I have actual pro athletes in my family. One of them was fond of saying that the best athletes in the world are ones we will never hear about, because their circumstances- gender, orientation, family- led to them only playing the sport in rec leagues or coaching their kids teams. It’s like that scene in Field of Dreams with the kid who later became a doctor: “No, son. [not being able to play baseball wasn’t the tragedy.] If I’d only been a doctor for five minutes, that would have been a tragedy.”

Pro athletes need three major things: natural athleticism, ability (two separate things), and luck. That’s stuff you can’t work your way into having. You can’t buy it. You can’t pray it into existence. It just is.

Paul is wasting his own time, and I’m starting to suspect everyone’s cool with letting him sit with his own delusions because whatever he’d do otherwise is even less useful. Most people get past the pro athlete dream once they hit middle school, for good reason. There’s a reason a lot of middle aged dads aren’t hustling on the court- because pro sports are a young man’s game. Paul isn’t young.

I don't get this about Christian public figures who think they're doing things for and representing the Lord through their talents and hobbies. The public is not going to look at what you do and think it's an act of glory. They may not even be aware of or care that you're a Christian. If you're playing pickleball, their pov of you will be based on how well you play pickleball.
