Ask A Firefighter At what age did you start firefighting?

Asking because it’s a late career choice for some, while others do it right after college or even high school.

I was 20. However, my dad started around 48-49. I know a guy who got started around 60. Not as career, mind you, but as a volly. My dad is doing it at various departments part time, though. I do know a guy who is doing it career at 48.

Volly is a volunteer, yes?

Yep. Volly or vollie. Now, I’m not sure if that applies to part time stations that have vollies. Combination stations can be lumped into that category as well. Sometimes. It’s weird.
