Ask A Firefighter At what age did you start firefighting?

Asking because it’s a late career choice for some, while others do it right after college or even high school.

Started at 16 as an explorer and then full time at 18. I’m now 41.

There was a 50 something year old that went through an academy at a department I used to work at.

Did the 50 year old have a lifetime of fitness prior to that?

No he was horrible. Think more of publicity. That department had a bad habit of pencil whipping and also the chief was a shit bag that would threaten to get rid of you if you didn’t use his playbook. Best thing I did was get out of there.

Not a total fair assessment. He did concrete work before so he was strong, just lazy because he had an almost guarantee from the chief
