News Further cuts at NIOSH including firefighters cancer registry

Among the newly terminated are those employees who worked for the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer. After CBS reported on those firings on Friday night, HHS pushed back, claiming that no CDC employee had been laid off and that the firefighter health and safety programs would remain “top priority” for the agency.

A source who worked for the firefighter registry disputed each of HHS’s claims, confirming that they’d been fired on Friday evening and noting that the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer had already been closed to new applicants. The agency’s website affirmed that the program was taken offline.

Legit question: Outside of writing out state officials, what can we collectively do?

Nothing about this is acceptable.

Since the Executive Branch has the most control over how departments and agencies are operated, contact the White House via this link: https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ . Writing an accusatory, expletive-laden tirade will likely get your message filtered to the circular file. If you want it to be seen by an advisor, frame your message in a concerned but neutral manner. Avoid "dogwhistles", accusatory language, partisan talking points, etc. You can find instructions on how to look up and contact other elected officials here: https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials .

If you're a member of the IAFF, write your District VP, Ed Kelly, etc. Again, going on a tirade is likely to get your message filtered or immediately deleted.

We die of cancer. Never make the mistake of thinking those in power actually care about our health… just look at the 9/11 responders and how they’ve been treated. For now it’s politically inconvenient to be openly dismissive of firefighters, but this administration has made their disdain clear for anyone who wants to live beyond retirement.

Don’t both sides it. There’s plenty of people in power, and those who could have been in power, who do care about you.

There’s one party who has gotten a lot of 9/11 benefits through, and there is another party who opposes them.

Both sidesing drives me insane.

Never said both sides, I said “those in power.” Presently, that is solidly one party out of the two.

Invent a time machine to travel back to 2023? There is nothing much else to do. The administration and it's supporters have their noise canceling ear muffs on and turned up to max so talking gets you no where. Kissing the ring is out of the question unless you have a few million to bribe him with.
