Discussion So what changes would you make?
We all know this sub is the epitome of great ideas and opinions....
So what are your ideas for improving destiny, what would you add/remove/change and why, and what features do you think the game needs to add/re-add?

I think a fresh injection of melee, grenade and super abilities would bring the game up a bit - plus fresh content to use them in.
I've given Destiny: Rising a go for a few hours and whilst obviously that game has a lot of problems, the additions it makes to the Destiny formula in terms of core gameplay and game modes is fantastic insofar as I wish those features were in the core game, that has more powerful hardware than my phone, and not in a gacha trap.

Re-introduce a proper loot driven endgame. Raids, Dungeons, Conquests all should be repeatable in terms of levelling and featured gear to keep them relevant at all times. These are the pinnacle of Destiny content and should be used that way
Levelling just needs speeding up. 200-400 is a drag and telling us that Solo Ops is most efficient is not sustainable. We are effectively farming lost sectors to reach end game levels of loot (T4/T5) and while the 400-450 and soon 500-550 is being improved it’s just not enough and those +3/+2/+1 needs tweak in its level zones
Adjacent to levelling it’s just the straight fact Solo Ops is better than all others for levelling so naturally Fireteams should receive bonus loot on completions and even more so in higher difficulty content
Events should always be the +1 for tiers, it makes them so much more desirable to play and yeah, Heavy Metal wasn’t great but the loot was pretty on point, give us the loot chase and people will be there
PvP needs actual proper focus. I don’t need to say more on that. PvP passes alongside seasons, new map as a minimum, please be more, and new mode every 3 months. Just something fresh, bring checkmate back. Add weapon focusing for the comp weapon and all previous ones. It’s a ball buster out there at times
Lower the case of exotic focusing
Portal should focus on new content as much as it possibly can. End of the day one of Bungie’s biggest pain points is we are running Inverted Spire for 1000th time and it’s been in and out for the last 9 years. New content even if not the best Strike/battleground ever is looked upon so much more favourably
ROTN nailed the difficulty choice spikes and matchmaking, this needs to stay and built upon. It was class, run with the W
Raid feats did not work and only served to splinter the player base even more. Good in theory, please innovate on it but know that it was too much and a gentle change would actually help
I don’t know there’s probs more but that was off the top of my head

Changing nothing about the content itself being played? There's a lot that could be done that would immediately make some big differences. (Sure, un-vaulting the Red War and the Leviathan raids would kick ass, but I'm going to try and be reasonable here lol)
Featured gear in all forms, out the window. Damage bonus for new weapons, damage resist for new armor, the same buffs for featured exotics, and the reward score multiplier for all of those items? Gone.
Reinstate crafting for SOME items. Evergreen content like Vanguard, Crucible, Trials, Iron Banner, and Gambit gear should never be craftable. Same goes for the new Pinnacle Ops weapons. But if we're meant to play an activity for a limited time, and then move on? Like with expansion destinations, most notably? Those weapons should be craftable. Having a finish line to work towards, a point we can reach when we say we're done, is a healthy thing.
Add attunement features to dungeons. There's no crafting and no focusing currently, which makes grinding dungeons a slog. Adding gear focusing would take the edge off the dungeon grind immensely and let us feel like we have a bit of agency over how we spend our time.
Give content outside the Portal a reason to be played again. Even if it's simply the potential for items to drop above 200 power, there should be SOMETHING that's still rewarding for us to do that's beyond the Portal.

Just get rid of featured gear. Easiest layup that would make the community happy and also doesn't sound too technically challenging to do.

Im talking about long term things,
Also, with what they are doing in renegades, I'd be willing to bet that with shattered cycle or the mud season update, featured gear will be gone

There is a lot of "wrong" with D2, that needs "fixing" but I also think a lot of players just don't "want" to play D2 religiously like a second job anymore. And you cannot "change" your game out of that kind of player mentality.
I think it's time to embrace "Play Destiny when you want, how you want" direction.
Obviously, that requires dropping the "new gear buff" and easing up the repetitive power grind.
But an "easy win" would also be to drop the FOMO Season Passes, and instead have them be unlimited in time to finish.
Make a D2 players are happy to keep returning to, not a D2 players feel like forced to stick with.

u/ThisWaxKindaWaxy 20h ago
I dont want to play D2 for a while in time sense because you are actively cosplaying a poor person in D2 you try hard and don't get shit.

