Medical Bill sent to Collections (Sister)

I originally posted this in hospital bills until I got redirected here:

So, my sister gave birth in May and she was supposed to be covered by Medicaid.

Fast tracking to now- during May she had contacted a Medicaid case worker about the Medicaid issue and she was told through Email from the case worker that ANOTHER person who was working her case in neighboring city made an error hence why her Medicaid kept showing up as inactive when the hospital staff tried to run it. So through Email, they let my sister know there was no lapse in judgement. She was already out of the hospital by then. During that time my sister was having really bad postpartum depression and didn't let the hospital know that they need to run her Medicaid again because as the case worker said, there was no lapse in judgement (so during May it should be active). They've since sent it over to collections and she's been getting calls from the debt collectors.

Is it too late for her to do anything about this now that it's September? I have googled and it says that it's not 'really' too late for her to call the hospital billing department over this and she will tomorrow morning- but I just want to make sure that her waiting this off doesn't mean she's sealed the debt over it to belonging to the collections agency. Any advice or knowledge would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Should I use Avant? Or ACCC DMP?

I have $6,585 in credit card debt and my financial situation has recently changed for the better. I’m looking for lowered interest so I can pay off my 2 cards by next year without interest getting in the way. One card has a ~$5500 balance, 35% APR (I know 🤦) $200 minimum payment, and the other has $1,000 balance, 26% APR, $35 min payment.

I don’t qualify for 0% APR balance transfers because my credit score is 624 and I have high credit usage on each card.

I was thinking of going with Avant for a personal loan (48 months, $198 min) or using an ACCC Debt Management Program, (still waiting on the call from the counselor, so unsure what they’ll be able to do)

Any feedback or other recommendations? Would it be wise to transfer the debt to a personal loan, or would it be better to just pay it off as is? Any other places that you recommend with low APR options for someone with my credit score? Idk, I feel very unsure about what to do, if I can even trust these institutions, I just want to pay it off 🙃

Re open bankruptcy case?

Filed chapter 7 bankruptcy in jan 2024. I was at fault in a vehicle accident sept 2023. Prior to ever filing bankruptcy. I never heard anything about it so couldn’t include in the bankruptcy at the time. Fast forward to today (almost 2 years) I’ve gotten 2 letters saying I’m responsible for the other parties vehicle damage. I’m in Indiana. did not have car insurance at time of accident

Since this accident happened prior to filing, could my case be reopened to include this?

Any bankruptcy attorneys here to chime in on this?

In a hard situation with collections, I’m worried of being sued

To give context, last year a little over a year ago I was riding a bike and a car hit me that I didn’t see, this was deemed my fault and take responsibility over it. I was reached out by a company (TL Thompson) saying they were representing State Farm and that the minimum payment I could pay was $100/month, the original debt being around $4400 (down to $3200 at the time of writing this). For the past year I have been consistently paying on the date that I agreed to send them the minimum ($100) on each month, but just recently I lost my job and have had some unfortunate circumstances that are leaving me almost completely broke. I had sent an email saying that the max I can do is $50/month right now or a settlement of $1000 that my family said they could help me with. I only get money currently from working online as self employment income, which I don’t make much on and sending $50/month is a HUGE stretch for me right now (and I had mentioned this), but I am dreading what they will say, if I’ll be sued in court for this, and that they won’t work with me here because of the fact the debt is $3200 currently. I’ve tried so much to research these things and everything I read only makes me more confused of what will happen, so I’m writing this mostly for peace of mind. I’m actively working on trying to get a job so I can continue making payments, but I’m dreading being sued because I am in Wisconsin in the middle of nowhere with no car living under my boyfriends paychecks, and I have no realistic way to get to a court (it is far from me). Am I completely out of luck here, or do I have a strong case from having a year of consistent on time payments and willingness to work with them all this time? From things I’ve read, I’ve seen mixed things saying collection agencies are understanding of things like this as long as they are getting some money monthly, but then others saying they will relentlessly sue if it’s over $1000 debt even if you’re actively trying to pay them at least something. In my situation am I likely to be sued? I am very scared but am trying to work with them, but there is only so much I can realistically do here until I get employment.

Advice Needed - Sued by Capital One

I am being sued by Capital One for a debt of almost $1500 from a Discover student credit card I took out when I was 18. Unfortunately I do not have an income currently, and I would much rather get this settled and figured out without having to go to court. I’m required to respond to the summons by a week from today. I haven’t been able to get ahold of the attorneys (The Moore Law Group) and was only provided a toll free number. I’d be willing to set up a payment plan, I could figure out $50 monthly at most. How do I go about this? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Medical debt and collections

Please, I beg of you all, please be nice to me. I know I'm stupid, I let this spiral and I don't really know what to do.

So, a few years ago I started seeing a psychiatrist through talkiatry (online care) and they had me upload all my insurance info and gave me options that were covered by my insurance.

