Discussion I just finished reading Eragon and then watched the movie 🥴
OMG it was horrible! They skipped the entire book and butchered the story mercilessly with horrible acting to boot. I think the only thing the got right was Brom's explanation of how magic worked, and that was even a stretch as it showed Eragon later using words of the ancient language he barely knew / had just learned. Like, WHAT?
Anyway I'msure this is old news to most. I read that Disney+ is making a TV series. Hopefully it stays true to the book series. I just started reading Eldest so the adventure continues in my world. 📚

You'll be pleased to know that Christopher Paolini will be directly involved in the making of the new TV series. I for one can't wait for it to come out.

I still hope Disney doesn’t restrict him to much…

Based on his tweets they’ve given Chris plenty of freedom just like they did with Percy Jackson

u/gregedit Eldest 6d ago
Wait, is there a Percy Jackson series? And is it good?

Reviews are mixed on it, currently there’s just one season but second one is in the works. I didn’t watch the whole thing, I sort of liked what I saw but it just feels off, I couldn’t get into it. I actually enjoyed the movies more despite them not being very loyal to the books, as they felt more entertaining

I haven’t seen it yet but from what I understand Rick was heavily involved in the script writing so regardless of what reviews are, it’s what he wanted which is good news for the eragon series

Brom and durza were fantastic, everything else was a nightmare

u/mhfinearts 6d ago
I did like the actor who played Durza, I agree

Robert Carlyle. He was also great in The World Is Not Enough. Also played Hitler. Dude is a great villain.

And he's absolutely incredible as Rumplestiltskin in Once Upon A Time.

THATS where I recognized him from!! Such a good show, and he played a great Rumple too

I vividly remember his face and can't picture him as anyone else. Same for Brom.

I saw the movie before I read the books (movie came out when I was 6, started books when I was 11), and I cant picture anyone else as Brom. He IS Brom to me.

When did you give up - when Saphira gets blown up like a balloon in mere seconds? Or when the Razak get killed of like some minor side plot? Or did you make it to the shadow dragon? 🤪
10
u/mhfinearts 6d ago
Omg, that made me so mad when she was like, "I am Saphira." Like, no, you do not know your name, yet that's not how it happened 🥴
1
u/Liraeyn 6d ago
Ok but Eragon asks her "Are you Saphira", not "Would you like to be called Saphira".
7
u/mhfinearts 6d ago
Potato, patado. She still chose her name out of a bunch of suggestions Eragon made to her, she didnt just announce that was her name

I liked it when I was a child and didn’t even know it was based on a book but now that I’ve read and love the books I’d probably despise it

I enjoy the movie for what it is ngl, I find I have to do that with most adaptations of comics/books I like. Maybe it’s just cause I watched it a lot when I was little before reading the books and have nostalgia but I actually kinda love it lol.
Jeremy Irons as Bron was a PERFECT casting choice and he’s the only way I can picture him now. I adored the voice for Saphira and really liked the design they gave her. They messed up a lot but for the era and budget I’m not that mad. Is it a good movie or accurate in any way? Hell no. But it is what it is and all I can do is keep my fingers crossed that the show is a MUCH more accurate adaptation.

u/mhfinearts 6d ago
Jeremy Irons didn't make a bad Brom, I agree with you there. I was deeply annoyed with the depiction of Saphira though. The book clearly described her wings as having thin membranes, like a bat would, or any traditional version of a dragon - not feathers. She looked like a giant blue chicken with an absurdly long neck and oversized feather wings.

u/Squididlio 5d ago
I really don’t think it looks bad. A giant blue chicken with a long neck is taking the piss a lil lol, she undeniably looks like a dragon. It is however definitely not lore accurate and I can’t wait to see her with her real bat-like wings in the new show. There are always going to be some changes to the story when doing adaptations and imo the wings were not the most grievous sin of the movie. She’s still a beautiful and powerful dragon despite the inaccuracies, sometimes you have to just take media for what it is and find enjoyment.

I'm still trying to understand how a sapphire ended up in Zar'roc's pommel. The easiest detail ever, but even that they couldn't get right.

My dad, sister, and I all went to see it in theaters when it came out. Dad and I had read the book, sister hadn't. After the movie, dad and I were complaining about how bad it was and my sister was surprised because she enjoyed it. They changed so much they literally could not continue making the movies based on the books

u/DylanNoack 6d ago
There's no movie, none at all 🙈
On a real note, the directors/extended cut actually has a few extra scenes that are closer to the book (for example, Katrina is never in the original, but extra scenes include her and show why Roran wanted to leave town (albeit different than the book, Katrina runs away with him)

I hated how the the movie made arya instantly in love with eragon like what book did they read if they did. The dwarfs not being there and the urgals just being hill billy's instead of giant beasts the razak where a joke. Roran wasnt set up for his part in the future this movie had nothing to continue on in the future. The only thing i tought was right was jeremy irons as bron to bad the writing for him was bad cause i felt he fit the part

u/Reaperscythe6 4d ago
Don't forget completely omitting Jeod. Also the way they ended to movie with Arya leaving..like wtf how does any of it make sense
1
u/Aggressive_Sun_9890 2d ago
I also just tought of no twins and absolutly none of the mind probing they tried on him but also eragon on arya the whole thing should have been set up for so many moments later. I wonder what the plan was with the movie cause they left out so much core stuff it is impossible to continue. I realy hope the disney show is gonna be more fatefull cause this really is one of my favorite book series.

u/Reaperscythe6 2d ago
I agree completely. I don't think they were intending to make a sequel. I have been reading and rereading the works of the GreatP since I was like 12 lol. Alagasia is my happy place lol

Well, welcome to the club. That abomination of a movie butchered several things (Eragon's training, Angela, the Urgals, etc).

I tried to watch the movie after rereading the books again and I had to shut it off within 30 minutes I got to where Eragon gets back to the family farm

I still cant unhear how badly he pronounced some of the spells. Like Waise Hael, sounded like "Plaeze Heel", like he was begging the magic to work.
Though I always thought it was more of an "eye" for Waise, and 's' was more of a 'c' sound
So it sounded more like "wh-ace" if you say it fast.

The book is too long and detailed for a movie.
5
u/mhfinearts 6d ago
So was Harry Potter, and those movies did a pretty good job of getting the gist without utterly destroying the plot...

Did you notice that dwarves don’t exist? They made it impossible to make more movies afterwards