Featured gear needs to be changed for more build diversity. 6/8 pieces should count as a full featured gear load out.
Weekly featured raids and dungeons should come back to make them farmable as this keeps everyone playing each week. With low drop rates for exotics in raids, it is asinine that players could have to play indefinitely to get them at only a few chances a week.
All of that vaulted content? Straight the Portal on a rotating schedule. There is 8 years of content and there is no reason that any player should run out of things to play. Break up the year into 4 segments, and each segment has 25% of vaulted content in the portal with updated rewards and tiered loot.
Xur should sell a wider variety and more items each week, especially older exotics and all catalysts. This encourages players to farm more in the Portal for strange coins to purchase more.
Lastly, the gunsmith should carry a massive selection that rotates weekly of no longer obtainable gear. We would then have the reset on Tuesday for Banshee and the Friday reset for Xur that brings in players.
Let's be honest, Bungie loves their data from playtimes, so the goal is more playtime. Every change should be made to increase playtime while still being rewarding for players to keep them playing.

Id say scrap the featured gear score bonus, bring all the gear score aspect to the current full featured baseline as if im honest the 5% and 10% are superficial in 90% cases where I think those are literally equivalent to the last few seasons exclusive mods/boosts from the artifact. Also avant guard on its own is enough of a cause to use said featured gear in a one off challenge/special mode.
as conquests are both set difficulty and now repeatable add a weekly prime to them as a boost, have gms reward in rge 400 band, with ultimate for any band. Additionally avant guard is removed from preset after your 1st clear.
old raid and dungeons get a set of weekly pinnacles rotating weekly with it also activating the exotic farming. As its obvious its gonna be a long time till raids and dungeons are at say part or full parity with desert perpetual and this way thered still be incentives to run them in time being.
classic collector should be added to any activity where its able, eg exotic missions drop corresponding season loot etc.
power is largely solved by most of a and i updates, so would still pitch the rolling back power dependent on your power the season before a major dlc release eg people at 550 dont go back down to the proposed 200 but maybe 350 or something to cut out a decent chunk of the grind and allowing earlier access to t3+ loot.
These are probably the changes I feel need something akin to before the big reset or anything.

u/Slazerith 1d ago
Possibly simple changes.
Player facing perspective: Make it rain primes. Remove the chance at primes. The real grind goal was chasing Good/god rolls and playing fun things.
From the 'i want people to play my game and play for a long time perspective: Keep the slog the same, but make at least 8 ops per pve section. (Don't think the limited cruc pop would make 8 match types feasible for matching). Have each op feature a different slot of gear and make it so that it's 50/50 to get the featured item or the equivalent slot world drop.

- At least 2 new raids and 3 dungeons per year
- Total de-emphasis of RNG-based reward structures. Reintroduction of crafting for both weapons and armor, focus on earning currencies and crafting materials for deterministic purchase of rewards (some time-gated possibly) for player engagement. Large number of in-game earnable cosmetic reward chases, the best does not always go into Eververse.
- Some ways to make open world/destination content, pick up play with many randos meaningful again, not sure what this might look like
- Give up on the delusion that this is a vertical progression game, throw out power level, total focus on horizontal progression and regularly add new abilities, supers, subclasses, etc.
But all that costs money, so what you'll get is lost sector grinding with modifiers forever.

It needs activities. While people certainly still wouldn’t like a lot of EoF’s changes, I think the honest biggest pain point was the lack of a “seasonal activity” to dive into. There was no Risen/Defiance Battlegrounds to run. There was no Breach Executable. The game needs something to brawl out in that feels new and has its loot pool (maybe even the destination loot pool) that can be ran and ran and ran until it’s exhausted. After that point, roll it into the Portal and that ecosystem.
The prior system needs the portal to control loot distribution and make running old content consistently meaningful. The portal needs the prior system to give the game ‘meat on the bone’ that feels interesting to the longtime returning player.

