General Just got my first scooter

Post image

After browsing the sub for a week or so, making a post to ask for advice and reviewing the options given to me, Ive opted for the Segway Max G2. I just opened it, set it up and gave it the first test rides. As of now, I am very happy with my purchase. I spent $883 for the scooter (Best buy had it for $799 for Labor Day Sale instead of $1399), and a Hover 1 Helmet with a detachable visor (was on sale for only $10) so overall I feel like it is a good deal to pay $880 for a scooter that would otherwise be double in price. The suspension feels really good, the app is very intuitive and its honestly a blast. Thank you to everyone who took the time to write back on my post. Ill update in a few months and tell you all if I am still as satisfied with my purchase.

I get flamed by knockoff clone riders all the time for saying this, but the “three Ns” are the by far the best entry-level scooter brands on the market: Ninebot, NIU and Navee.

I got a lot of those comments too. I understand once you’re deep into the hobby but its like saying, I should not buy a camry as a first car because with that money I can buy a tuned and built car from the 2000s. Maybe so, but I am looking for stability, reliability and just a comfortable ride that will not give me any issues as a new driver if that makes sense.

Exactly. I took my drivers license test in a relatively new Toyota Corolla and after that my old man let me use our BMW X3 SUV after I passed the test. The difference in handling and quality is miles better but the price is like double. So you do get what you pay for in every product out there in the market.

FYI, Ninenot is owned by Segway and Xiaomi owns 70% of Segway, and guess what, Navee is also mostly owned by Xiaomi.

It's basically all Xiaomi sub brands other than NIU

Xiaomi isn’t a knockoff tho lmao it’s one of the best pioneer brands out there

i think you misunderstood my comment

I understand very well. Xiaomi is a fantastic company. As long as what you buy is actually from them or their sub brands and not a knock off

that used to be the case but there are a ton now.

I forgot to ask. If you guys have any tips to maybe enjoy my rides more, or accessories that are a must buy, please make sure to tell me. I made sure to update the firmware and go through the settings like regenerative breaking, lock code, and things like that but Im always open to new suggestions or just advice in general. Thank you once again.

Pump. XiaoMi electric pump is the best. If you will regularly go over 15mph, get a full face helmet. Get gloves either way and a decent summer jacket. All The Gear, All The Time. Dress for the slide, not the ride.

I have a pump at the house or could always take it to my local gas station in my car. Im only using it on my school campus. Is a pump a must have on you at all times type of item? I bought a helmet which I thought was nice, ill link below for reference. Can you elaborate further on what a summer jacket is??

2

u/toomanyscooters 1d ago

You don't need to carry the pump, just use it regularly and make sure it has a gauge.

A summer jacket is a synthetic armoured motorbike jacket, lightweight non-leather.

Jacket

Have fun and enjoy it to it's fullest.

Be sure to get a full-face helmet at least, that Hover 1 will not protect your face when you fall. It is not a queston of speed or "if", but of "when"...

4

u/miketayse 1d ago

You'll like it! Have fun and wear a helmet.

FYI that $1399 is fake 😅 scooter companies always do massive "discounts" all year long so it's basically regular price at this point

5

u/Pure-Tough8723 2d ago

Is there something better you think I couldve gone with at that same price that is UL certified?

-4

u/boykissergoober 2d ago

why do you even need to spend 900 on that piece of slow garbage? with 300 you could have gotten a xiaomi scooter thats bassicly the same or with the 900 a fuckin kukirin g2 master

2

u/toomanyscooters 1d ago

Yeah, Kukirin's rep ain't so crash hot recently. Segway is solid gear. XiaoMi is also good but nothing for $300 is 'basically the same' as that particular Segway.

-5

u/boykissergoober 1d ago

i bought a navee gt3 for 380 and NEW and its just WAY better then that segway crap

5

u/toomanyscooters 1d ago

I appreciate your opinion. Come back and tell us about it when you have 5k miles on the clock.

2

u/KILLA_UNIQUE Segway GT1, Ninebot ES4 1d ago

Agree with you, my GT1 Segway has done 5,000 miles in heavy PNW rain and in heat, no problems at all, o creaking or stem wobbles, only needed to swap tires and brake pads 👌

3

u/KILLA_UNIQUE Segway GT1, Ninebot ES4 1d ago

no boykisser, that would’ve been a mistake since xiaomi and kukirin are cheap trash, only a scooter from Segway will last 6+years without falling apart , my GT1 has done 5,000 miles without a single issue and my G30 Max has been going solid for 6 years now.

Congratulations! Got my Max G2 couple months ago. These items are must imo: Helmet (mountain bike or full face motorcycle, armored jacket, knee pads, riding gloves. I had my first fall wearing only a bicycle helmet and got major road rash. After recovering I ordered all the personal protective gear I could get my hands on.

Most riders don’t gear up this much but I think it’s worth it!

3

u/Pure-Tough8723 2d ago

Would you mind posting links so I can see what kind of gear youre rocking? I appreciate the suggestions. Also how fast were you going when you fell, and what caused your fall?

