Hollywood four days in LA, no car. I did my best!
Thank you guys for all the recommendations! Unfortunately wasn’t able to get to a taco cart, but here’s everything I ate:
El Compadre: first meal off the plane, pretty good
The Win-Dow: tasty, reminded me of 7th Street Burger
Musso & Franks: delicious, strong drink
COFAX pastrami burrito: so freaking good
Meyers Manx Cafe: good food for a museum
Bob’s Raised Glazed: yummy
Singaporean Banana Leaf: tasty, but I think ordering a mild made mine underseasoned
Trejo’s Tacos: 👍
The Griddle: these were massive
Sonoratown: I understand the hype now
Tacomasa: Very good
In n Out: insanely salty
Salsa & Beer: the beans are the best beans I’ve ever had.

I’ve long joked that Salsa & Beer should really be called Bean Dip & Margaritas, precisely because the beans are so fucking good

u/lucas_214 8d ago
I didn’t even realize that I was eating bean dip at first with the chips. I was like wtf kind of salsa is this? Then it hit me

You know, I’ve never bothered to eat at Frank and Son’s. Maybe I’ll change that.
Good thing you didn’t have a car, parking in that lot is an eternal nightmare

oh, you're still here?

Looks like a freshly made corn tortilla. Those always make for good tacos.

No car and made it to all these places? Impressive! Damn salsa and beer beans are top tier.

It's a good mix of high brow and low brow. You get people coming in here with insane lists no one is going to eat at three days in a row. Yours works better.

u/Fabulous-Gas-5570 8d ago
I’ve never heard in n out be described as salty haha I feel like their salt levels are on par with fast food expectations
13
u/tonydtonyd 8d ago
Literally insane to call in-n-out salty
5
u/lucas_214 8d ago
I swear I had a bite of burger that was 100% salt. Maybe the cook was off that day

u/_its_a_SWEATER_ 8d ago
It’s likely the off day, but I’ve been hearing others complain of the same at other locations too. I hope it’s the newbies on the grill?
2
u/cableguy8 8d ago
You can also adjust the salt level.

Eh you haven’t been enough then. I’ve experienced plenty of times it being over salted. I’ve even asked for low salt on follow visits.

It definitely is salty for the average person who doesn’t eat fast food often. I always ask for less salt on mine

u/septembereleventh 8d ago
I cut down my sodium intake a while back, mostly buy cutting down on fast food, and the next time I had a burger at in n out it tasted disgustingly salty. Since then my order is a grilled cheese with a whole grilled onion and chopped chili's. Animal fries if I'm feeling particularly indulgent. I don't miss the beef at all.

You did a great job, if someone had a car and infinite funds I'd still say this was a good run

As someone who is predisposed to hypertension, In N Out with no salt added on the patty and fries is delicious if you're salt sensitive

u/Serialkisser187 8d ago
Curious how you got around?

u/lucas_214 8d ago
I got an uber one subscription before I came which gave me a discount on lime scooters, so I used those, walked a bit, took a couple of bus lines, and a bunch of expensive ass Ubers
12
u/Jealous_Seat_9317 8d ago
This is the way! And uber sucks and I know LA sucks compared to other cities public transit but when I visit a new city I always make sure to commute using public transit. It’s the best way to really truly appreciate a new city

u/lucas_214 8d ago
I didn’t get to the metro but I got a tap card and everything 🙂↕️
5
u/amythewang 8d ago
oh noo!! but that just means you have to come back and use it before it expires in like 5 or 8 years (don't recall off the top of my head)... do a sequel food trip!
2
u/cyberspacestation 8d ago
The one I purchased last weekend is actually good for 15 years. They used to be only 10, though I've had an unfortunate tendency to lose or misplace mine long before then.
All kinds of restaurants mentioned here are easily accessed via bus or Metro rail, and it's so much cheaper than Uber that you'll be able to afford a few more steaks.
2
u/amythewang 8d ago
oh, that's great to hear. I've owned several TAP cards over the years, including when they sold their very first one, and I was so dismayed (and annoyed) to find out later that they all have expiration dates, esp with the later cards I'd owned that had pretty patterns.
1
u/cyberspacestation 8d ago
I've got an old one I bought in 2021 with a 10 year expiration, so they changed it sometime after that.
When they do expire, you can always call or email customer service to transfer the balance to a new card. They're only $2 each.
3
u/amythewang 8d ago
I always use up what I load (tiny amounts right before I need to use the card), so the issue isn't the money but losing the use of a card I love! Alas, nothing's forever in life.

