Westside FattyMart in Mar Vista MAGA?

Was going through Trump posts to cleanse & block anyone in my life that was remotely supporting MAGA & noticed FattyMart liked some recent posts & older posts.

Can anyone verify? I loved going to this little market, but won’t support it (or Little Fatty) going forward if true.

Westside Is there a better California Roll in Los Angeles? Yama Sushi Marketplace

Genuinely curious because Yama’s CA roll isn’t just delicious, but for the size and only $8, it’s an insanely good deal!

It’s the only CA roll I’ll eat

Westside Finally tried The Apple Pan - wow it Sucked

I’d been excited to try Apple Pan ever since we moved to LA 2 years ago, and the other night I finally got around to it. Sadly it was one of the most disappointing burger experiences of my life.

After about 15 mins they call what sounds like my name, but some other guy immediately jumps up grabs it and walks out. I assume I must’ve just misheard my name, he probably had a similar name and my order will be out shortly.

After about 5 minutes the guy that took (what turns out) was indeed my order brings it back and explains his mistake. The Apple Pan guy then just calls out my name.

I explain that I don’t love the fact that some random guy just had my order in his car for 5 minutes - I don’t know whether he’s picked at it or what, and politely ask if I could have a fresh order. They agreed and took my order back inside.

Another 10 minutes go by and they bring out what suspiciously looks like the same bag as before (original receipt still stapled to it). I open it up and sure enough both the burger and fries are totally cold.

Clearly they just took my original order inside, let it sit on the counter for 10 mins, and then brought it back out trying to pass it off as a fresh one. By this point it’s taken 30 mins to get a damn burger and fries and I had shit to do with my evening, so I just ate it. But damn I’d rather go to McDonalds or Burger King, at least there when the burger and fries get to me they’re hot. Even if the burger had been hot, it was mid at best, they use some weirdly sweet sauce which threw me. Eating a cold burger that you’re not sure if some random member of the public has picked at will tend to leave a bitter taste in your mouth regardless.

I don’t blame Apple Pan for some random guy walking off with my order. I do blame them for trying to pass off a fresh order as one that’s first had a tour of the inside of some guys Acura, and then sat out on the counter for another 10 mins.

I know I was just unlucky, and I’m sure if there had been space to sit inside it would have been a different experience, but from an ‘LA Institution’ it was a shit time and I won’t be going back.

Westside Fire-affected restaurants

Didn’t seem right to me to continue posting as normal. Trying to take initiative, and create what I hope is a thread to document fire affected restaurants.

Starting off, I just learned Moonshadows was destroyed, confirmed on their Instagram page.

Article claims the inspection was carried out after someone got sick from eating the godmother. Definitely alarming because we had the godmother less than a month ago.

Someone also posted a picture of the violations. /img/n5wf3ih93f2f1.png

Westside First time to The Apple Pan, so I went three days in a row with

Since I had clients in the area back to back days, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to try everything that the Apple Pan is known for.

Here’s a summary of what I thought. Overall, it’s a solid diner spot that lives up to the nostalgia with amazing staff. I was helped by Jorge who has been there for 30 years.

Everything is simple yet tasty, fresh and made to order and made very quick. Although it wasn’t busy on any of my visits, I didn’t wait more than 5 minutes for my food to be served.

However - for what you get, the food is very overpriced in my opinion. Yes yes I know inflation, rising costs, etc are all very prevalent especially throughout LA. But $15 for a basic tuna melt is a bit much, and the $10 burgers aren’t exactly much different than what you might find at Bill’s or another neighborhood joint. Charging $3-5 less. I’d like to think of Apple Pan’s burgers as a “homemade In N Out” so there is some advantage, experience wise, eating here.

I wouldn’t go out of my way or go specifically to Apple Pan again, but if I was in the area and needed something quick that would satisfy both my appetite and palate, I would choose an Apple Pan steak burger with fries.

Day 1: Hickory Burger $10.25 Fries $5.00

I LOVE the fries. They’re like the best potato sticks you’ll get - crispy, slightly dry, but simple straight potatoes. They come unsalted. I asked for a side of mayo but they automatically give you a squirt of ketchup.

The hickory sauce is a bit overpowering for the burger. It’s tangy and tomato heavy, like a strong vinegar bbq sauce. Patty is juicy, veggies are fresh, although I wasn’t a huge fan of the giant lettuce mountain in the middle.

