General Discussion Seeking Innovations for Urban Firefighting

Hi everyone,

I'm a cadet with the Military Fire Department in Brazil. For my thesis, I'm looking for innovative technologies and procedures to improve our urban firefighting operations (or some general structures implementations).

I'm hoping to learn from your experiences.

What's a piece of equipment or technology that has significantly enhanced your department's effectiveness in urban environments? (e.g., thermal cameras, cutting tools, or data systems).

What procedural or structural change has made a major impact on how you handle large-scale urban fires?

Your insights are invaluable and could help shape the future of firefighting in my home state.

Thanks for your help!

Ask A Firefighter What is the "official" name of this side saddle trough?

Post image

Our mechanic is needing to know the official name of this side saddle, to replace a damaged one on an Engine. The TO, diagrams, schematics, etc do not say a name or refer to it. We've called it trash line beds, side saddles, side buckets, etc.

Anyone know what the OFFICIAL name is?

At 7pm a 10-75 was transmitted for a fire in a 6 story apartment building. Minutes later, a 2nd alarm was transmitted at fire was blowing out the windows and heavy fire was found throughout a 5th and 6th story apartment. A mattress and debris was engulfed in fire on the sidewalk before a few chauffeurs stretched a line to extinguish it.

Ask A Firefighter Pet Safety Device for Home Fire?

Hi all! I’m a student designing a product for protecting pets in case of a home fire while nobody is around. I have an idea, but would be grateful to get input from the experts!

The product is a smart pet kennel opener/closer linked to an app, but thinking of possibly extending it to doors to give it a more general use. The idea is that if a fire breaks out while people are out, you could open the kennel if it’s in the area affected by fire, or close it to prevent your pet from running into a dangerous area. I read that closing all doors can slow the spread of a fire, so perhaps the ability to remotely control doors while out could help?

Also curious about the protocol for rescuing pets during a fire and general pet safety: - How do FFs approach house fires when pets are inside? - In terms of fire safety, is it better to keep pets in a kennel/confined space or let them roam free? - How big is the risk of the kennel being in an affected area? How does that compare to the risk of a pet running and hiding in a tight spot like under a bed? - Can FFs reach those small spaces like under a bed? - Any experiences rescuing pets in a house fire?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated and thank you for your hard work and bravery🫶🏻

General Discussion Refusing to work with one individual?

Has there ever been an instance where there was one person in particular that you just refused to work with? And I’m talking you don’t want to work with them out of fear for your own safety, not just because you didn’t like them.

Myself and another individual from my department do not get along. There have been some things that unfolded outside of work that proved to me that they are not a good person and we quickly were no longer friends. However, I try my best to not bring that into work. You don’t have to like someone, you just have to work with them.

I am able to avoid this person for the most part. But in the rare occurrence that we have worked together, they have quickly proven to me that they are not under the same belief of not bringing this outside conflict into work. I have tried being the bigger person and working willing with this person for 24 or 48hrs at a time, but they continue to act hateful and disgusting towards me.

Every decision or action I take is questioned and criticized, I get scoffed at for even speaking, and to be completely honest, I am not confident at this point that they would put their life on the line for me if I needed it. I am constantly treated like I know nothing despite having more time on the job than them. Any approach I’ve made at resolving this and speaking about it directly with this person has been met with complete immaturity (name calling and blame game). And even their company officer is letting this behavior slide and chalking it up to “can’t force you guys to like each other”.

I don’t want to be friends with this person. All I ask is that Im able to have a little faith and trust in the people I’m spending my 48hrs with. If this continues to become a safety concern, am I right to take this further up the chain and voice my concerns?

"Chief said so.."

"You revert to the level to your training"

"I'll do it next shift"

"Hardest decision of everyday is what's for lunch"

I was on vacation near a river and I ran into a crew doing swift water rescue class and I chatted with them for a while and a couple instructors ended up asking me for some help moving something while the class carried on. They then gifted me a badass SORT patch but seeing as im a rookie i dont want to put it on anything that would indicate im trying to steal valor. What would you put it on?

Tools/Equipment/PPE The rear gate of this engine from Hamburg, Germany doesnt open any further

and doesnt need to, all of the possibly needed equipment is stored on the sides or under the crew seats, Its 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) long 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) wide And 3.18 meters (10.4 feet) tall Tiny if you compare it to US trucks, but it gets the job done just as good, if not better (but that "better" probably just because germany is all about fire safety)

Employment Questions Weekly Employment Question Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Employment Question Thread!

