Ideas for updating brick

This picture is of our home before we moved in. We don’t like the color of the brick for this fireplace. The first picture is to show what the fireplace looks like, but the second picture is a better representation of the yellow color of the brick. Could we paint the brick or maybe white wash it to update it? Or should we consider replacing the brick altogether with a stone of a different color? We are also planning on putting in a medium-dark hardwood floor. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you paint it there is no going back, and general consensus has turned against painted brick. But if you're staying there long term do what makes you happy! I think it looks great as is, but maybe I'm just jealous because my fireplace was painted white lol.

I keep hearing more “nays” than “yays” on painting the brick. The white may be a style for only a few years

Tear the brick down to the mantle, drywall the space, and change out the brass glass doors. So many of these 1980s reclaim brick fps are just too big.
