Ask A Firefighter At what age did you start firefighting?
Asking because it’s a late career choice for some, while others do it right after college or even high school.

15 1/2 as a Jr volunteer in a small town. Most of the members worked out of town during the daytime hours except for a lady in nursing night school and myself; who was in high school of course. I had full permission from the principal to respond to any calls that beeped-AND I didn’t once abuse that privilege, no lie. A 16 year old with a beeper lol. Anyways, took a night course EMT-B during SR. Year, smashed that NR like it owed me money and went full time at the age 19. Then began my journey to break all those dangerous bad habits and relearn SOPs
