Question Trouble with my reflection on shortfilm

Hi! I’m making my first short film and I have this elevator shot I want to use. The problem is that at the end of it, you can see my reflection. I have almost no experience in VFX, so what would you suggest as the easiest fix? Thanks for any ideas or help!

Drop me a DM, happy to have a look at doing some VFX to fix this for free

Edit: Not sure what’s got up your arses but maybe consider helping out fellow creatives rather than being a dick to those who want to help. I’ve encountered a lot of people working in this field over the years and almost everybody wants to help each other out, so perhaps it’s just a Reddit problem. In the time you’ve been arguing about it, I’ve edited and sent the video to OP with the After Effects file so that they can see exactly what I did

Fuck no

u/topheee 2d ago

Huh? It’s like a 5 minute job. If they don’t have the experience to fix it then I’m more than happy to help…

Teach them

Don’t offer to take control of files and rights

Teach them

u/topheee 2d ago

What are you talking about? Where did I offer to take control of rights? I’ve been working in film for 15 years and want to help someone out with their first short film…

u/mr_warhamster 2d ago

I think your offer is very generous

u/smeggysoup84 2d ago

Yeah forget that dude. You're dope for helping him

43

u/PhilyJFry 2d ago

Dude just ignore that guy. You're awesome for offering to help and many of us not vfx inclined love people like you

15

u/Bozhark 2d ago

You did a solid this person sucks

14

u/conmeh 2d ago

You’re rad dude. Other person weird af

-175

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

You offered to help fix it

That requires file transfer of some sort

OP doesn’t know you at all

Instead describe process to fix; don’t offer to fix

Teach to fish

u/matbison 2d ago

this is such an obtuse take. let the man help for free. i doubt a camera operator knows and cares to learn Nuke to comp?

u/robertsjj 2d ago

Ever since i saw Shawshank redemption , i have a new respect for the term “obtuse”

Yeah this has convinced me that /u/TheSpottedBuffy has no film experience because nobody would gatekeep like that in our industry 😅

-5

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

I’m literally not gatekeeping

I’m asking for people to disclose process vs offering to do it for OP

15

u/iamsolate 2d ago

it takes a village, sometimes. if i were op, i would absolutely take him up on his offer and then study how he did it/ask him how he went about it. it’s a win win, you get to see the process and before and after, and you get your clip edited. i understand your take, but you’re going about it in a very odd way that comes off as unnecessarily aggressive

8

u/jessh164 2d ago

have you ever seen the credits of most films? one person doesn’t always have to wear every hat. it was a nice gesture, take a breather you don’t have to be so negative :)

5

u/BeastCoast 2d ago

“Disclose process”. Kid this is a boilerplate fix.

Very strange to see advising teaching a process vs do it for them is being an asshole

Correct

TEACH

Goodness

Apparently pointing out one should teach, not do, is crazy talk

2

u/Aethenosity 2d ago

Honestly, no. That is perfectly fine to do. It is how you did it, and the assumption that they are NOT teaching (which they are) that makes you objectively an asshole

9

u/BandaidsOfCalFit 2d ago

Your first message was “Fuck no” and you’re wondering why people think you’re coming across as an asshole…?

-8

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

You give up easily don’t you?

3

u/Professional_Bath887 2d ago

Is this a thing that happens to you often? You think you are trying to help, but the whole room tells you that you are a complete ass? Because if so, then you should probably find out what's going on with you. This is not normal, not healthy and, quite frankly, not okay.

2

u/councilorjones 2d ago

Film is a collaborative medium wtf are you even talking about

1

u/Gluverty 1d ago

You can allow this to be a teaching moment for yourself!

Maybe you have been made to work solo on all your projects and have to do all the different tasks/departments yourself. If so maybe reflect on why, could be anything from geography to insecurities.

Regardless filmmaking is very much a collaborative process where different people do different aspects. In many cases even multiple people in multiple departments. It's actually a bit foolish to try to learn everything yourself. There is certainly wisdom being taught by discovering jobs can be delegated.

And thus this can be a teaching moment for yourself!

1

u/TheSpottedBuffy 1d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

What exactly am I supposed to learn for this?

This sub is filled with snowflakes?

This sub wants others do to their work?

This sub only supports those who will do vs those who want to learn?

Please; what am I supposed to learn here?

All I learned is this sub is rife with bots and the humans are piling on and agreeing

1

u/Gluverty 1d ago

I already explained what you could learn. That on professional sets there are many people doing many different tasks and you limit yourself if you try to do it all yourself.

