• Both start as kind-hearted, polite and humble but easily scared and unassuming orphaned kids lacking confidence in themselves
• Both lost their parents in tragic incidents (Simon's parents being crushed to death in a cave-in during a earthquake and Tails' parents being taken to be roboticized) due to the henchmen of the antagonistic rulers of their worlds (Lordgenome's Beastmen and Dr. Robotnik's SWATbots)
• Both start out as lonely but find a confident optimistic blue haired supportive older brother figure (Kamina and Sonic)
• Both eventually join a team of freedom fighters to take back their world (Team Dai-Gurren and the Freedom Fighters)
• Both start out as sidekicks but eventually grow into their own and become heroes in their own right, even becoming skilled pilots of machinery
• Both are empowered by a specific energy that has immense power (Spiral Energy and Chaos Energy) and use objects that use that power (The Core Drill Necklace and Gurren Lagann and The Chaos Emeralds and the Power Rings)
• With this energy, they can become multiple forms that massively increase their power to absurd levels (Arc Gurren and Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann and Turbo Tails and Hyper Tails)
• Both merged with every version of themself across the multiverse, becoming their strongest form (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and later Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Titan Tails)

This always seemed like such a obvious MU for both so I'm surprised no one thought of it before I did.