Day 2: Steak burger $10.25 Banana cream pie $7.75

I loved the steak burger more. The sauce was more subtle and allowed the burger to be tasted more thoroughly and evenly. The patty was juicy again and all the other components remained the same.

The banana cream pie was more like a straight banana block which I did not mind one bit since I love bananas! A thin layer of whipped cream on top, and the top and bottom of the bananas had a decent layer of custard that was rich and slightly sweet. The crust was disappearing but it was light and flaky.

Day 3: Tuna Melt with grilled onions $15.00 Apple Pie $7.75

The tuna was a bit dry and basic - just mayo and maybe pickles or relish. The bread was toasted nicely and I appreciate that they put cheese on the top and bottom slices. Now what made this a great tuna melt was the whole grilled onions as recommended by my waiter! Was it still $15 worth? I don’t think so. But I think I would’ve been even more disappointed if I paid that without the onions.

Sadly I was not a fan of the apple pie whatsoever. It was sitting in the apple pie juice, and although I love cinnamon, this really didn’t have much flavor otherwise. The apples and crust were both mushy, and the crust left a lot to be desired. It was more like a top sheet than a crust

Westside Tito’s Tacos: It’s Bad

Went there last night after some big hype from a relative. First of all, they messed up our order (particularly galling considering the limited menu to begin with). And even if they got it right, this place is way overpriced for what you get:

Watery, flavorless, overly-puréed guacamole, likely bought in 10-gallon tubs from CostCo.

Horchata is mid, at best. I got light ice, and it still felt and tasted like it was watered down.

Every burrito is at least 60% refried beans. Overstuffed, weak tortillas, total mess, no body, and - shocker - bland flavor.

And the tacos? What makes them famous? This store-bought shredded lettuce and yellow cheese is a hallmark of grade-school cafeteria lunches, not (allegedly) one of the gems of the Westside. The fact they have the temerity to charge additional for these “extras” is a joke.

This is “Mexican” food for whites in Indiana, not L.A.

I should have trusted my rule to only patronize tents or trucks, and after last night, I’ll never flout my own instincts again.

Westside Behold, the $30 sandwich from Tres Mani in Santa Monica

This is a Public Service Announcement. I in no way condone the $30 sandwich. The price was $26.50 plus tax and some obligatory fee, adding up to $30.

It was my first visit, but I guess the guy behind it is famous for something. To me the sandwich was decent, but not as good as the similar one at Bread Head on Montana, also in Santa Monica.

I love this more than Mamie but not quite as much as Lorenzo. But it’s a very close race

I feel like All’Antico is more “homestyle” and rustic as opposed to Lorenzo trying to fancy up a focaccia sandwich. Neither of which is a bad thing.

I ordered the La Paradiso, $18. Full of mortadella, plenty of pistachio paste and pistachio, Rich and creamy stracciatella, and I added tomatoes (no extra charge) for an extra bite and to offset the richness of the sandwich. The mortadella is thinly sliced, soft and savory without being overly salty.

The bread is delicious. Thick crunchy and a bit more dense than Lorenzo.

And the sandwich is HUGE. Half easily filled me up and I saved the other half for later

Westside Pizzeria Sei Omakase… huge letdown

Thumbnail

Let me start by saying I love Pizzeria Sei. Some of the best pizza in LA. I managed to get a spot at their most recent Omakase dinner and… sheeesh it was a mess.

I arrived at 7pm and did not get our first bite until 7:40. All of us were just sitting there with nothing going on. This was the norm, every dish was a 30+ minute wait, and each dish was a single slice of pizza or similar sized item. Mind you the pizza was great but cmon.

After 2:45 in the restaurant and four courses left I left. They apologized and gave me a dessert to take home but boy I feel like I set $200 on fire.

This will be my last post re: this topic, but since the steps I took (which I do not regret) may have changed your support for Fatty Mart (& its brands), I feel it’s fair to share the most recent outreach by Chef/Owner, Dave (David) Kuo.

Do what you will with the information shared, I won’t be going back.

Happened to be in Culver City yesterday late - one of the things I’m interested in is the relationship between Los Angeles and salted, cured meats, so made my way over to Johnnie’s Pastrami for this monster

$17.95 for the sandwich - I don’t think I’d get the chili fries next time unless I’m with someone else.