Be rid of featured gear. Terrible system. Only serves to impose limitations on the player that didn't exist previously.
Armor set bonuses, higher stat totals, and stat tuning, is incentive enough for players to use new gear. Same goes for weapon tiers. A gun that's fully enhanced and shiny is fun to hunt, especially a god roll.
Overall, give back player agency.
Cut the level grind in half or make it so your level doesn't reset. (I have a triangle theory on how to handle the power grind)
Basically, you can not have a power grind that is long, difficult, and resets.
If the grind is long and resets, it better be easy.
If the grind is long and difficult, it can't reset.
If the grind is difficult and resets, it can't be long.
Combining all three creates the terrible feeling situation we're in. Not having any of these aspects means there's very little to work towards.
Turn the tiered loot acquisition into one that demands skill with touches of RNG in it. Depending on the difficulty of the activity, your reward should scale appropriately.
Normal = Tier 1 (0 delta)
Adept = Tier 2 (-10 delta)
Legend = Tier 3 (-20 delta)
Master = Tier 4 (-30 delta)
Grandmaster = Tier 5 (-40 delta)
On top of this dedicated, difficulty to reward quality ratio, a background RNG system would be in play where at T1, you can get a T2,3,4,5, but it'd be like a 1/10k chance. A jackpot drop.
But at GM, you'd only be able to get high T4/T5 gear. T5s not really raining per se, but more like something slightly more exciting to get than a T4 at that level. Like out of four drops, one is a T5.
It makes T5s still admirable, and each drop fuels incentive to go get another. Get that excitement going.
Make all content relevant. I'm not saying all gear should immediately be reprised under the tier system, but that all gear should contribute to power grind.
New activities? Obviously. Make them +3s the whole way through.
Old activities? They count. Make them equal to or slightly less than new gear in the grind. A +2 or +3.
Engrams dropped during an activity? Make them a +1 rather than a +3 or whatever.
Pinnacle drops? Make them a +5. They're rare rng drops anyways, so they should have value.
Everything, except vendor items, should count for the grind. It allows people to play how they want while still progressing.
And cut it out with the slowing of level gains as you climb higher. My +3s should never be dropped to a +2 or +1 as I climb higher.
If rhe Portal is here to stay, incentivise variety, and have all activities reward a proportionate amount of loot to an activities time. Basically, balance the drops to be roughly equal across all activities.
Raids and dungeons are a whole other matter because their completion rate is dependent on the skill of the team moreso than it is the activity being drawn out for a set time.
These are the things I believe are needed to bring D2 back to a good state. I've left it solely to things wrong currently, avoiding content gripes such as removed activities or future endeavors.
Ideally, in terms of content, bring it all back. I dont care how long it takes. Give me back everything that was paid for. This isn't Netflix. You can't just bring in and take away a show whenever you want. We paid specifically for each individual thing.

I'll ignore the issues with the portal and power leveling because there are already a lot of suggestions to fix those.
I have some suggestions for the long-standing issues with the game.
- Loot is boring: We have weapons from years and years ago that have solved combat in this game. And these same weapons will continue to be solutions if the sandbox continues to stay within the boundaries that we have now. For me, only a big shake-up to how weapons, abilities and enemies interact. I mean something like Mass Effect's priming-and-detonating system. Or rare perks that each have advantages and disadvantages. Or something like "Vex take 30% more arc damage on Nessus" and Nessus activities rewarding weapons with a unique arc trait "Applying arc damage and void damage to Vex stuns surrounding Vex enemies." The goal should be to create new dials for weapons, armor and enemies to interact with each other that are very powerful but also very specific. Ideally, there would be a wealth of new weapons and armor to chase, the rolls are random enough to be interesting every time and there are less best-in-slot options that power through any and all activities.
- Cosmetic rewards for difficult content: I know this competes with the eververse store or whatever but a simple way to get people to enjoy the breadth of activities and systems that this game has is to fill them with optional, rare rewards that are always desirable. They've done this before in D1; strike specific loot like the Psion Flayer Cloak or Malok's head can go a long way in making this game not feel like a bunch of menus and checklists. And I don't mean emblems or titles.
- Enemies are boring: The enemy AI needs to have more dynamic, situation-based patterns. I'm not saying that they need to create the smartest AI ever, but enemies should have better fighting tactics. Phalanxes have shields that cover their whole body. Why can't Psions hide behind the closest shielded Phalanx for protection? Arena design is also very stale, usually they're very flat with some whole-body height cover placed around.
- Stop trying to update, rotate or "deprioritize" old activities: Just leave them be, there's no ROI for refreshing strikes or bringing back old weapons. We're in year 11 of this franchise and we're trying to start a new saga. Please let it be NEW. We've redone old content over and over again for the past 10 years. They have to give it a rest at some point. Resurrecting old content will just add a stale stench to anything new that releases with it.
- Create actual interesting conflicts within the story and know when to take a break: I know this one is super subjective, but Maya Sundaresh is not interesting. We should not have immediately found another villain to fight after fighting the witness. No one sees her as threatening, so everything she does feels very forced. We could have spent some time tying up loose ends (like how in all of the Final Shape marketing they said we were going to do) instead of creating loose ends in Echoes and Heresy. Could have been super exciting to go around the solar system fixing and reclaiming control over these places that were left in ruin after the collapse. It feels like the writers don't trust themselves to write good stories that aren't basic sci-fi villain stories.
But ultimately the #1 thing that needs to change is that Bungie needs to wake-up out of their deep slumber that they seemed to be in since Forsaken. I haven't played this game in a while and I won't be playing unless Bungie shows an actual change in how they want to run this game. I put up with them phoning it in and lying about how cool the game is in the marketing for each expansion. (EoF "metroidvania" for example) This game just isn't that fun for them to keep trying to get away with that. Honestly, I'm expecting to never play this game again because Bungie is moving like they want this game to lose all its players.