My family has an HSA and difference card, and I think what the difference card is is a card that is linked to my dad's employer. I'm 22 which is probably old enough to know these things but I don't and I feel so stupid, but all my life I know we've never had to pay for medical care, my insurance covers specialists 100% after we reach our deductable which is high. But my dad's employer covers the deductible through the difference card. So any bills we get, we use either the HSA or that.

Sometimes when I'm at school it takes me awhile to get back to get the difference card last year I had 2 or so bills that needed paid, by the time I got it I thought I paid them both but it only paid one and then it went to collections. I called collections and tried to pay using the difference card but at that point bc the card is in my dad's name they needed him to give permission to use it. I was too scared he'd get mad at me and I sort of ignored it... Then eventually when we met our deductible for the year the difference card stopped working on bills I kept getting from them, when insurance should be covering it all. It's a mess. So now all of those are in collections. I have absolutely no clue what to do, how to navigate this. I called talkiatry and they said that bills before were covered by insurance so I'm not sure what's going on and I just need some advice on what to do, what phone calls to make, how to navigate this.

I don't want to go to jail and I should have nipped this in the bud when it started but when it started I was also in an extremely stressful time in life with stuff going on and I have a horrible habit of avoiding things that scare me which I know is dumb and only makes things worse. But this is the situation I'm in :(

Is it better to consolidate debt?

Hello everyone, new to the group but been looking through for sometime.

Would ie be better to consolidate my wife and I credit card debt? Currently I have $10,714 and my wife have $13,757 and both have a intrest rate of 18.00%. I am the only one employed currently while she is in school, I am also military and have 2 toddlers and a child on the way. I bring in roughly $6004 a month but after the 15th paycheck I have about $1130 remaining and after the end of month paycheck I have about $500 left. That's from every bill and includes groceries. It doesnt include gas which is anywhere from $20-$38. Would it be better to take a loan out and use that to pay our credit card debt off since we'd only be paying 1 interest rate verses two 18% separately? What are some other options I have? Any help is appreciated.

P.S. i know this isn't as much as some of these posts but it's a scary thing as ive always had the means to fully pay off our debts without it getting this far ahead.

Apartment rent collection

Hello everyone,

Eight months ago, I moved out of my apartment after settling all the amounts I owed at that time and even paying the outrageous fees they charged me, despite the fact that I gave them two months’ notice of my move. Now, eight months later, I just found out that there is a collection in my name that was filed in July 2025, even though I never received a call or notice to pay anything in the first place.

What can I do in these cases, since I really don’t owe them anything? I’m new to this, so please excuse me.

Under $10,000 in credit card debt. Overwhelmed with researching the best method. Please help.

I have roughly 9,000 in credit card debt, on two separate maxed out capital one cards. I would like to get it on one card and just pay that one monthly. How should I go about that? Thanks so much in advance for any help.

Will this small debt affect my credit score?

I received a mail notice from a collections agency saying I owe a small amount of around 125 to a doctor who is now retired. Is this worth calling and settling it for a smaller amount? I read that medical bills under 500 aren’t being put on credit reports but not sure if that has been reversed or not

Cash out stock to pay off debt?

I invested about $1,000 many years ago into Tesla. Today it’s sitting at about $6,000. I’ve never wanted to sell because I keep thinking it might be enough to retire or buy a house one day with the steady growth it has. But I’m currently in $30,000 in debt and have a hard time keeping up with bills while on maternity leave. Do I pay off a credit card with cashing out my stock to have a little relief each month on payments? Or let it ride and see how much more it can earn one day.

Chapter 7? Or snowball?

Hey all. I’m 24 and have around 20k of unsecured debt with a high interest rate, like 25ish %. I have 8k of a low interest car loan and some student debt. I have been working tons and trying to keep expenses low while finish classes, but this debt is overwhelming. I really want to find a new living situation next year, as I live with a lot of roommates for low rent but it can be very stressful. With how things are going I think it would take a very long time to pay off this debt while trying to finish school too. I have heard about chapter 7 and was thinking about trying to file for myself or get an attorney. Any advice? Thank you so much.

Family Spiraling into debt

I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. My family is drowning in debt, and now my parents are also going through a divorce. I’m 21, and it feels like everything around me is collapsing at once.

I live in India and We owe over ₹2 crore (about $226,000). Around ₹1.2 crore is to banks, the rest is to finance companies and private lenders at crazy high interest rates. Every month we’re only able to pay interest ,the principal never goes down. It’s like we’re stuck in an endless nightmare.

My parents together earn about $2,500 (₹2 lakh) a month, but our EMIs and debt payments come to nearly $5,000 (₹4 lakh). That’s already a $2,500 deficit every single month, and it doesn’t even include household expenses or my sister’s and my college fees (₹28 lakh still pending). To survive, we’ve been taking more loans from high-interest lenders, which just traps us deeper.

