All my best catches happen within 10 minutes of first cast. Honestly I might as well pack up after 10 minutes it’s so predictable 😭

When I was a kid I caught a 28" walleye on my first and only cast.
My parents were checking into our campsite at the office near the shore, and probably to keep me busy and to expend some built up energy after a long car ride they let me fish off the dock. I made one cast and a giant walleye hit it as soon as the jig hits the water.
I got it in, in full view of dozens of people many also trying to fish. I got it in and my parents came out to me holding a fish almost as big as I was. Funny thing is I became legendary that summer as people were talking about the kid that got a 10lbs walleye off the dock. It still remains one of my favorite fishing memories.

Makes me wonder if all my casts after the first are just for nothing, like the fish have already seen and disregarded my sorry attempts

That’s a nice Atlantic! Though I’m curious why keep a fish so darkened up? Usually when I’m keeping salmon if they’re not still chrome I toss em back.

Atlantic's can survive for more than one spawning season, so they don't rot as much as Pacific salmon do when they spawn.

That’s what I figured, I imagine the flesh doesn’t deteriorate nearly as much as they’re not completely depleting their fat reserves. I process thousands of these guys daily, and we do sell but coloured up ones though they’re sold as a lower grade compared to the bright ones.

Yeah, ive eaten way darker Atlantic's than this, they aren't as good as a silver fish but they are better than a boot king any day of the week, the texture is a lot less mushy than with dark Pacific salmon. If you were grading them it would definitely be a lower grade but it's not bad at this stage.
