literally 2084 Posting "AI" content to /r/cyberpunk will result in a permanent ban
It's prohibited by the first rule of the subreddit.
Cyberpunk isn't just a cool aesthetic. It's a critique of how technology is abused by capitalists to exploit people, strip us of our humanity, and destroy the world. Don't create the torment nexus.
It looks like shit and you're a loser for using it instead of putting some heart, inspiration, and energy into your own art, writing, etc. And it's making you dumber and lazier. Please show us you care about something. I know it's hard, but it's worth it.
Most of you have been great about downvoting and reporting this when you see it. Please keep it up! It helps out our community a lot.
And if you disagree with this post and want to argue or ignore it, take heed of the previous paragraph: our users demonstrably do not want this slop and downvote it to 0 every single time. You're wasting your time.

The Rise and Fall of a Cyberpunk Netrunner
Yo, chooms,
Been vibing on that classic cyberpunk city arc lately, the way a shiny, high-tech dream always seems to crash into a gritty, neon-soaked dystopia. Think Night City’s corpo towers looming over the slums, or MegaTokyo’s holographic haze hiding the street’s edge. It’s a slide that feels inevitable.
So, I got to thinking and wrote up a deep dive on a fictional city I’m calling The Spire. It tracks the whole decay cycle: from its starry-eyed founding as a tech utopia, through the corporate power grabs and the rise of the undercity, to the final collapse where all that’s left is rusting chrome and hollow slogans. If you’re into it, you can check it out the Substack.
But I’m not just here to plug my scribbles. I wanna hear your takes:
- What’s the most real trigger for a city’s fall? Corpo greed running wild? A government imploding? Maybe an AI that goes full Skynet?
- Is the “utopia” phase even legit, or just a slick marketing scam that everyone buys into until it’s too late?
- What’s one small, grimy detail, a sound, a smell, a street-level quirk that makes a cyberpunk city feel alive to you?
Drop your thoughts, netrunners. Let’s jack into this. The sprawl’s waiting.

Movies and Shows That Fly Under The Radar?
We all know the main list of stuff that's cyberpunk. Blade Runner, Dredd, Total Recall, The Fifth Element, Altered Carbon, etc... Common sentiment seems to be that these are all good, or at least enjoyable, and popular.
But what are your recommendations that don't get enough love? What's slipped under the radar but is worth a watch?
My own submission is "Mute." It never became terribly popular, and when it did get some attention there was a lot of criticism since pedophilia was a very central theme, and the story seems winding and unfocused at face value. The threads all wrap up pretty spectacularly though, the world is cyberpunk and gritty, and overall I think it's a great movie.

Syndicate (1993)
So, I've been mulling over this for a good bit; this amazing game is considered cyberpunk royalty because it takes a ton of cues from Bladerunner, you can hack people, use mood altering drugs, and cyberise your agents from basic humans right up to T-850's, if you will.
But...you aren't fighting the system, you are the system, fighting against other corporate overlords that feel that they should be the system.
And you wind up dominating the world that you will oversee perpetually from your dirigible up in the sky, like an ivory tower with an intangible foundation.
Doesn't that completely remove the "punk" from Cyberpunk"?

The Big Book of Cyber Punk, edited by Jared Shurin is a great sampling of the genre
Can't believe I read this beast of a book in 2025, but once I got started it was hard to put down. And the short story anthology format meant that even if a story dragged a bit, it ended soon. Here are some of the tales and authors that jumped out as new (to me, at least) and worth exploring some more in addition to many greats.
- "Operation Daniel" – Kalid Kaki
- "Crispr Than You" – Ganzeer
- "Wi-Fi Dreams" – Fabio Fernandez
- "Aboukela52" – Wole Talabi
- "Keep Portland Wired" – Michael Moss
- "The Endless" – Saad Hossain
- "The Girl Who Was Plugged In" – James Tiptree, Jr. (this author's back story is wild)
- "I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter" – Isabel Fall
So, what have you been reading that you've not been able to put down?

Cyberpunk History Question
Hey guys! I'm currently running a Cyberpunk RED campaign (I know this isn't that sub) and I'm thinking of introducing a character who would have been an adult during the 80's/90's, when films like Blade Runner and Hackers were coming out and books like Neuromancer and Snow Crash were being published. For those who don't know, RED is set in the year 2045, but the pre-history to this darker timeline is very much our own, with the prophets of technological change being referred to as "Gibsons."
My objective with this character right now is that they're an aged corporate personality who loves the cash but hates what this world, and its people, have become -- mostly so he can call my PCs "cyberpunks" in a voice dripping with derision.
With that in mind, I want to ask those of you who were adults in the 80's and 90's: what did your peers think of the genre? Did you encounter people who just hated this shit, who couldn't wait for it to die down?
Personal stories, anecdotes, or even just references to half-remembered opinion pieces touching on the genre are all welcome!

Some of my cyberpunk art
Please give me advise and critiques on how to improve my work within this genre. Much of my work is inspired by Philip K. Dick, Gibson, J G Ballard, and cyberpunk 2077.