We even have a property, but it’s already on collateral. Selling it would only give us about ₹60 lakh ($70k), which doesn’t even scratch the surface of the total debt. On top of that, we’ve defaulted on three EMIs, so the banks don’t even want to talk to us anymore.

And while all of this is happening, my parents’ marriage is falling apart. They’re in the middle of a divorce, and I don’t even know how to process it. I’m watching them break down under the weight of everything, and I feel completely powerless.

I’m confused, scared, and don’t know where to even begin. If anyone has been through anything remotely similar or knows what steps I can take, please… I need guidance.

Medical bill in collections. -$4,000

I just received a letter from a debt collector regarding an unpaid medical bill of around $4,000. Right now, I can’t afford to pay that amount.

I have a few questions: • What are my options if I can’t pay at all? • Will this already affect my credit score, and what happens if I ignore it? • If I pay it off later, will it be removed from my credit report or just marked as “paid”?

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences from others who have dealt with this

My experience with SoloSuit

I wanted to share this because when I was searching reddit for info most of the posts were old or uninformative.

I was being sued, and had an offer I was fully prepared to settle for, but decided I may as well try to negotiate a better one. Like most people, I like to avoid talking to debt collectors so I thought SoloSuit would make my life easier. So, I used them to send an offer to the collector about 6 weeks before the court date. Several weeks passed with no update, and trying to contact SoloSuit is a complete waste of time. Getting worried, I decided to call the debt collector myself to negotiate directly. They told me since I already am represented by SoloSuit, they're not allowed to talk to me directly. This went on for a few more weeks until the court date came and went.

Luckily the collector didn't show up in court so my case was dismissed. About a week later I finally get a message from SoloSuit with a counteroffer. It was a terrible deal, about 2x more than the previous offer I got directly from the collector. I ignored it and they've been harassing me ever since with threats about "continued legal action" and "we will have no choice but to escalate".

It feels like I willing signed up to give my debt collector a henchmen, like they're working for the collector not me. Next time I will get an actual lawyer or just negotiate myself. Most collectors you can do everything online now anyway. SoloSuit just adds an unhelpful uncommunicative middle man that may actually harm your case and negotiation.

Texts from "Debt Collector"

I'll be honest I just need some info/advice. This past week I have received texts on 2 different days from a 5 digit number claiming to be TrueAccord, a debt collection agency.

The thing is, I don't have any outstanding debts in my name. I have a car loan which is current on payments, and student loans which don't enter repayment until November. All other debts I've had in my name are cleared.

Normally I would just ignore the texts, assuming they're a scam, but I'm hesitant because there is an outstanding bill for medical lab work in my wife's name for about ~$300. The reason this bill has gone unpaid is because the appointment and related charges are under review by the No Surprises Helpdesk because of failure to disclose all related costs when a Good Faith Estimate was requested (she doesn't have insurance).

We attempted to contact the lab company's billing department via the 'send us a message' form on their website to inform them of the No Surprises Act claim, and request the bill not be sent to collections while the claim is under review. That was a month ago and we are still awaiting a decision on the claim.

Are these texts legit? Why are they coming to me? I'm not on the bill, and haven't gotten any emails or letters from TrueAccord. What do I do?

Should I send a pay-for-delete letter for a $144 medical collection?

Hey everyone, I could use some advice.

I have a $144 medical collection showing on my credit report. From what I’ve read, medical collections under $500 are supposed to be removed under the newer rules, but mine is still reporting.

I’m planning to pay it off, but I don’t want it to just show as “paid collection”... I’d prefer it removed completely. I drafted a pay-for-delete letter offering to pay in full if the collection agency agrees to delete it from my credit report.

Has anyone here had success with pay-for-delete on small medical debts? Would you recommend I send the letter, or should I dispute it directly with the credit bureaus since it’s under $500?

Any advice or personal experience would be awesome. Thanks!

EDIT: After I sent a pay-for-delete letter the collector sent an email the next day saying they will remove the account when it's paid in full. They also said it may take a few weeks to update, but they report every friday.

Subscription charging

So I learned today that credit card companies will move subscription charges to a replacement credit card for a canceled credit card the subscription was on without you authorizing those charges being transferred. It seems they see it as a consumer convenience for subscribed services. Is this common knowledge for everyone?

30k in debt, payoff strategy questions.

So I’m 38 years old. Just bought a house with my wife. I have currently $16k in credit card debt and owe $8,000 on my car. I have about $6k in upcoming legal expenses that are going to add to the credit card debt (dumb driving mistake).

