Just swimming practice in advance of the swim test, or doing something more elaborate like jumping in with full bunker gear?

I took it as practice. I certainly hope they weren’t in the water in bunker gear.

We do this annually/biannuallyish.

We’re coastal with marinas and have had guys go in.

In my training we jumped into a pool in full gear.

That's insane and very dangerous unless you had divers in the pool with you.

No divers. It was to teach us what to do if we accidentally fell into a pool on scene

The class we took was called drown proofing , full gear including scba and started in the shallow end . There were divers present

We did it too in our academy. Large department on the coast with a big port. Had to jump in in gear and follow the correct procedures to float and wait for recovery. Then for "fun", if you passed, got to swim a lap.

It’s was a 300m qualifier for the rescue division, it wasn’t unsupervised and unplanned. It is a requirement for the rescues