This thread is where you can ask questions about joining, training to become, testing, disqualifications/qualifications, and other questions that would be removed as individual posts per Rule 1.

The answer to almost every question you can ask will be "It depends on the department". Your first step is to look up the requirements for your department, state/province, and country.

As always, please attempt to resource information on your own first, before asking questions. We see many repeat questions on this sub that have been answered multiple times.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • I want to be a Firefighter, where do I start: Every Country/State/Province/County/City/Department has different requirements. Some require you only to put in an application. Others require certifications prior to being hired. A good place to start is researching the department(s) you want to join. Visit their website, check their requirements, and/or stop into one of their fire stations to ask some questions.
  • Am I too old: Many departments, typically career municipal ones, have an age limit. Volunteer departments usually don't. Check each department's requirements.
  • I'm in high school, What can I do: Does your local department have an explorer's program or post? If so, join up. Otherwise, focus on your grades, get in shape and stay in shape, and most importantly: stay out of trouble.
  • I got in trouble for [insert infraction here], what are my chances: Obviously, worse than someone with a clean record, which will be the vast majority of your competition. Tickets and nonviolent misdemeanors may not be a factor, but a major crime (felonies), may take you out of the running. You might be a nice person, but some departments don't make exceptions, especially if there's a long line of applicants with clean records. See this post... PSA: Stop asking “what are my chances?”
  • I have [insert medical/mental health condition here], will it disqualify me: As a general rule, if you are struggling with mental illness, adding the stress of a fire career is not a good idea. As for medical conditions, you can look up NFPA1582 for disqualifying conditions, but in general, this is not something Reddit can answer for you. Many conditions require the input of a medical professional to determine if they are disqualifying. See this post... PSA: Don't disqualify yourself, make THEM tell you "no".
  • What will increase my chances of getting hired: If there's a civil service exam, study for it! There are many guides online that will help you go over all those things you forgot such as basic math and reading. Some cities even give you a study guide. If it's a firefighter exam, study for it! For the CPAT (Physical Fitness Test), cardio is arguably the most important factor. If you're going to the gym for the first time during the hiring process, you're fighting an uphill battle. Get in shape and stay in shape. Most cities offer preference points to military veterans.
  • How do I prepare for an interview: Interviews can be one-on-one, or in front of a board/panel. Many generic guides exist to help one prepare for an interview, however here are a few good tips:
  1. Dress appropriately. Business casual at a minimum (Button down, tucked in long sleeve shirt with slacks and a belt, and dress shoes). Get a decent haircut and shave.
  2. Practice interview questions with a friend. You can't accurately predict the off-the-wall questions they will ask, but you can practice the ones you know they probably will, like why do you want to be a Firefighter, or why should we hire you?
  3. Scrub your social media. Gone are the days when people in charge weren't tech-savvy. Don't have a perfect interview only for your chances of being hired gone to zero because your Facebook or Instagram has pictures of you getting blitzed. Set that stuff to private and leave it that way.

Please upvote this post if you have a question. Upvoting this post will ensure it sticks around for a bit after it is removed as a Sticky, and will allow for greater visibility of your question.

And lastly, If you're not 100% sure of what you're talking about, leave it for someone who does

General Discussion Unication G1 won’t go off.

My apologies if this isn’t the most appropriate place to post this, but there aren’t really any subreddits dedicated to this kind of thing.

My pager will go off for certain tones like 894.7 802.0 and 686 545.3, but it won't go off for these two for some reason: 804.6 680.1 and 742.7 and 848. I have spent hours tinkering around and just can't get it to work. The tones work fine on my friend’s minitor I programmed for him, and they are the correct tones. Any help would be really appreciated!

I don't know if we can share our own videos here but There is a video I recorded as a search and rescuer of the chaos that occurred during the Bursa, Türkiye forest fires. I tried adding subtitles in different languages, but I think the translation was very poor. I suggest you try the subtitle option.

Ask A Firefighter What size are the threads on hydrants?

My company contracts for a city near where I live and we spray weeds for them. We have approval from the local FD/water dept. to fill our water tanks from a hydrant in town. They gave me a coupler that attaches a garden hose to it but I would rather use an actual fire hose. I bought a 3 inch hose but it is just to big. Then I got a 2.5 and it’s too small. Those are the only options I have found available. Any one have any idea what size it is?
