Just swimming practice in advance of the swim test, or doing something more elaborate like jumping in with full bunker gear?

On duty or off duty?

That would make a world of difference.

Gotcha. Yeah that's not good. Surprised that didn't get released immediately.

Looking into it, you're right. Lots of news articles from sept of 2024 about his death.

Weird.

I took it as practice. I certainly hope they weren’t in the water in bunker gear.

We do this annually/biannuallyish.

We’re coastal with marinas and have had guys go in.

In my training we jumped into a pool in full gear.

That's insane and very dangerous unless you had divers in the pool with you.

No divers. It was to teach us what to do if we accidentally fell into a pool on scene

No shit, stuff can still go wrong quickly.

Oh most certainly.

That seems excessive

The class we took was called drown proofing , full gear including scba and started in the shallow end . There were divers present

Not until it actually happens

Lots of training seems excessive till you need it

Swift water techs don’t go in full bunker gear

We did it too in our academy. Large department on the coast with a big port. Had to jump in in gear and follow the correct procedures to float and wait for recovery. Then for "fun", if you passed, got to swim a lap.

It’s was a 300m qualifier for the rescue division, it wasn’t unsupervised and unplanned. It is a requirement for the rescues
