We did it too in our academy. Large department on the coast with a big port. Had to jump in in gear and follow the correct procedures to float and wait for recovery. Then for "fun", if you passed, got to swim a lap.

It’s was a 300m qualifier for the rescue division, it wasn’t unsupervised and unplanned. It is a requirement for the rescues

This was an authorized training for members trying to attend swift water classes. This was a swim test which is required before attending the swift water classes.

Kyle was almost done with his 300m test when the personnel nearby watched him stop swimming and sink down into the 4ft section of the pool.

This was being supervised by swift water technicians and BLS crews. He was instantly pulled out of the water.

KC Star has made a disgraceful article full of lies.

To think that KCFD did not do everything in their power to save their brother is just terrible and untrue.

Not outside the city... surrounded by the city. No ALS equipment requirements for every training nor is that feasible. Chief doesn't have to be informed of company level training. Main issue is your lack of information while pretending to be an authority.

How can a public pool not have life safety equipment on scene ? Shit we have AED’s and suction at ours and it’s tiny. And don’t get me started on a swimmer drowning in an indoor pool. Someone seriously screwed the pooch on this one.

They had BLS equipment and an AED. A BLS crew was specifically standing by for this training.