My favorite part of going to the Griddle is watching people who have obviously never been there before each order pancakes for themselves and every person barely putting a dent in it.

I'm about to be there for 4 days with no car. How hard was it to get around in your experience? Was taking Uber really pricy down there? Did you use the Subway, and if so, did it get you pretty close to places you wanted to go? I'll be staying in Culver City and don't know what to expect if I want to get from there to, say, West Hollywood or Pasadena.
1
u/lucas_214 6d ago
I didn’t take the subway but I did take the bus a few times. it was fairly reliable, ran about every 12 minutes. I used the transit app, same as in New York. I highly recommend getting an uber One free trial. It gave me cheaper Ubers and discounts on the lime scooters. The Ubers were expensive to go long distances but that makes sense. Unfortunately I can’t give you advice on how to get from neighborhood to neighborhood bc I don’t really know where they are in relation to each other 😭

u/New_Personality_3884 6d ago
Culver City has the light rail station- will take you straight to Pasadena, Highland Park, even DTLA- you're golden!

u/Bragmihn 5d ago
Oh that was salsa and beers plates, best mexican restaurant ever been to here. Dude you did your 4 days right. 👏🏽

Recently ate at Singapore Banana Leaf and you're right that there's basically no seasoning on the food there (at least when I went). I got a laksa, which tasted nothing like laksa and overall just had no flavor, and the rendang which also basically had no flavor. It was pretty sad.

u/lucas_214 8d ago
Yeah I was a little surprised at how many people said it was the best thing at farmers market. like no way that can be the best

No Korean or Thai food?
2
u/lucas_214 8d ago
I really wanted to try the cheesy tteokboki at Louders but it was really far from me, and looked very expensive. The Thai in nyc is pretty good so I hadn’t looked into that

Where are you visiting from? Hopefully you enjoyed your food! A lot more to experience!

No Thai food (recommend luv2eat Thai) in Hollywood feels like a crime.
But you were also in DTLA and didn’t stop by Koreatown or Langers. Make sure you add that to your list next time.
2
u/lucas_214 7d ago
I do feel like I missed out on koreatown but I didn’t feel like I needed to get delicatessen food in LA, I know it’s classic but we have plenty of amazing ones in New York
2
u/ThePlurnalist 6d ago
Crazy. We just came back from 4 days in New York =)
2
u/lucas_214 6d ago
I hope you went to Katz deli or 2nd ave!!
1
u/ThePlurnalist 6d ago
i did go to 2nd Avenue and dined at Hyun. But I didn’t feel like I needed to get delicatessen food in NY, I know it’s classic but we have an amazing ONE in Los Angeles.

u/guichoooo 6d ago
I ask for no salt on burgers and fries at in n out. The cheese sauce and onions all have enough
1
u/RagsMcTattershanty 6d ago
OMG you went to Salsa & Beer! Well done! That's my favorite place. I don't even like refried beans, but I eat theirs.

Thanks I’ll check it out. Are said beans/bean dip an order or served with the chips?
3
u/lucas_214 8d ago
the bean dip was free alongside the chips, and they tasted identical to the beans on the side of my enchiladas

u/MorePlate4118 7d ago
That rice in the last picture looks undercooked and the beans look wack. I got better beans in my fridge right now.

I’d say you did pretty well with what you had. Which was your favorite?
