Fella had 6+yoe and was in a senior position and was being told by a fair few that it was their own fault that they weren't on the big bucks or that they needed to go on their own way to make them.

Someone was also in there saying 100k isn't big bucks at all which I found mad.

But yes, answer is FAANG or the likes.

For someone with 6 yoe? It is

For an experienced senior? It's the minimum

Really depends on the type of company there. Can't call it the minimum when a huge amount earn less than that, with salary surveys confirming such.

Oh no, someone had an opinion you disagreed with?

100k for 6 YOE is nothing out of the ordinary.

Just assume its FAANG

u/Dev__ Could you explain why you have been deleting people’s posts? You also deleted one earlier from a guy sharing a really nice app he had built for no good reason.

u/pedrorq 5d ago

Agreed. Mods should give a warning and explain what's going on

Or just stay hands off and let the users up/downvote as they deem appropriate. There should be very little moderation required on a subreddit like this.

Stop suggesting that reddit works the way reddit was intended to work. That's the kind of shit that'll get you banned.

We should all do our best to White Knight every issue we find, gatekeep every topic imaginable, and whine when people speak ill of the industry. This is the way of the sub. Get on board or be destroyed.

I haven't removed any posts, my understanding is you're referring to this post linked below. It's not been removed but locked.

https://old.reddit.com/r/DevelEire/comments/1n6dtl3/i_started_building_just_another_irish_tech_job/

Authors regularly delete their own posts for their own reasons and I don't see the other mods having deleted any posts.

Because power, the boards guys migrated when they were at risk at losing it if boards closed

u/OpinionatedDeveloper contractor 5d ago

I wasn’t gonna mention it but this guy temp banned me because I was advising some juniors on how to find jobs and I advocated for the use of recruiters over job boards.

Now that’s my opinion after a wealth of experience in this field but it’s totally fine if you disagree with me. But to ban me because you disagree is fucked up.

Guy whose post got locked here! Was a bit blindsided by that one tbh. Mod claimed my project hadn’t progressed enough since my last post and proceeded to lock it. I think he has since edited his comment but that was the sentiment. Agreed that we should let the community just downvote me if that’s the general consensus rather than one person being judge, jury and executioner

Yeah it was great to see your post and see all the changes you made off the back of our feedback! You’ve clearly been working hard on it.

We don’t see many personal projects on here so I was shocked to see it get removed. “Lack of progression” is not a reason to remove a post like that, especially given the progression since the first post has been huge!

1

u/Dev__ dev 5d ago

That wasn't the reason I gave. I supplied my thinking where I took the action.

>“Lack of progression”

You're quoting something that literally doesn't exist.

You're quoting something that literally doesn't exist.

Oh and I just had another look and yes, yes you did say that:

I think you're dressing up your language as a pivot in order to just simply post again. I think once is a year is frequent enough or maybe every six months if it's in constant development but even then the second post in a year would have to be justified. I'd even tolerate a quarterly post if you put effort in to showing the changes and development that went in to it since the previous post.

In the time it took to write that you could have put in an ounce of effort and actually looked at the massive changes OP made.

I'm taking that wording from the OP who said you since edited it. Anyway, the reason you gave in that thread was: "Self promotion is permitted and even encouraged. However the frequency of this posting of this job board is too high and just comes off to me as a little bit spammy so I'm locking this thread."

I take massive issue with this for the following reasons:

  1. This was only the second time this guy had posted about it and it had been a month since his prior post. This is objectively not "spammy". I absolutely agree that there perhaps needs to be some kind of limit but once a month is not it.
  2. It takes guts from him to do this but based on our strong feedback in the initial thread to focus on salary transparency, he completely changed the application to revolve around this idea.
  3. The guy has been nothing but respectful in his posts and in the comments even after receiving some harsh feedback from various commenters.
  4. We should be supporting our local devs and businesses, particularly smaller ones
  5. There is not enough content to justify removing posts like this. It's not like the place is filled with it. If that starts to happen, then revise the rules as needed.
  6. The post had a ton of upvotes but it seems like based on one objectively incorrect comment, you decided to remove it. That commented included: "it looks like you’ve just ignored all of this and posted again??" even though he very clearly took our feedback onboard and made massive changes.
  7. As I said in another comment, there is no need to heavily moderate this subreddit. It's not one that attracts many controversial or political posts and so the users themselves can up/downvote as they see fit.

u/OpinionatedDeveloper contractor 3d ago

u/Dev__ So instead of admitting you made the wrong decision, you're just going to downvote and ignore?

Vast majority of engineers make a reasonably good salary in tech, but nothing crazy. It's a very small minority who get to work in the biggest companies who get the big money, especially in the senior roles.

7

u/wasabiworm 5d ago

FAANG if you negotiate a good package.

4

u/data_woo 5d ago

company wise or job wise? former; FAANG, AI scaleups that hire globally, and large AI orgs like OpenAI and Anthropic. latter; software sales

5

u/Strong-Sector-7605 5d ago

I think the problem with these posts is that big money means different things to a lot of people in this sub.

6

u/National-Ad-1314 5d ago

Because some people paid off their house years ago so 50k is loads to them. The equivalent renter needs 80 to feel as happy.

But if we're just talking totals of money there are people earning 150k as an individual contributor.

-4

u/OpinionatedDeveloper contractor 5d ago

150k is very achievable, just become a contractor.

u/dataindrift 5d ago

Equity. You'll never be rich on a salary.

15

u/data_woo 5d ago

the notion that the average joe can’t get rich from just a salary is hustle porn shite. it’s also one outing themselves as being unaware of just how high salaries can get in tech, law, and finance.

1

u/dataindrift 4d ago

Doesn't matter what you make.

Even on 200k a year, it's how you make that money work.

Even on 200k, unless you invest you won't be rich.

If you think otherwise, you're a fool.

2

u/data_woo 4d ago

i agree that investing is the top priority with regards to building wealth, but your comment is insinuating you need equity in your work to become rich. which isn’t true.

i have a friend who makes upwards of half a mil a year and hasn’t a clue how to invest and has little interest in it right now. she’s pretty fucking rich.

All right I'm leaving this community guys if the moderator is doing his own stuff I don't want to be here

0

u/Dev__ dev 4d ago

You're always free to leave. I don't know of any Big Tech post nor did I remove one.

Sounds like the OP of that post removed his own post and you've simply assumed the mods removed it.

How do you know that?

Reports:

1: Education or career advice outside megathread

Action: Ignoring.

Seems like question thread for the mods rather than an Education thread.
