i had the tiga cola chicken, crispy chili pork, broccoli, cabbage, and some rice and a iced tea. for the price this was a delicious meal, each bowl is 2.50-5$. they have this wagyu spicy salsa and it was so good, i added that to almost all of my bowls, if you like spice you will enjoy it. the crispy chilli pork was the only item i thought was mid because it was pretty dry. i paid 23$ for this with tip.

DISCUSSION How does eating at Sizzler work?

Please don't be mean, I know how pathetic this sounds, but I was too anxious to ask the waiter and I can't find anything online 😭

Is Sizzler a buffet? Do all entrees come with access to the salad bar? Or do you have to order the salad bar to get access to it (including the hot bar and desserts)? Are all the drinks free, or just the water?

WHERE CAN I FIND Atmosphere like Dan Sung Sa?

Took some out-of-town family to Dan Sung Sa and they were blown away. So was I as it was my first time, I was a longtime devotee of OBBear (rip) and never made the effort until now. The problem is, now the out-of-towners have an expectation for vibes like these. What other spots have a similar vibe/decor/energy? Doesn’t have to be exact, and doesn’t have to be Korean, or in Ktown. I’m just curious what comes to mind.

Is there any place that sells this type of yogurt? I had it in Beijing and am missing it so much! It’s more of a pudding and not a drinkable yogurt.

Closing LAST CALL for a Los Angeles legend: Cole's French Dip agent Derrick Moore is accepting offers to buy the joint through Monday, August 25. Pass it on to all your rich dreamer pals--even the ones you kind of hate. What kind of a second rate city are we if we can't Save Cole's?!

WHERE CAN I FIND Looking for a specific ceviche pop-up vendor that I haven’t seen in a while (Cypress Park)

They used to pop up on the weekends across the street from Loquat. They were on the corner of Alice St. and Cypress Ave.

Haven’t seen them in a while and hoping they just moved spots, but I didn’t grab their card and I unfortunately don’t remember their business name… just where they were.

I know there are a ton of options and other vendors, but I really like how much thought and care they put into their food, it just really stuck out and I’ve been hoping I can find them. Any leads are helpful thank you!

Westside Finally tried The Apple Pan - wow it Sucked

I’d been excited to try Apple Pan ever since we moved to LA 2 years ago, and the other night I finally got around to it. Sadly it was one of the most disappointing burger experiences of my life.

After about 15 mins they call what sounds like my name, but some other guy immediately jumps up grabs it and walks out. I assume I must’ve just misheard my name, he probably had a similar name and my order will be out shortly.

After about 5 minutes the guy that took (what turns out) was indeed my order brings it back and explains his mistake. The Apple Pan guy then just calls out my name.

I explain that I don’t love the fact that some random guy just had my order in his car for 5 minutes - I don’t know whether he’s picked at it or what, and politely ask if I could have a fresh order. They agreed and took my order back inside.

Another 10 minutes go by and they bring out what suspiciously looks like the same bag as before (original receipt still stapled to it). I open it up and sure enough both the burger and fries are totally cold.

Clearly they just took my original order inside, let it sit on the counter for 10 mins, and then brought it back out trying to pass it off as a fresh one. By this point it’s taken 30 mins to get a damn burger and fries and I had shit to do with my evening, so I just ate it. But damn I’d rather go to McDonalds or Burger King, at least there when the burger and fries get to me they’re hot. Even if the burger had been hot, it was mid at best, they use some weirdly sweet sauce which threw me. Eating a cold burger that you’re not sure if some random member of the public has picked at will tend to leave a bitter taste in your mouth regardless.

I don’t blame Apple Pan for some random guy walking off with my order. I do blame them for trying to pass off a fresh order as one that’s first had a tour of the inside of some guys Acura, and then sat out on the counter for another 10 mins.

I know I was just unlucky, and I’m sure if there had been space to sit inside it would have been a different experience, but from an ā€˜LA Institution’ it was a shit time and I won’t be going back.

THE BEST PLACE IN Best high quality groceries (meat/produce) thats worth the price near the South Bay?

New to LA / South Bay, what chains, or even individual stores would you all say have high quality groceries that's worth the price? Looking specifically for meat and produce as a priority, Open to spending as long as its not Erewhon level

Currently shopping at Aldi but not sure if its actually the best for the money

for a general step up I was thinking of trying Whole Foods or H-Mart. Also Costco but I'm shopping for one so was hesitant on that. I've actually read some bad things about Trader Joes meat and produce so wasn't sure

Also know that farmers markets are good but wanted recs other than that

DISCUSSION What LA restaurants have gotten better lately?

