This sub is so chilled - bit like Durban. And not over moderated. So question for you guys...
Do you go on the main SA sub much?
I was on there for over 4 years, was given an automated tag of "Aristocracy and top 1% poster"
Then got a perm ban a few days ago for posting this (It was just a funny review by a German rollercoaster nerd)
"Does AFRICA have Roller Coasters!? YES, Africa does have roller coasters! From the legendary Tower of Terror at Gold Reef City in South Africa to Anaconda, Africa’s only full-circuit inverted coaster, we explore the continent’s most extreme and unique theme park rides"

Anyway, just wanted to rant a bit.
Reddit is weird sometimes.
But this sub is cool!
Thanks!

I was also banned from the sub because I commented on a post on a different sub. Apparently the 2 subs have beef or something

The mods for that other sub are completely power-hungry and insane. Most of us have been banned from there at one point or another. Mostly because they think they should be in charge of which subs you are allowed to join. They ban most people just for commenting on another sub that they don't like. And tell you you can come back if you grovel and apologise and be a good boy and only join subs that they tell you that you can join. I told them to fornicate elsewhere.
But be warned. They have taken down whole subs because people were complaining about them there. Most SA subs won't let you mention that sub in case they get taken down.

Geez. So if we comment about them here, they have the power to close down this Durban sub. That's North Korea stuff!

Guys, you have opened my eyes. I think that's why I got banned from the main SA page cos I joined Down South. I was really surprised to learn of my banning cos I consider myself quite a level-headed liberal and no real explanation was given, just an automated response. It's nuts that simply wanting to hear and debate both viewpoints from the left to the right is enough to have a person labeled and booted out. Anyway no regrets; it's just Reddit - but yoh some precious people out there need to get a life.

I find most of the other South African subs to be very Cape Town-centric 😬

Like others have said I too got banned for commenting on a post on the other sub.
Both are pretty bad for different reasons though. The subs for individual cities are actually a lot more useful.

Dude I was banned for an honest comment that was absolutely NOT unkind in any way, shape or form, it was educational, with proof and people thanked me for shedding light on something new.
They banned me for 28 days, but I have a big mouth so I told them that they only banned me because they had a personal issue with what I said, and then they banned me permanently.
To those SA Sub mods... 😙➡️🍑

Same. I got banned, and the reason they gave was like "hate speech" or something. Knowing I hadn't ever posted or done anything hateful, when I questioned for clarity on what exactly I had done, they said it was because I subbed to DownSouth, but that they'd lift the ban if I unsubbed and basically grovelled and begged. Needless to say, I'm still banned

The SA sub is an echo chamber.
One time I posted a story and the mods wanted evidence of me opening a case at a police station ☠️☠️☠️. I left after I challenged the mods and the type of content they allowed/rejected.

Banned from the sub for participating in another SA sub, literally got banned for joining a non-hateful, informative sub. Yes there are opinions and ideas some may not agree with, but they can't dominate all South African subs by picking and choosing who's part of the main sub.

I also got banned because I called the one despotic mod out on their agent provocateur bs.
Their modus operandi is to say something contentious, then bait people into responding angrily and then they'd ban the responder (and sometimes also delete their own comments to hide the evidence).
True power tripping.

I got banned there for going to another sub, which is nonsensical overreach. Mods are assholes gone mad with power.

I always thought Mods were encouraged to get the traffic and subscribers up for ad revenue. Anyway, getting banned for being on another sub, that is a new one. Never heard of that before, until today.

The argument was that the other sub was trying to infect the South Africa sub with its notions, and mainstream those notions.
I found those notions disagreeable but had no problem debating them. In fact, it was really fun happily tearing those idiotic arguments apart on the other sub.
But whatever the case, going to that other sub lead to me being banned from the South Africa sub.
It's absurd. I'm happy abiding by the rules of the South Africa when I'm in it.
Being told what subs I can go to outside of the South Africa sub is, like I said, nonsensical overreach
1
u/Make_the_music_stop Jul 24 '25
Yes, nonsensical and just sad.
We need free debate and free speech.
1
u/derpferd Jul 24 '25
To be fair, we do have free speech. Banning me from the South Africa sub is not a curtailment of my free speech.
I'm still free to say what I want on other subs (within the rules of those subs of course) and if I want, I can go elsewhere on the internet or even outside and stand on a box say what I want (within the bounds of law and public courtesy)
I still have my free speech.
But banning me for something I did OUTSIDE of the sub is absurd overreach

I was banned from the main SA sub because I joined r/DownSouth. Never actually posted anything to DownSouth, but it seems that just joining that sub made me persona non grata. It did made me chuckle because I thought, here we are years after Apartheid, and some Reddit mod is telling me what I can and can't read. Apparently I could have argued my case, but I assumed if they were that thin skinned, the chances of having my ban overturned was minimal.

u/Make_the_music_stop Jul 24 '25
Shocked how many comments on this post are all saying the same thing. In the history of the world "censorship" has never been a done by the "good guys"

u/BookCougar Jul 24 '25
Same - I was Landed Gentry and then got banned for posting a question about nuclear war because I had included a debate I had with AI 💁🏻♀️

I got a double whammy, first got banned for being on DownSouth, did a bit of a grovel and got unbanned, then a month or 2 ago got banned for being on the Asmongold subreddit. Second time they weren't nice enough to humour the bad joke I made.
But before that I got into an argument with one of the mods, who around the time of the USA tarrifs thing put together a list of companies to boycot. Someone made the standard "you typed this on your Iphone right?".
Mod said nuh uh they actually swapped from apple to this other phone, and posted a link to their current phone. A phone, designed and built in California. California USA, where Apple is anyways headquartered. Said phone also cost 15 grand + shipping and taxes.
Pointed this out to the mod who then went a bit ballistic on me. I'm also pretty sure this is the mod who banned me, since the typing style was very similar.

The new Tower of Terror sucks. The old one that slowly cranked you up the tower and they could manually stop you at the top and keep you almost upside down 'til they pressed the release button made it so much scarier and thrilling because they made you sit at the top for however long they felt like. Now it just goes up smoothly like a lift and immediately drops without any intervention from the operator other than pressing the go button. Plus as said in the video not as much g-force.
Anyway, getting banned from that sub seems to be a badge of honour.

Nah, that's not a real SA Sub. Something stinks about it.. quite well known how pathetic and ridiculous it's modded.

Not since I was banned on that one, can't remember why. Like a year or 2 ago. Don't waste your braincells on those people banning everyone lol