This might not be an entirely popular opinion but revamping the crucible. I.e more game modes (better game modes) like even just give us back clash. Other than that get rid of the season based content and make loot more rare like the old days, it all seems like a dopamine trap now like a mobile game, which unsurprisingly they have released in the form of destiny rising which seems to show what they value in a game, just unfortunately not what the player values.$$$

u/mikedlc84 22h ago
Stop being stingy. Activities that take 45 minutes to an hour (looking at you coil) should give more than just a handful of drops that are likely to be trash anyway. You should get like 10 drops at least, but with maybe a couple of a guarantees like at least a particular weapon with a specific perk, while leaving the barrel, second perk etc up to rng to kind of keep the “balance” aspect (or armor with a spike in a specific stat, either way works). This way the players get the feeling that they’re progressing in the game instead of wasting time for however long and not getting something at least kinda worthwhile.

This is in no particular order. These ideas I also try to keep reasonably feasible to be implemented.
Basic QOL features: Ping system. Detailed perk descriptions in game. Be able to view all perk rolls for a given weapon in the game through collections. Better vault sorting and searching.
New abilities: New light 3.0 aspects to round out solar hunter, solar titan, and void warlock. New void melee options for hunter and warlock so they actually have a choice. New darkness supers, melees, and grenades for all classes, the supers being the opposite "type" of the current type that class has. If they have a roaming super, the new one will be a one off and vise versa.
More perks focused on kinetic damage. Basically flesh kinetic out as it's own "subclass" minus the actual subclass part. It should have its own "verbs" and be able to stun champs etc.
New subclass to round out the darkness subclasses.
Portal changes: Gear tier rewards decided mostly by activity difficulty. Featured gear no longer gives a score multiplier, and instead that is baked in by default. T5 gear never being a guaranteed drop to keep a loot chase in the game (controversial take I know)
Integrate Dungeons and Raids into the portal system. Mostly just to have it be a part of the power grind as an option, and to of course refresh the content and make the gear tiered.

Exotic armor should visually change ability’s they impact. for example star fire protocol change The color of the fusion grenade to look like a bright star almost blueish and if you play with the double explosion aspect the second explosion looks like the star is imploding. exotic armor that doesn’t affect ability’s should also get some visualization for example Transversive steps when the sprint reload happens you get visual effects on your gun/mag and so on for so many more

Hypothetical scenario: Bungie hires me as a consultant to put together some quick and easy wins for Destiny 2. This is what I would suggest:
Increase soft cap from 200 to 500
Add Keppler to the director
Featured/new gear bonuses and Avante Garde permanently removed from the game.
Update tiered exotic armour to tier 4. This change is retrospective so players won’t have to re-earn their exotic class items.
Retrospectively update legacy gear to display as tier 1 gear. Crafted/enhanced gear updated to display as tier 2.
Add additional upgrade option to crafted/enhanced gear. Can now enhance barrel/mag/mod slot. Doing this causes the items to display as tier 4.
Tiered weapons can now level up and slot mementos. Mementos now drop in portal activities.
Tiered weapons now compatible with crafting/enhancement. Red borders can now drop from portal activities.
These suggestions would fix the main issues with game at the moment. The portal and tiered weapon system aren’t compatible with the rest of game and the system changes made the game feel smaller.
The changes effectively make legacy activities as rewarding as portal activities and merge legacy weapons and tiered weapons into a single system.