Lots of talk about places falling off, but what spots are getting better? I’ve been going to El Dorado Pollos A La Brasa in Pasadena for a couple years and lately the chicken has been even better (the chicken skin was absolutely perfect last time I went) the fries are significantly better than they used to be and the side salad was outstanding. Used to be a once in a while spot for me but I’ll prob start going a lot more now. Any others?

Hi, I’m taking my boyfriend out to LA for his birthday and was hoping to see if anyone knew if Bar Sawa or Sushi Takeda would be a better omakase and experience for him? Morihiro and Kaneyoshi don’t have any available dates when we’re going unfortunately but I came across these two and am torn between which one is better. If you have any other suggestions lmk!!

petitgrain boulangerie croissants and flat white. so good, the ham and cheese was great and did not expect the whole grain mustard in there. pistachio lemon croissant was good too, i wish the two components switched places though: a lemon zest with pistachio cream inside.

yeem’s ube buttercream latte. really decent drinks here i also had a regular matcha. small space but the vibe is chill and welcoming and the girls sling out these drinks so fast that anybody just stopping by to pick up is in and out so it never felt crowded (i was in there reading)

broken mouth DTLA beef plate and bread pudding (not pictured). the lunch plate was really good, and so much food i split it into two meals. the beef had such good flavor and the sauce really enhanced it, although it did have a bit too much vinegar imo. the dude was so nice he even offered me a free drink for waiting (15 min?). the bread pudding was a bit dry but otherwise good flavor. i would still skip that next time though.

Hollywood Connie and Ted's offers three kinds of clam chowder

I saw it mentioned in a different topic some months back and made a note to go try it sometime, which I was able to do today.

Left to right: Rhode Island Clear, New England, Manhattan.

Important to note: I asked for a cup of each, not the "sample of all three," so the portion amount would likely be different if you asked for the sampler.

My personal ranking would be New England > Rhode Island Clear > Manhattan, but I think all three were good, and it really depends on what you're interested in. I found out that I, personally, don't want my clam chowder to be tomato-based like the Manhattan style. But if you do want that, then you very well might enjoy Manhattan the most. Rhode Island Clear had too light of a broth, in my opinion (I'm not really sure why it is considered a chowder, perhaps someone who knows more than I do can explain?). I would actually say that the New England style even seemed light, but still, it was definitely my favorite of the three.

Hello r/FoodLosAngeles!

These past 2 weeks have been incredible, thank you for coming out to support my sandwiches! In September I will be adding a Saturday location moving around, so far I have Burbank, West Side, The Valley and South Bay requested. If you have any great spots, let me know!

I will, once again, be in the same spot, N Berendo St and Hollywood from 12 to 7 PM (or until sold out).

The sandwiches are smoked short rib, onions, colored bell peppers, garlic and cheddar cheese on handmade rolls, $10 a sandwich and I will have soda and chips for an extra $1 each (I have the real sugar Mexican cokes this week, still just $1)

I have sold out every week since I started posting! Thank you so much for all of the support and I have loved getting to know everybody! You are all such nice people!!

San Fernando Valley Umiai North Hollywood

Umiai is a great sushi spot in North Hollywood that combines a bit of KazuNori and a bit of Nobu.

The place is beautiful and it’s all counter seating

I chose the 5 Handroll set $34 which came with salmon, yellowtail, crab, scallop, and tuna. I loved all except the scallop, nothing wrong with it and I usually do like scallop but this had an odd taste from the sauce and not the scallops themselves.

Also ordered the salmon carpaccio $27 which was phenomenal. I loved the flavors and the different textures between the salmon, crab, and puffed rice crispies. It’s probably one of my favorites crudos or just seafood plates I’ve had in LA.

I asked what else was recommended for the crudo and told that the yuzu yellowtail $25 is their most popular. I can see why. It’s light, fresh, citrusy, and delicious.

For nigiri, I went with: toro $17 big eye tuna $8 seared salmon $12 albacore $8.50 halibut $10 Hokkaido scallops $9 wagyu $25

Each nigiri order was simply delicious. I couldn’t choose a favorite since they were all equally delicious in their own ways.

Service was great but my only complaint would be how the food is served. When you go to other Handroll spots, regardless if you order handrolls, nigiri, plates, etc, there’s an ā€œorderā€ to them, and by that I mean the chefs check on you and wait to make/serve the next dish until after you finish what you’re currently eating. This can be said about many regular sushi spots too. But here, I had my first plate of nigiri, the salmon carpaccio, and first Handroll all delivered at the same time. I was in the middle of eating my carpaccio when the Handroll got soft and the seared salmon got cold. Somewhat minor to me as I’m not a huge complainer for something like this but I do hope that style of service improves! I will definitely be back!
