Q&A : Dealer | Ordering | Financing I’m a Land Rover technician and my parents are soon buying a ford f150. Should I warn them against the power boost or is it worth the added complexity/expense/features
Looking for input from any Ford techs who’ve got a nice averaged out exposure to these over individual reviews and I’m mostly finding individual reviews online. Thanks for any help!

If they ran full synthetic oil and did regular service, they would be ok. Most of the turbo failures I saw were in vehicles that had a varnish on the inside. Look at the service records if you're buying used. I would be more worried about the phasers and timing tensioner than the turbo. But if there is no rattle on start up and the oil changes were high quality and on time, it should be fine.

Thank you for this!! Any “tells” to look out for on a brand new model? Any complete red flag trims/options?
I know our stuff did but usually came with refreshes and new models, not so much once we were a few years in.
Thank you so much for your input, it’s really helpful!

Not really. I haven't worked for Ford in the last 5 years. Sync got flakey sometimes, and I was never fond of the Sun Roof option on the trucks and SUVs, but the ones I did were buttons and glass tracks. Easy fixes, so meh. Also, I would flush the transmission more often than recommended, especially if you tow. But you can look up TSB's and recalls for the specific model years. That will give you an idea of what to look closely at.

I would definitely be wary of hybrid power train, especially one thats not toyota. Ford doesn’t really have the best track record for their hybrid vehicles.
Having said that, the 3.5 twin turbo which is a 3.5 eco boost is one of fords best modern engines. So maybe I would try to push them towards a full gas truck.

Thanks!!! I couldn’t steer my pops away from the hybrid once he felt the torque so fingers crossed they picked a cherry!

I had a powerboost for a short while and it was pretty amazing to drive, but very complicated mechanically and electronically. Ended up having a cracked cab shell and I was happy to give it back and get the conventional 3.5.

Engine issues aside, tell them they don’t have to settle for leaf springs and jerky transmissions. Look at Toyota or if they want American then RAM.

Well you should know that Ford has far less maintenance and repair bills compared to POS over priced imported Land Rovers😝😝😝
