everything with very hard hands. I’m not a fan of Campbell at all, but if we’re dropping Kraigg you probably have to play Campbell. Unfortunately we don’t play any 4 day before the India tests cause I would have been interested in seeing if Cephas Cooper and Raymond Perez could follow up the good form they showed this season.

1

u/Imaginary_Cookie_884 Canada 15h ago

y was tage even dropped in the first place? looked like him and kraig did a good job of softening the new ball usually

2

u/nickdonhelm 22h ago

They should experiment him in middle order.

4

u/Due_Cricket1885 22h ago

That sure took long but I can respect him for playing 100

4

u/dzone25 India 22h ago

Bit weird, I know he's very average but the truth is he's only 32 and the team lacks experienced heads - seems a bit early

1

u/TheScarletPimpernel Gloucestershire 5h ago

I think average is harsh. I'd be more inclined to say he'd perform better in a better team where there wasn't so much pressure on him to be the main runscorer.

1

u/Severe-Ad-6378 Bangladesh 17h ago

Just play him in world cup finals

2

u/Imaginary_Cookie_884 Canada 15h ago

yeah test world cup finals. if u mean wtc finals, it’s gonna be a long time before wi ever makes it there

-1

u/Severe-Ad-6378 Bangladesh 14h ago

The link is not working. Are we talking about Carlos Braithwaite? The one who hit those 4 sixes

2

u/Imaginary_Cookie_884 Canada 14h ago