I know my notes aren't terribly original, but just for funsies off the top of my head:
- D3 with reduced technical debt where you can play the entire Destiny narrative without the filler content (slightly modified versions of all important campaign and seasonal missions and cutscenes since 2014) and have past activities rotate into the Portal seasonally
- Unvault Scourge of the Past and Leviathan, and mash up final encounters for Eater of Worlds, Spire of Stars, and Crown of Sorrow into a single raid
- Proper new player tutorial (surges, champions, mods, stats, elements, etc.)
- Universal integration of tiered gear and crafting across all activities
- Explorer mode for all dungeons
- Titles and recognition for sherpa-ing new guardians and helping clanmates
- Shooting range / housing cosmetics based on lifetime achievements
- Resource trading within a clan
- Wave-based extraction mode where the longer you stay the more currency you get but a wipe will lose all accumulated loot
- Get rid of Syntweave templates ffs
- Bring back GM Nightfalls
- New long-term titles like original Unbroken, Reckoner, Wayfarer, etc.
- Continue to update the Director
- Bungie makes it three months in a row without bad press because they shot themselves in the foot over something stupid

SIVA. That's all that I think is needed. Looking back on the lead up to Season of the Splicer, when fans were going fanatical with the idea of SIVA returning, and made the fan-made Season of the Plague concepts. Weapons, areas, revamped Wrath, the idea of Darkness infused SIVA becoming a subclass. All of that had most of this sub frothing at the mouth and feral to jump back into D2.
Even now people are very disappointed that SIVA is not returning with its HOME LOCATION.
SIVA also stands to be a significant tool in reclaiming territory for Humanity. With it we could make FoBs (Forward Operating Bases) whenever we needed to, upgrade our vehicles to better adapt to new enemies or atmospheric conditions, and even make temporary safe havens for any human survivors still out there.
But that's something Bungie will never do because outside of Outbreak Perfected and Exotic Ornaments, they have the biggest hate-boner for EVERYTHING related to Rise of Iron.
1
u/Joshy41233 23h ago
Anyone who wants siva back are just proving they did not pay attention during Rise of Iron (the expansion they claim to love so much)
Lore wise siva is done, theres no way to make more without taking outbreak from us. The Whole point of Rise of Iron, especially the Iron tomb, was destroying the replication chamber and ending the threat of siva.
Also, Quicksilver exists, a far superior nanobot (and then theres the fact that we really dont need nanobots when we have 4 civilizations worth of technology and information)
And dont get me started on the whole Season of the Plague shit, a bunch of content creators circlejerking and acting like they had came up with the greatest idea in the world, if course this sub was throthing at the mouth, because they lap up anything the content creators say.

Okay tell that to Cayde and Elsie. Bungie went on record and said long before Beyond Light that the Exo Stranger's story was already and tied up with a bow. She came back. Cayde fucking DIED. They brought him back. We can REBUILD the replication complex, or build a new one with our own SIVA replicator, AKA Outbreak Perfected. There's also the cache of SIVA on the Exodus Black. There are ways it came be done
0
u/Joshy41233 20h ago
Exo Stranger's story was already and tied up with a bow. She came back.
Luke Smith, who had nothing to do with the Lore said that, and said the same about the darkness (when the very same Release had the darkness reawaken)
The difference is, continuing Elsie's story and having Cayde become our virgil inside the pale heart didnt retcon their story at all, bringing siva back would completely retcon it's story and RoI (but like I said, all you fake RoI fans dont care as long as it brings back a useless nanite)
Tell me 1 reason siva needs to come back at all, everything you suggested previously can be solved in completely other ways, without recycling the same story ad nauseum.

u/ironkev 19h ago
Clovis Bray is my reason. Look me in the eye and tell me that egomaniac wouldn't have had a backup site for one of the many technologies his corporation created that can help fulfill his god complex.
0
u/Joshy41233 19h ago
Clovis had very little to do with Siva, infact the siva project wasn't developed until after Elsie became an exo and around the same time Clovis became one too, he had very little knowledge of it as all of his attention was on europa, the vex and the exos, he wouldnt care about such a meaningless project when he already had his salvation via the exos. Site 6 was the only replication chamber built before the collapse
Also thats an excuse how it could come back, not a reason for it coming back

Off the top of my head an easy one is to revert all systems back to the way they were pre-EoF. Keep the portal, sure, but at least make it so all the activities in the portal are still accessible from different locations on the classic director. Everything else has been a complete and utter blunder that never should have left the cutting room floor.
