General Discussion What's a fob opinion you have that would result in this?
94
u/Diligent-Lab375 Jul 02 '25
TTTYG is criminally underrated (I'm not on this subreddit too much, so please inform my if the contrary is true). I know some lyrics haven't aged particularly well, but it's, in my opinion, there catchiest album

As a black fan, I’ve always noticed how weird and microagressive this fanbase gets when discussing the band’s hip hop collabs…
40
u/witchycommunism Folie à Deux Jul 02 '25
You're right. I mean they were (are?) on Jay Z's label and I feel like that black influences have always been part of their music.
13
u/razzlefrazzle0 Jul 03 '25
It also makes no sense (the hate not the collabs) because Pete Wentz is literally mixed? Like, his mom is black and Jamaican. Ik the punk and rock scenes can be violently discriminatory which is a whole other problem but it feels somehow even stupider coming from a FOB fan.

YES. Sunshine Riptide, Tiffany Blews, The Mighty Fall, Dear Future Self… the way people consistently rank those as their least favorite songs is very odd.

u/BigHeadDeadass Infinity On High Jul 03 '25
To be fair it took me years to realize Lil Wayne was on Tiffany Blews and im 90% sure he didn't write his part. I would've loved to hear an actual verse from him that he wrote for the song

Tiffany Blews, Dear Future Self, and Sunshine Riptide all get lots of hate and it’s very odd that they all happen to feature black artists. As a non black poc fan that never sat right with me.
34
u/asquared98 Sunshine Riptide Apologist Jul 03 '25
The Sunshine Riptide hate especially got to me.
As a Nigerian, I was ecstatic to learn Burna Boy was featured on Mania, the only feature at that. Several Nigerian news outlets even proudly reported on it. Afrobeats wasn't nearly as popular in the West as it is today and to see my culture represented in the music of my favorite band was huge to me.
So to see people completely shit on Burna's verse, make fun of him for speaking "gibberish" (as if a running joke for the past 20+ years hasn't been how Patrick's singing style makes some lyrics damn near impossible to understand), say he ruined the song, and even create and share edits of the song completely omitting him was disheartening to say the least.
A Rock/Afrobeats collab is almost unheard of. FOB's love for genre-bending is hella innovative and what sets them apart from other Rock/Emo bands. You'd think that innovation would be something celebrated, rather than bashed by fans who wish FOB would just release TTTYG and FUCT over and over again for the rest of eternity.

u/chadwifechadlife So Much (For) Stardust Jul 03 '25
This is so interesting to learn. Sunshine Riptide was my immediate favorite and it was so heartbreaking to see what people said. The thinly veiled racist undertones of its criticism are so nasty and reek of ignorance. I LOVE Burna Boy’s verse cuz it’s a kind of music/ lyricism I rarely hear and it’s very refreshing and new (for me.) FOB’s blending of genres is what makes them, them. It’s not just whiny white boys (although ofc I love that genre too.) They add something different you can’t get from any other band. I was dumbfounded to discover how many people felt negatively of his feature.

Sunshine Riptide is my absolute favorite off of MANIA, and I’m glad to know more about Burna Boy! His verse made the song literal perfection in my eyes, and I’m so ashamed that so there are so many hateful people in our community! I (a non POC fan) always love to see FOB’s collabs with POC and love to see Patrick pop up in random songs that I love from POC artists (Gym Class Heros esp, so glad they’re back)

I agree on that, including hate for Big Sean in The Might Fall. I loved his part in that. I only don't care for Lil Wayne's part in Tiffany Blews simply because it was clear Pete wrote the lyrics for him. I wish they gave Wayne a real verse he wrote himself. Lil Wayne was white hot at the time and it really would've made the bridge soar if he were allowed to write his own verse

MANIA had a lot of good ideas that were fumbled and the best song on it is Bishop's Knife Trick
A lot of Patrick's post-haitus singing focusing on his higher register felt forced, strained and a little grating at times and SMFS was, in general, a great return to form

