If you’re posting a question about your fireplace, please include pictures and/or model numbers.

Pictures are very helpful for users to give accurate advice and information. Fireplace specifics aren’t common knowledge to most people and it’s very typical for people to use incorrect terminology regarding what they have. If you don’t know the difference between gas logs, a gas insert, and a gas fireplace, you really should post a picture to make sure you’re given good advice about what you can do with your fireplace.

Kozyheat to Duravent- adapter required?

Post image
Upvotes

I’m trying to get all the parts together needed for the installer. I ordered what was on the supply list from our quote but I don’t see an adapter of any kind. Me being me, I tried the first piece to see if it would fit but it butts up edge to edge and there are no slots for it to twist into. I’ve tried looking online for what adapter is needed but the manual (kozyheat Callaway see-thru) doesn’t state that any is needed for duravent direct vent pro. Duravent website is no help either that I can see. Can someone point me in the right direction? The installer is out for the holiday weekend and I want to make sure I have everything ready for Tuesday morning install…

Was cleaning our gas fireplace and this piece of the refractory panel popped off. Can I use a heat resistant mortar to glue it back in place, or is this a job for a professional? Thanks!

Should I demo entire bottom part?

Post image

Going to retile my fireplace and my plan was to just tile on top of the existing tile but now I’m thinking of demoing the entire bottom part. What would you do? The house is old so I’m worried demoing the entire bottom part might open up more issues.

Anyone have an idea of a cost estimate to install a natural gas fireplace insert into an existing fire place? Located in PA. Fireplace is located on the outside wall of an extension of the main house.

Vented logs in outdoor fireplace with a closed flue?

Hello, this is probably a dumb question, but I have no experience with this topic. we built an outdoor fireplace in a patio 24x20ft that is covered but open on 3 sides. We want heat from the fireplace but with a flue open I'm afraid all the heat from our vented gas log set will leave out the vent. In outdoor scenarios is it a death sentence to close the flue with our vented log set? With the amount of air movement and open space I would think there's still enough space for toxic fumes to exit. Just thought there might be some professional here that can chime in. We have 24" 55,000 btu gas set

Napoleon Elevation Electric vs Modern Flames Orion Traditional Electric Fireplaces

I need to buy an electric fireplace to put into a renovation for my in-laws. It will be direct-wired for additional heat, and we have plenty of space for framing. I think I have it narrowed down to the Napoleon Elevation vs the Modern Flames Orion, both in 43" configuration. Does anyone have any thoughts on these two comparatively?

Ideas for updating brick

This picture is of our home before we moved in. We don’t like the color of the brick for this fireplace. The first picture is to show what the fireplace looks like, but the second picture is a better representation of the yellow color of the brick. Could we paint the brick or maybe white wash it to update it? Or should we consider replacing the brick altogether with a stone of a different color? We are also planning on putting in a medium-dark hardwood floor. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ruined my living room

Post image

Hi all! I think I threw everything out of order in my living room with a way too small fireplace insert. I’m at my wits end on what to do now that the tile has been set. Any creative solutions to make the fireplace work? Is the only route to have my contractor tear everything out and put a new fireplace in?

Recommendations for up to 60" modern gas linear fireplace for bedroom under $5ke

New addition to our house with master bedroom.

Looking for a simple linear fireplace with the thinnest possible frame (for WAF).

-Natural gas -Decorative glass instead of logs -Remote start would be nice but otherwise don't need any bells and whistles. -Thin frame. Depth not a major issue as this is new framing. - Heat rating not an issue as we are in SoCal. This is mostly for ambiance and to take the edge off on cooler nights. - Length not a major issue but I think minimum 48 up to 72 will fit. 60ish would be nice.

I've looked at a lot of brands recommended here. Napolean frames look too bulky. The Mendota M/L54 looks perfect but also seems to be more expensive than I'd prefer.

Thank you for suggestions of other brands and models that you think may work for us!

Lower BTU beautiful Direct Vent Fireplace?

What is the most elegant, most realistic (not cheesy) direct vent fireplace with lower BTU? Ortal, Heat n Glo and Mendota all really high BTU and i really don’t want $3k in extras for heat-out kit.

Gas Appliance Owner Certification

I am not suggesting it would be a good idea for a homeowner to be certified or licensed to own and operate a gas appliance. But, if it were the case, what would you want a customer to understand? What about gas appliances in both a practical and theoretical way would you want them to understand before they took on the responsibility of owning, operating, and maintaining a gas appliance?

What material is under this paint?

Post image

Home built in the early 40s in San Francisco. The bottom side looks like a mortar bed. Remodels in the 60s and 90s but I’m pretty sure it’s original. The material sounds like stone or concrete when I knock on it. I don’t think it’s plaster.

I don’t know much about how they made this stuff back then.

Trouble getting metal flue installed

Installed some handsome Isokerns: two custom see throughs with class A 16” ID, flue by Durachimney (Earthcore didn’t have 16”ID available). Flue runs are 30’ each.

The trouble is getting someone comfortable installing the Duravent product on Isokern. Compounding a bit is that the plans call for a mechanical top mount damper by KW which would be interlocked with the EIS/IPI (gas logs will be installed even though it’s masonry and class A).

Now getting some static that the products aren’t by the same manufacturer (although Isokern engineers already wrote extensive instructions)…

Who should I call on?

Gas fireplace insert question

I am looking to install a gas fireplace insert. I went to a local retailer and looked at their options specifically heat and glow. The price is range anywhere from $2000-$5000. I was wondering if going to Home Depot or Lowe’s would be more cost-effective versus the higher quality of fireplace sold from a retailer. What do you guys think?

Am I going to regret painting this trim white?

Looking for recommendations to improve the look of this fireplace and mantle. Easiest and trendy option is to paint the trim white, but I’d like to hear any other suggestions!

P.S. yes that’s an inconveniently placed window above the mantle.

Basement getting smoked out

Hello. I have a stack with 3 flues. Two fireplaces and one furnace. When I turn on the top fireplace in the first floor my basement gets smoked out. Any tips on why this is happening ( I believe theres a break in the flue) and thinking about doing a wood insert with a new vent.

We only really use the first floor fire place too so it’s constant. The smoke is worse in the beginning but I think it’s more then just a cold flue because I’ve tried to start the basement fire first to warm up the flue but it still gets smoked out

Im getting a cleaning done and want this done before winter as i use the finished basement. I attached a picture

All help/opinions are welcome. Thank you

Taking out fireplace to put in wood stove

Impossible to get a good photo. House is from late 1800s or early 1900s. Trying to figure out lentil issues. I can't really see anything that looks like one when I look inside. There's the black long bit right under the plaster but it doesn't go all the way across so it's either not the lentil or damaged and needs replaced asap. Trying to figure out if I need to add some supports before pulling more of the mess of filler bricks out.