I take home $5,080 a month. My current budget that I’ve stuck to for the last 3 months is $4k in expenses which includes $1,500 going towards debt; $500 to my car (380 is the payment and it’s a 6% interest loan), $500 towards my highest interest credit card (21% or so with $12,000 balance currently), and $500 to my other credit card (chase card with $3,000 on an installment plan at 16% interest). The $6,00 upcoming expenses I’m planning on putting on the chase card pay over time at 16% interest. In a couple months when the $6k goes on my chase card the “interest saving payment” will be about $300 a month.

My current strategy is to increase my car payment to $600-$700 monthly in order to pay off my car within a year. It’s my lowest interest loan but my insurance premium is going to shoot up in about 6 months so my thought is that if I focus on getting the car paid off I can drop collision coverage and save money when my insurance gets more expensive and then refocus on the credit cards.

The other option as I see it is to go down to my actual car payment of $380 and pump the extra money into either my chase card (lowest balance), or my other credit card (highest interest) and get my credit score up faster (650 currently with loan offers around 18%), so that I can borrow at lower interest and refinance all my debt to one payment.

I’m not sure how low I can expect an interest rate on a personal loan to be if I get my credit score up quickly. If I focus everything on my car payment I know my credit score won’t start improving for around 6 months at least, but once the car is paid off I can rapidly pay down the card balances.

If I instead focus on the credit card debt I can improve my credit score faster, but then in a few months I’m paying higher insurance premiums so I have less money going towards debt overall.

And yes, I’m dumb for several reasons, but I appreciate any advice you all can offer.

Got scammed by Rogers door-to-door agent – now collections asking for $1000. What can I do?

Hey everyone,

I really need help and advice because I feel completely scammed by a Rogers door-to-door sales agent, and now I’m being told I owe over $1000.

Here’s what happened: • Back in January 2025, I was with Telus Wi-Fi when a Rogers/Shaw sales agent came to my door. • He told me there was a special promotion where: • Rogers would pay Telus directly to cancel my existing plan so I wouldn’t be on the hook. • I’d get a $200 promotional credit on my next two bills. • Since I already had a Rogers mobile plan, he said I might be able to bundle for more discounts.

I believed him (so did my roommates who were there) and signed up under my name because I was already with Rogers for mobile.

What actually happened: • None of his promises were real. No $200 credit, no Telus cancellation paid by Rogers. • Internet speed was terrible, and he even convinced me to get Shaw TV. The installer came with a broken adapter and barely knew what he was doing. • When I tried to reach the sales guy (he had given me his personal number), he first denied making those promises and then stopped answering my calls completely.

I contacted Rogers customer service, and they said there was nothing they could do and that if I wanted to cancel, I’d have to pay $300 for breaking the contract.

I ended up canceling because the service was terrible, but Rogers kept charging me for two more months even though I wasn’t using their services. Now, a collections agency is calling me saying I owe over $1000.

This feels completely unfair because I was misled by a Rogers representative. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What can I do here — should I contact the CRTC, Commission for Complaints for Telecom Services (CCTS), or a consumer protection office?

Any advice would really help.

Seeking advice on Debt Consolidation loan

Hello all, I’ve dug myself in a hole and I would like a way out.

A couple months ago, I (M20) was basically forced to move out of my parents house with very little to no money, I had to use a credit card to pay for all expenses for a bit over a month until I was able to stabilize a little bit. All in all, it was about $3000 that is now my current balance because interest fees are almost canceling the amount of money I’m able to put in. The card I have is a shared secured card that I opened when I was like, 18-19, and the way it worked is that I was able to be latently approved to a “credit” card with the condition that I put a cash deposit down to be my credit limit. I gave them $3000 in cash and that’s what I ended up living off of for a while. When I zero out my balance and decide to cut my card, I’m going to be given whatever deposit I put in back. I was wondering if it was a smart or stupid idea to get a debt consolidation loan to zero out my balance, and then cut the card, get my deposit back, and then use it to pay off the loan?

I was (and am) way too young to realize just how bad things were going to be and now I want a way out so I can move on with my life. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance

Can I get my money back from a bank garnishment because the attorney sent a wage garnishment to the wrong employer, therefore jus took money using bank garnishment with no notice?

So here's the thing a creditor decided to garnish my wages because of a fine i owe from city taxes but the thing is he sent the wage garnishment to the wrong employer, and after that happened he secretly took money out my savings account because he had a judgment for a bank garnishment against me. This is totally not fair because they were suppose to contact my real employer or send me a notice first and i didnt receive anything at all!!!! I had no idea untill i got a notification of $1000 took from my savings. Then called my bank and they told me what happened....So my question is can I fight this in court and get my money back because of a error on the creditor??? lm willing to settle for a less amount but I need my savings back its so sad they went into my private account without me knowing.....I rather have the wage garnishment sent to the right employer so they can take out smaller amounts. I need this reversed i think I have a legitimate argument. Its not my fault the initial wage garnishment was sent to the wrong employer. They didnt have to straight go to a bank garnishment.
