You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.
But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.
Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....
Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

My husband got me into fly fishing about a year ago. I have not gone nearly as much as him over the past year, so my experience is slim. Just wanted to share my cutties just an hour north and south of the New Mexico/Colorado border. Pic #1 NM, pic #2 CO.
Ladies, check out your local fly fishing chapter. Men are an EXCELLENT resource (especially if you’re married to a one) but it helps to be amongst the ladies that struggle like I do. I am a terrible river angler, but out-fished my husband this weekend in an alpine lake. Match your hatch!

Get out of here with your 3wt bow-and-arrow cast. Had my negative 2wt, using a leader manufactured creek-side out of spider webs I took to the face while crawling in here, then perfectly executed a rare Brazilian blow dart cast from the prone position. (Georgia)

Hi guys,
I'm heading to Norway for the first time of my life. After thinking that it couldn't bring any fishing rod I had enough space to fit my rod and a few flies in my luggage.
We plan to do a circle trip (Oslo, Fesheimen, Lom, Stryn, Flam, Bergen, Stavanger, Dalen and back to Oslo) in a camper van. What are the nice rivers where I could find some trout ? I have first identified Hemsila but I have learnt recently that this river has been closed for fishing during the end of the season.
I love trouts and would love to catch some Norwegian cuties but I'm not a great fisherman so I might need a guide. Do you know local guides or website so I can contact one?
I'm used to fish in powerfull alpine rivers mainly with nymph or duo terrestrial/nymph. Do you guys know what techniques works best in Norway?
Do not hesitate if you have any advice for my trip !
Thanks a lot !

Any time I would get there early I would toss a mouse across the holes around me to see if I could find one. Just something I did for the first 30-45 min depending on how early I arrived. After a 2 year hunt, it paid off (was a Morrish Mouse pattern). Caught his buddy on a yellow / brown feather streamer not long after.

I was gifted an old Hardy Bamboo rod, serial number and writing identifies it as a Hardy Palakona Splitcane Bamboo "Traveller's Rod" from 1957. It seems to be 7ft, it fits snuggly into a canvas wrap and metal tube for storage. It has wooden plugs for each section, and it has an additional tip and mid section, which seems to allow changing to a heavier weight, although I have no idea how to determine the weight of the rod. It is in beautiful condition except for one eyelet on the heavier tip section.
If anyone can provide any info on this rod it would be greatly appreciated! Its a bit of an heirloom, but I would love to find out if I can (or should) fish with it, or if the eyelet can be repaired.

So I’m just getting into fly fishing. Have sourced together a 5wt setup. I live in indiana with not many great trout fisheries. But i am heading to maryland at the end of November. And im planning on fishing the north branch of the potomac or possibly the savage river time permitting. Any help on those waters would be greatly appreciated.

17 inch rainbow ate a nymph just as I was thinking to head back to the car for the rain. It fought me hard and was spooling out line a few times as the rain got harder. By the time I got it in the net rain was really coming down hard.
Didn’t take a picture because of the rain so I just wanted to post here to help me remember.
Anyone else ever catch one right as the weather turns?

Reddington field kit trout spey rod snapped in the butt section when I lifted the rod up to set the hook. My hands were on the cork, and I didn't lift it very hard. Rod has barely been used and never dropped, hit into stuff, etc.
Pretty frustrated as this is the 2nd time the rod broke (sent it back for warranty when it broken with one day on the water) and I have only used it 3 times total. First time it snapped in the lower 2nd section while casting and this time it snapped in the cork butt section just from lifting the rod to do a hook set. I have never broken a rod until this thing.
Anyone else have a rod break like this and if so, what were you doing?

Lost this fly years ago but remember it being amazing. Does anyone know the name?

Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to fly fishing and had an interesting (and frustrating) experience today. I went to a spot here in North Carolina and saw multiple trout that were easily 17+ inches. The water was nice and cold (but not too cold), the day was cloudy, and morning temps were around 65°F.
I threw everything I could think of at them—streamers, dry flies, nymphs, even a pink trout worm—but nothing got any attention. They just weren’t having it.
Any tips on what I might be doing wrong? Is it presentation, fly selection, timing, or something else? How do you approach situations like this?

Just got back from a trip to chessman canyon today. Sitting here wiped from that hike in and out and wondering if anyone has any info or stories on the WigWam Club? Everything I searched is several years old.

Just wondering if they are older or 1970s. We fished a lot when I was younger but never fly fishing.

Every-time I get a good strike and get hooked up I lose the lure. I’m using a good knot. 5 weight 8 ft rod, new 5 pound leader no tippet. It comes untied or the line breaks off not sure. Small bass or large bream. What am I doing wrong? Need bigger weight leader or am I whipping my popper to death and stressing my leader?

About 10 miles hiked today between a few different streams near the NC/TN border. Much of it through rhododendron and nettle hell but it was well worth it to find fish that likely haven’t seen a person before.
