Durban groomers(pets) I need your counsel.

So I'm a developer, my friend and I decided to work on random projects as practice and to try to see if we do anything meaningful at the same time. So I decided to try to see if we can try to create a digital infracture for groomers, coz my mom's one of them,I would've to go to her salon and she how the work is done and see if we can help on tech side someway. But i don't want to call her, just in case I can actually do something useful I want it to be a surprise. My first idea was a booking platform, like what Google already does but adding prices, services, and all categories like for dogs,cats,etc...

I thought an app that can send notifications could be useful, but that's above my paygrade, also takes too much time. I just realized now that I don't know really how's the workflow despite having visited once in a while,so I wanted to know if there's any groomer who can tell me if they would like anything on the tech side to be created that would be helpful to them coz chances are the others might have the same issue.

Any advice to get into the Nutrition Industry?

Hi, I'm finishing my Specialized Nutrition studies, already have my Personal Training Certification, Is there any form of Nutrition Companies that is hiring or better yet, remote work spots?

I've worked at Gym Company, Fit24 & Recently, Virgin Active but trying to avoid VA especially due to their absurd rental costs for Professionals. The PT fee is R8000 pm.

So currently been going private for the past 5-6 months but trying to get a steady income.

I'd appreciate advice, Currently hold the following qualifications

Personal Training- Physical IQ

Professional Diploma In Diet & Nutrition(Distinction)- Alpha Academy

Fitness Instructor- Academy of Health & Fitness UK

Specialized Nutrition- Trifocus Fitness Academy

I'm interested in getting either into the Coaching, Nutrition, Personal Training or Sports Nutrition/Supplements industry, Also open to internship as a Fitness Manager

I'd appreciate some pointers in the right direction, Being a Private PT is rough

The Best Burger in Durban

I'm looking for the best burger in Durban. It has to exist. Smashed burgers, thick burgers, burgers dripping with sauce - give me your best recommendations please.

EDIT: Loads of recommendations, some the same, some I've never heard of. Time to do a comprehensive review of all of these spots. ✌🏻

Alternative, radical and cultural places in Durban

Hey people, I'll be visiting Durban in a few days and I was wondering what are the most interesting places to visit that have a more alternative and/or radical vibe. Maybe cultural centres, squats, or venues with nice music. Also accepting recommendations of good and popular restaurants as well :)

Are there any educational centres here for kids that dropped out of high school?

I have a cousin in law who stopped school at std 7 (grade 9). Specifically, she is interested in something creative such a graphic design or jewellery design.

Are there any institutes in durban (or online if it's not local) that are providing creative courses for non matriculants to study?

Public transport and nightlife

I am in Durban for the weekend and wanted to know in Umhlanga what do you guys use for public transport, is it uber or the local cabs. Also what relaxed pubs are there for a night out as a couple?

I would like to go out and have a few drinks without worrying about driving back.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the awesome suggestions 😊

Hi fellow durbanites!

Does anyone know how safe the greyville racecourse is for walking during the day? I wanted to go for an afternoon walk with my baby in a stroller , but not sure how safe it will be for us.

How different is Durban compared to CPT?

Hey everyone! I’m from Cape Town and looking forward to spending some time in Durban soon. I’ve heard it’s quite different from Cape Town, but I’m not sure exactly how. What’s the vibe like there, and is it true that it’s a bit more conservative? Would love to hear what it’s like from locals or anyone who’s visited!

How safe is commuting via bicycle?

I'm finding myself having to travel further and further distances, and while I enjoy walking and don't find it difficult, it's not always an option. So I'm left having to rely on Uber and bolt. I've been looking into getting a bicycle after not cycling properly in about 8 years.

I'm not concerned about the physical effort required, I'm more concerned about safety. Obviously you have to just be careful in general, and more careful in certain areas, but how much risk is involved in commuting via bicycle now? Maybe distances of between 5-20km. I'd appreciate if you have actual first-hand experience doing so.

Edit: let this comment but adding here for clarity: I'd probably never cycle to town, and would mainly be between Musgrave, Morningside and Windermere. Durban North and Berea occasionally and possibly further; Westville and Umhlanga.