You are being a bit defensive by assuming everyone is a snowflake offended at you saying 'Fuck that'. People actually think collaboration and delegation is ok. I mean on a real project the director would pay another person to do that. So getting someone else to do it, even for free, isn't a negative.

Buy man eat fish, he day.

Teach fish man to a lifetime.

42

u/topheee 2d ago

Strange response but okay. OP: if you don’t trust me here’s how you can fix the problem

  1. Get a screen grab of the entire closed door
  2. Edit yourself out
  3. Make a mask of the door in After Effects
  4. Animate the mask size as the door closes

Honestly that’s probably taken me longer to type out than it would have done to actually edit, but I don’t want to be seen as some kind of scammer

20

u/Borge_Luis_Jorges 2d ago

Stop asking that u/TheSpottedBuffy for permission. Do whatever you and OP agree to.

24

u/topheee 2d ago

True, OP DM’d me already. Just don’t want them to be persuaded that everyone trying to help is a scammer

No, it is something psychological. Something is deeply wrong with you as a person, and you should seek treatment.

Dude, giving him this one shot isn't going to destroy his project. It's also pretty difficult to teach this guy via reddit chat. If that's the route he wants to go, there's youtube. Regardless, chill out.

25

u/Efflux 2d ago

He's going to make millions off this guy wheeling into an elevator but at a higher resolution. Mwuahahaha.

-13

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

I disagree

You’re not helping OP in the long run and OP is risking some shit giving you access

u/samtayl0rr 2d ago

You are on about absolutely nothing. Get out of here.

-3

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

You sure?

I’m not the one going back to reply on threads I’m not a part of

You replied to me else where, went back to find more of me and replied again

Do explain this new found glory, what did you call it? Thair-ahpy?

5

u/CalTCOD 2d ago

Ideally, I'm sure he can help them out & also teach them how to do so at the same time.

3

u/enemyradar 2d ago

The fishing of filmmaking is collaboration with people.

2

u/4perf_desqueeze 2d ago

I don’t think understand what it means to be a tradesman. The only people I tell my entire process to are my partner, and my family and they don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. I will give tips and tricks to people I care about, and offer to help people for free often, but you don’t just tell the entire internet how to do your job because then you don’t have a job.

Teach enough people to fish and the lake dries up.

-2

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

Insane take but ok

AI is already taking your video editing jobs left and right

Weird analogy

7

u/4perf_desqueeze 2d ago

Please, tell me why its insane? Also, what does this have to do with AI?? Wouldnt that make the available jobs and coveted knowledge even more precious?

5

u/topheee 2d ago

Ignore him, he obviously has no idea what he’s talking about

3

u/4perf_desqueeze 2d ago

Yeahhhh you’re right

→ More replies (0)

-5

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

The whole point I’m making, while being aggressively downvoted, is to TEACH people; don’t offer to do it for them

AI can do it for them

Fivr can do it for them

3

u/4perf_desqueeze 2d ago

As a general rule, I agree with you. I’d be nowhere without being taught, but these were all questions I was actively asking.

We don’t know if OP has ANY interest in VFX or not, but they still need VFX. If they aren’t interested, they are well within their rights to not want to do it, hire someone (or in this case, happily accept pro bono labor).

I think the guy you’re responding to is just a vet with some freetime who’s feeling generous and I don’t think it’s productive for anybody to grandstand like this and demonize them for it.

Fuck off mate not everyone has to do every job

-18

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

As we all move forward in this hell scape, I beg to differ

Good luck

7

u/Bozhark 2d ago

Do you feel the same about music?

Best of luck to you too

-4

u/TheSpottedBuffy 2d ago

Music? Absolutely!

Why would I feel differently?

TEACH

8

u/Hunterrcrafter 2d ago

So you also fully grow and make your food from scratch, and build all your tools and items yourself?

-4

This is the type of person who votes against student loan forgiveness. Fuck out of here with that BS

-7

I’m all for student forgiveness, wtf?

I’m literally asking for people to post a process and to not offer service

15

u/Fredlyinthwe 2d ago

And yet you made a rude comment when how to do it was explained. Weird, kinda just seems like you're an asshole.

Why though? It's none of your business, it's not the business of anyone here except OP and the guy offering help. Instead of butting in with "fuck no" you could just keep scrolling and never see this again.

this "teach a man to fish" capitalism bullshit can fuck right off. sometimes you just need to eat and feeding people is one of the coolest things you can do in this world