I absolutely loved Mania :(. Maybe because I was a newer fan - I got into FOB around the same time AB/AP came out when I was like 13, so Mania was the first album/era of theirs that I experienced from the very beginning. I remember watching the Y&M music video the second it came out and I thought it was so good 😭.
Don’t get me wrong I love all their older stuff just as much if not slightly more, Folie is my favourite album of theirs (and probs of all time), but I guess I didn’t have that connection with it that older fans do and the change in their sound was much less stark to me since I was introduced to them through the likes of AB/AP anyway. But it does make me sad to see how many people hate it; it’s a fun album and reminds me of summer 🥹.
Justice for Bishops Knife Trick, Stay Frosty, Wilson, Y&M, Heaven’s Gate and Sunshine Riptide!!! I’ll admit I’m a Champions hater though x
2
u/MaydayGreen Jul 03 '25
i agree heavily with this. i’m a big RYMhead so i re-listened to Mania to have the FOB page complete and it’s a lot better than i remember from when it came out. it is probably their weakest for me but it’s still not bad. Stay Frosty, Wilson, and The Last of the Real Ones are bangers.

Young and Menace is a really good song if they had just executed the chorus differently
The idea of it going from a soft slow song to a high energy chaotic chorus is really interesting and I love how the verses sound, but I just feel like if they did less of the edm sound in the chorus and did more of a rock sound (but still making it chaotic and somewhat distorted) as well as add a bit more lyrics in the chorus, this song would’ve been so so good

My opinion is that the "contrarian" opinion (that post-hiatus/MANIA is good actually) has come full circle to being the dominant opinion, at least on this subreddit.
I've noticed this too. If anything i think it's a positive testament that FOB has been able to maintain relevence in the mainstream after shedding the pop-punk sound, to the point where they now have two "halves" of their discography. And we are legitimately weighing which half is the better music.
I really can't think of any other rock band or at least pop punk band that has been as successful reinventing themselves and staying popular. Maybe Paramore?

AB/AP is a bad album. It's not horrible, but definitely bad imo. The production is terrible (no hate to Jake Sinclair, love the white album), and the songwriting is bland. Yes, some songs are pretty good (Uma Thurman, Irresistible, Twin Skeletons), but most songs are either very boring or outright annoying (Centuries, The Kids Aren't Alright). Recently, a lot of people have claiming that this album is "underrated" but i think most people just like liking bad albums cuz it's different

I don’t really care for This Ain’t a Scene. Is probably bottom 3-4 on IoH for me (my favorite album). I think it’s only popular because it’s easier to sing along with compared to other songs from the album + had the marketability.

Infinity on High, Folie, and Srar are 3 albums in a row that all were somewhat different and more experimental than the last, and each one is looked at pretty positively from the fanbase. Y&m is a different case where that ear-grating chorus is a LOT to handle for some people, and even if you enjoy it, it’s not hard to understand why it may not be for some people.
Even if I can’t stand the song, it sure as hell ain’t for the reason that they tried to make something different out of it. I appreciate that aspect about them, but that song is definitely a demanding listen.

Mania is trash. I haven’t even listened to the entire thing. I’ve been a diehard fob fan since 2005 and always said they could release anything and I’d like it. Until mania. I physically cannot listen to it.

Worse than Young And Menace is a bit far. Young And Menace is literally one of the worst songs I’ve ever listened too

just because techno -hiphop- dubstep isnt your thing doesn’t mean it’s not someone’s. it goes very hard on a subwoofer, my boyfriend loves it in his truck.

IOH is good, but it's probably sitting at sixth on my personal ranking when most people have it as their favorite

Church and Favorite Record are my two least favorite songs by FOB and I don't understand why people like them so much.

Idk if it’s an unpopular opinion but I wish evening out with your girlfriend received more love! I really love how raw it sounds but then again I understand that it might not be everyone’s thing

young and menace is fun and i enjoy it! i totally don't blame fob fans for disliking it cause it's totally out of left field but (aside from being a bit repetitive, which a few fob songs suffer from) i think it's good. i especially love this jimmy fallon performance and how they adapted it to be played live

Wish they have removed all Mania and AB/AP from their tour (at least leave Centuries in the encore) and leave more songs from SR&R, or even TTO,TBO which I don't understand why they left it out (at least the 2 shows I went to they didn't play it).

They absolutely need to fire whoever is designing their merch these days. It’s all so fucking ugly. I went to When We Were Young last year and didn’t buy any of their merch because I couldn’t justify the cost. I knew I wouldn’t wear any of it. Even their stuff on their website is hideous.