Picture Uber eats terrible customer service

Am i the only one thats fallen on the wrong side of the customer service sword of Uber eats whenever I get an issue they blatantly push my complaints to the side and give me some computer automated reply and kick me to the curb ?

So i ordered this and somehow it ended up costing me R235 instead of R136 , so I told the driver that the order is short but he couldn't do anything really . So I reported on the app and low and behold they told me there is nothing they could do i should habe seen on the stores banner for if there were any promotions before i bought the pizza.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

What's your go-to meal here when times are rough?

Fellas, times are rough for your boy,i just came to durban 5 months ago, life's been sweet and chill, but now I found myself not having butter in the fridge or even any tea,Cremona and whatnot. Worse part is that on a normal good month I can afford everything I need to eat like a regular human being, but this month was one of those where you just wanna forget. When i came back home yesterday and I opened my fridge, it felt like a desert. Can you imagine I only had 2 loaf of bread and a jug of water. Like I got Russians in the freezer side but that's my dinner. For breakfast nowadays i'm having bread with water, and it's only the middle of the month. I hear ppl online saying their broke meal is Ramen, like how? I've never had them but surely it's pricey right? Anyways, what do you guys in Durban have when the pockets are empty?

High Fantasy Book Club

Hi!

I want to start a book club in Durban for people particularly interested in fantasy novels. I'd really like to meet people with similar interests and I think a book club is a cool and chill way to do that.

Too many book clubs are focused around self-improvement and deep novels with significant life meaning. I just want to talk about goblins and sword fighting (which can also be meaningful).

So, as they say, build it and they will come - so this is me reaching out to see who'd be interested.

Thanks!

Thrift shops

Hello all

Any recommendations for thrift shops around Umhlanga, Cornubia, La Lucia side where I may be able to pop by during lunch to browse? I see Yaga is also quite popular and found some guy operating in town by the SAPS office. Yesterday's Gem/thethrift2023 I believe? Has some nice stuff but if anyone has experience buying from them please let me know because I would like to go and see their store in person but not 100% certain. Thanks

uShaka in Winter

First trip to Durban coming up. I have always wanted to visit uShaka but am weary of possible rain. Is wet and wild closed when it rains? Also what kind of real feel temps are expected around this time? (Visiting weekend of 22nd-25)

Also with regard to safety, I’m staying in an Airbnb opposite the beach which is about 7 minutes walk from uShaka. Is it safe to walk this area after dark?

Also any other recommendations for first time visitors would be great.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I can’t seem to find any recent results on the sub.

Thanks!

KZN Government

Howzit guys, hope everyone is well. Just wanted to have a little convo about our province and how it’s feeling and where it’s going. It’s already August of 2025, any improvements of infrastructure or service within your areas? Also interested in seeing your opinions on MK, do you think they’ll be voted to run our province and if so, how are they going to do? I got my opinions on Zuma, not the best, but in my head, it can’t be worse than what we have now lmao. Water has been such a pain from I can remember starting from 2022, like till this day, most nights our water goes off, like literally everyday lol. uMhlanga looking good with all the developments going on (I see people hate that, why is that so?) PINK Areas (Phoenix, Inanda, Kwamashu, Ntuzuma) haven’t seen much service delivery and improvement in infrastructure. (I’m currently studying IT, would love to develop something one day to help the PINK Areas).

Advice forn escaping the house for the day with hlf a.tank.amd R50

Hey Redditors of Durban.

I have a 9 year old and i wamma keep her out the hoiuse all day. Long story short my houselhold has been toxic over the past few days. Nothing physical, just issues involving mental and emotioional abuse. i can't let my child be around this.

I have half a tank of petrol and R50 bucks and i can pack sandwiches for us, What can i do to stay out the house (like 12 hours) until bed time, that costs close to nothing? I play with her actively, she's not a device kid. We sat around a fire in the yard til bed time as a distraction last night. I'm happy to go to 2 or 3 different places? Wei ust need to get away right now. Maybe new commmunitty uplifted parks in wealthier suburbs? I don't know if Mitchell park is opem. I don't have familtyy to visit as i live with them. Thanks im advanve

Side note : Ballito, Umhlnga and Midlands are too far out.
