DISCUSSION What restaurants have all taste and no hype?
Millcross in Culver City matches this chart for me
So did Ceviche Stop when it was in Culver. Haven’t been to it since it moved

u/orangefreshy 10d ago
RIP Ceviche Stop in Culver City... that place was truly great and sad they left due to mayhem. That strip mall is still empty.
To give another CC rec IMO Piccalilli doesn't get enough love. Its the only bar in CC that has both mixology chops and also that neighborhood bar feel where like... they're friendly and talk to you? And the food is bangin'. I bring people there and say "ohhhh we HAVE to get the bread" and they look at me weird, until they try the bread and then it's like ok I get it now

Wait what when did it close and why? Was my favorite ceviche spot in LA
11
u/orangefreshy 10d ago
I think last fall? Or maybe around the start of this year, time has kinda blended together. From what I read it sounded like they kept getting broken into or vandalized so they decided to close and open somewhere else
4
u/lPrayToDog 10d ago
That’s terrible but glad to hear they’re still around in La Puente!! I hope the new location brings them plenty of business and success. Will def have to make a trip out there soon :)
3
u/EjectoSeatoCousinz 9d ago
I bet it had a lot more to do with the landlord raising rent on that entire lot than anything else...

Taco Nazo
14
u/Confident_Scheme_716 10d ago
Came here to say this. I moved out of state and Taco Nazo is quite possibly the thing I miss most. Those are the best fish tacos I have ever had. I miss them dearly.
7
u/howboutislapyourshit 10d ago
There was a place near me that was about 80% there (because Taco Nazo is an hour and 10 min away from me), but sadly closed down.
I don't even know of another place that comes close to Taco Nazo for fish tacos. I'm only in the area once a year when I go to LAX for a vacation.

Miya in Altadena. I never hear it mentioned when people talk about the great Thai options in LA, likely because it’s out there on its own. Great, great food.

Miya is wonderful. We went to Anajak Thai one night (for just a regular dinner —> all hype/little taste), and got Miya later that same week…Miya was miles better than AT.

Used to be in your shoes.
Apparently makes it at home…she and a family member then drive to LA and parks at various location in Downtown (see her more often in Fashion District). Has a bunch of ceviche in ice in the trunk of her red Toyota (Tercel or Corolla, can’t remember).
This was back in the 2010-2015 though.

That place has totally gone downhill, and tbh the top of the hill wasn’t that high to me
Cali tandoor, Lal Mirch, Southern Spice are much better for that kind / price point of Indian fare
And places like Baar Baar, Badmaash, Tumbi are top - very good Indian with different menus.

Assuming expensive =/= hyped, Capo.
It’s expensive as hell but nobody praises it, I am amazed how many Westsiders have never even heard of it, and it’s our family’s special occasion go-to.
The heirloom garden vegetables (from THEIR garden) with (extra) burrata is an every timer.
The Maryland crab torta will make you never want to settle for a crab cake ever again.
The (secret menu) scallops w pearl pasta haunt your memory when they’re not available.
The white corn ravioli w black truffle is like candy.
I’d rather have the rigatoni ragu than any Evan Funke pasta.
The blackberry cobbler is a worthy heir to Cynthia’s.
Actual service from career servers whose professionalism strikes you by comparison to 99% of places.
All in a casually chic all good vibes setting that makes for a perfect evening every time.

Mayura Indian Restaurant

u/TheRealTroyMcClure 10d ago
Mayura spent forever on the LA Times 101 list and was in the Michelin Guide. How does that qualify as no hype?
→ More replies (2)18
u/SexiMexi209 10d ago
I guess it depends on how hype is defined, but i never see lines there or have to wait to eat. It’s mostly empty when i do go and they don’t seem to care about trendy promotions/decor/marketing. The food kind of just stands for itself.
8
u/johnnyradz 10d ago
i think hype might be defined on whether people see it on social media with "ohmygawd youguyyyyyyyyyyysssss, come with me to _______" accounts.

As someone who has grown up with South Indian food, I find Mayura’s dosas brittle and tasteless
Amaravathi Express in Artesia makes probably the best dosas in the LA area. I’m also pleasantly surprised by Southern Spice in Lawndale

General advice: If a taqueria/Mexican place is named after a person or a place, and there’s a number bigger than 1, I’d say you’re in for some decent food. It’s almost certainly a local eatery that’s seen enough success to have multiple locations. E.g. Tacos Zavalas #2. You’re welcome 😂

KBBQ specializing in "wet aged" pork belly (whatever that means, idgaf it tastes good). They got like 5? different pickles that pair well with the meat. The kimchi jjigae that comes with the combo? It has no business being that good. Better than most restaurant kimchi jjigaes. Super secret: ask them for sesame oil, minced garlic, salt. Their new-ish sweeter garlic sauce is not as good as their old sesame oil concoction. Never heard anyone talking about this place.

I stumbled on a place called El Jocoreño in Larchmont/East Hollywood and there was absolutely no one there but I pigged out on the usual salvo stuff and was pleasantly surprised.
Another favorite Salvadoran spot in Cypress Park is Genesis. It's extremely cheap. The food is incredible. Every time I go I get this nice salt crusted chicken breast plate on top of a few pupusas, maybe some plantains. It's a lot of food. They use purple cabbage for the curtido. Great breakfast spot too!
