Crossover theory (never have I ever)
I recently finished watching both the series "Fresh off the Boat" on Netflix and "Never Have I Ever" on Hulu. Both of these TV shows explore themes of adolescence through the eyes of an Asian kid. In "fresh off the boat" our protagonist Eddie is a born and raised American with parents from China and in "never have I ever." our protagonist is Devi, another born and raised American kid with parents from India. Although Eddie and Devi have different personality types, I do believe that their shared family structure and asain/South Asian backgrounds as well as their love of hip hop music, pop culture, and being social butterflies... If they had been at the same school at the same time in the same universe.. I think they would have been really good friends or a cute couple.
& If you watched one series and liked it, I would highly recommend the other!! Both great shows.

It's interesting you say this because shortly after my binge of Fresh Off The Boat, I was suggested Never Have I Ever and really enjoyed the show as well! Would highly advise it, though the show has a clear shift in concept after season 1.
As for your actual thought, I agree! They definitely have some overlap in personality and background that could make it interesting. I dont know if I'd ship them, but all Devi's boy choices sucked! I was and still am team Aneesa.

As an Indian, I relate to FOTB except Jessica lol. My mom was strict but never at the expense of my happiness.