2

u/imjoeycusack 1d ago

I’ll try to get the links later but here’s my gear:

Helmet: Shoei RF-SR Jacket: Alpinestars T-GP Plus R V4 Airflow Jacket Kneepads: Alpinestars Bionic Plus Knee Protectors Gloves: Alpinestars SMX-1 Air v2 Gloves

I was going about 15-17mph when I fell. Took my hand off the left handlebar to wave at my neighbor (stupid i know lol) and the wheel immediately turned and I lost control. Hit 95 degree asphalt and rolled 3-4 times (luckily had my work backpack on which stopped the rolling from being worse. Only protection I had on was a bike helmet. Sustained 2nd degree road rash on left forearm, left knee, and both palms. First week of recovery was pure hell but I felt ok by the 2 week mark.

Everyone’s mileage may vary with protective gear but as someone in my late 30’s I can’t afford to get seriously hurt like that and miss work, being on bedrest for several days etc. Like any other activity, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Dude ur not going to need all that gear on this scooter….. this guy is obviously a shop owner who sells gear.

This was my first e scooter too and after buying a 40 mph scooter, this one feels more like a child’s toy

1

u/Pure-Tough8723 1d ago

What did you spend on that 40 mph scooter?

1

u/Short_Park_8297 1d ago

1600

1

u/Pure-Tough8723 1d ago

I could see how going faster could be a lot more fun but I was really shooting for $500-$600 so the almost $900 I spent were even too much. This is not a commuter for me, Ill only use it to get around my University campus so I cannot justify the $1400. Im glad you enjoy your purchase though :)

0

u/imjoeycusack 1d ago

I wish I were that successful lmao. Depending on use case, more gear the merrier. I commute on busy roads and had a serious fall right near my house,

2

u/RedViper1985 1d ago

I was about to say too much but I have the same scooter and the only thing I don't have for it is the armored jacket.

1

u/imjoeycusack 1d ago

Get one if you can. Totally worth the peace of mind. You never know what kind of fall/accident is around the corner.

2

u/GerkinRichard 10h ago

Resume the surgery return my shoulder after I went down from an unexpected pothole.

Thank God I was at least wearing a helmet, the giant dent in it turned what likely would’ve been missing half the skin from my face and a skull fracture if not brain bleed into a mild concussion.

1

u/imjoeycusack 7h ago

Omg scary! Glad you’re okay.

3

u/limited_empathy 2d ago

Thank you (:

u/succulent_flakepiece 1d ago

congrats and welcome! these things are super fun and can turn into a very expensive hobby real fast lolol. i purchased my first scooter (Niu KQi3 pro) this spring. after about 30 hours of riding the last few days, i realized i wasn't something a bit more robust and thrilling... so i purchased a Ausom DT2 pro. rip my wallet lol. enjoy your rides and be safe!

2

u/Pure-Tough8723 1d ago

Thank you, I plan on sticking with this one for a little while. Maybe in the future Ill upgrade.

Get ready for when the back tyre goes flat👌

2

u/Pure-Tough8723 2d ago

Why would it go flat?

4

u/toomanyscooters 1d ago

People don't check their pressure regularly and get flat tyres. Get a good pump (XiaoMi 1s is my fave, the 2 has pressure sensor failures more often than I'd like) and check your pressure once a week. This is the most important basic maintenance you can do.

-10

u/Grouchy_Wolverine_59 1d ago

Back tire tends to go flat. Invest in solid tire replacement. The suspension doesn’t change that much.

2

u/Pure-Tough8723 1d ago

Why does it go flat? Could you recommend me some solid tire replacements?

5

u/kneel23 E-Twow GT Sport | m365 | NanRobot D5+ 1d ago

they do not "tend to go flat" you will be fine, just get a little $20 battery powered air pump. Not sure what that person is talking about

1

u/Pure-Tough8723 1d ago

oh no i meant for at home

1

Great. Thanks.

2

u/Dumpst3r_Dom 1d ago

Check tire pressure once a week or so. The extremely small volume of air means even large temperature swings can cause several psi change in pressure.

Also fill to like 5 psi under what "max" rating is on side wall. Usually its 50 psi but I find 45 to be more than plenty to prevent rim strikes but stay safely away from over pressure.

3

u/b3terbread 1d ago

Invest in a solid electric air pump and it wont go flat any time soon.

I think so yeah, I attribute having only had one flat on my scooters in 6000km ridden to checking and topping up the tyre pressure weekly.

What I did was buy a cheap battery powered pump from aliexpress, I can try and find the listing if you're interested.

1

u/Pure-Tough8723 1d ago

Sure, Id appreciate that.

3

u/hayixx 1d ago

Just make sure you pump the tire every two weeks or so, and check visually before your rides if the tire is noticably deflated and you should be good. There is no scooter tire that "is more prone to flats" except if the manufacturer uses very bad quality tires and tubes. Your is tubeless so should be fine as long as keep at a good pressure and do ride on a naile
