Results A message from a Head of Year 11 if you're feeling awful

If you are full of regret and feeling hopeful remember that every results sheet will have it's positives, you might not see it now, but you have your whole life ahead of you. I'm 36 now and doing an MSc. My nextdoor neighbour is 54 and just qualified as a social worker.

Work hard over the next few years and you'll be enjoying adult life before you know it.

Back yourself!

Tips/Help I'm an Exams Officer/Manager. Ask Me Anything!

Hi r/GCSE! I've been an Exams Officer/Manager for 9 years and I'm here to answer your questions. To start this off, here's some that I frequently hear from students:

How do I get a remark?

There's no such thing as a "remark"! It’s a *Review of Marking*. No one marks your paper again from scratch. They review the original marking to confirm whether the mark scheme was followed.

How much does a Review of Marking cost?

Between £50-£70 per paper, depending on the exam board.

Could I get a lower mark back?

Marks can go down as well as up, as can grades. If your overall grade goes down, there’s no turning the clock back – you’re stuck with your new lower grade.

How long does a Review of Marking take?

Reviews take about three weeks to process at most. Overnight at least. Anywhere in between.

What are the chances of my grade increasing following a Review of Marking?

A successful grade increase happens in less than 2/10 cases, so don’t get your hopes up. In my two schools across GCSE and A levels, the average success rate of a grade increasing is 13%.

Can I request a Review of Marking on my coursework unit?

No. Those marks should have been queried before you signed your declaration. Those marks were submitted back in May.

Can I gain access to one of my scripts (exam papers)?

You can request copies of your scripts free of charge. It's best to get your subject teacher’s opinion on whether a review would be worthwhile. Some schools might ask for a small administrative fee. In my experience, downloading papers is a time-consuming faff. Unless it’s needed for a review of marking, ask yourself whether you really need all your papers back.

When do I get my certificates?

Your certificates will arrive at your school in November. Some post them to your home, others host awards evenings. Ask your school about their policy.

When can I resit English or Maths?

You can only resit these in November. These are the only exams you can resit in November.

I'll start answering questions at 4pm on Wednesday the 20th for about an hour. Looking forward to hearing from you all!

General Story time: my physics teacher was switching tabs during his lesson with y11 combined science (not my class) and 🌽 came on the screen.

Upvotes

So yah he is one step closer to getting fired. Basically he was getting the window with the presentation and then all his windows showed and there were 2 naked ppl on top of eachother in an animated roman style everyone was shocked and one of my friends (who i trust very much) was there and she's the one that told me. The entire year-group was talking about it. 5 ppl went and wrote statements and my head of year kept telling them to not tell anyone. Anyway last lesson someone from the senior leadership came in (while my physics teacher was teaching my y10 friends) and talked to him super seriously and then took his laptop while he was teaching.

Thing is even if u r a perv why would u do that on ur WORK LAPTOP? Like it is super easy to trace. So yah he's an incompetent DUMB perv and finally there is solid evidence of his perviness. I also feel like i wanna go up to my head of year and head of secondary who thought i was lying and be like I WARNED U, IF U HAD FIRED HIM IT WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN THIS FAR. They acc lead to 15 year olds being traumatized like i could see it ppl weren't exaggerating they were acc disgusted.

General First day of year 11, went terrible

I had a migraine the whole day, went to medical 3 times and each time they told me that I just want to get out of school, spoiler alert, I didn't. I wanted to stay in school I just needed an ibuprofen. I had 2 hours of tutor and another 30 minutes before lunch. In science I got sat in between a guy who took pictures of me without getting in trouble at all and a girl who has bullied me relentlessly since year 7. I asked to move to one of the eight empty seats and was shouted at. Worst of all, the safe spot for break and lunch made for people who are targeted at school, it was removed due to funding issues. Yet they build a giant wall blocking one of the two mens bathrooms in the main building for no reason. I got about 4 pasta pots thrown at me today and I got a bump on my head from a basketball thrown at me deliberately. Terrible day.

Edit: turns out, I had accidentally ingested mold. My grandma packed me some grapes from aldi, they didn't go out until the 11th of September so she reasonably thought they were okay and at the time there were no visible signs. Thats what caused the migraine and I later went to the hospital 1 hour after posting this.

Tips/Help For those taking GCSE Statistics...

I have seen a few posts in recent days, and I'd thought I'd offer my input for useful resources and other things.

I got a 9 (128/160) and I did Edexcel. I liken this to AQA science (double OR triple) if you do it, it is essentially the same format.

Edexcel offers marks (a set proportion) for equations, just like sciences.

You have 2/3 markers that are very strict to the mark scheme, but as you do past papers (I recommend you do this AFTER your first set of mocks) you'll get used to the key vocabulary you need,

Textbooks:

Ok for this there are three different ones. The CGP ones are very good if you just want to get the concept around your head in a short time. It comes with (albeit) few questions for practice. Highly recommend this for the price it is at. If you cannot afford any of these try and use your local library like I did.

The 'official' Edexcel endorsed textbook. Idk if there is one for AQA, but as far as I am aware, they are very similar specs, so this is something to consider, but you will probably be fine just doing these in class (since our teacher made us do these anyway).

Videos:

Two options here, just go spec point by spec point and watch a video on youtube about it. Only problem is, you'll spend an age just searching what you actually want.

There are two youtube channels (very recent I think). Though I didn't use any of these they have recently come up on my feed.

https://www.youtube.com/@gcsestatistics

https://www.youtube.com/@TheGCSEStatisticsGuy

I don't know about the quality but yeah.

Websites:

There is a huge overlap to GCSE Maths, so you can use corbettmaths, maths genie etc.

There is one specific one called 'statsacademy' which has resources.

And lastly, the only way to get a nine is by putting effort in! Just make sure that you are consistent, leave enough time to get as many past papers in - the more you do and review, the higher chance of that EXACT question coming up in your actual thing.

That is all I can think of.

Question How long before mocks should I start revising?

So my mocks are in late October (22-31) and I don't get any study leave for them. I'm taking 11 subjects (3 sciences, English language and lit, maths, further maths, geo, history, cs and Chinese). Idk when to start revising or how much to do every day. Anyone got any tips? 🙏

Request Gcse posts only

Unpopular opinion but can we agree to keep the sub mostly gcse related? Cause obviously yr 12s can stay here but can we keep all the posts about sixth form problems in r/sixthform cause this is supposed to be a gcse centred sub and there are way to many yr 12 / 6th form posts that have 0 gcse relations

Edit: This doesn't apply if you don't do this

Edit 2: Guys im not fighting your right to stay here 😭😭😭 I'm just saying can we make the posts more gcse centric cause lately it's been feeling more like a sixth form sub than a gcse sub.

General Need advice

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to the UK from Southeast Asia, and because of my age I’ve been placed directly into Year 11, even though I was only in Year 9 back in my home country. The education system here feels very different, and it’s a bit overwhelming since GCSEs are coming up so soon.

I’m taking Sociology, History, and Spanish (alongside the core subjects), and I really want to do well because I’m aiming for strong A-levels and hopefully uni later on. Right now I feel like I’m playing catch-up, especially with how exam-focused everything is. I’m so so so scared and idk what to do.

👉 For those of you who’ve done these GCSEs (or been in a similar situation): • What revision methods worked best for you? • Any textbooks, revision guides, YouTube channels, or websites you recommend for these subjects? • How should I structure my revision time since I don’t have as long as most people have had to prepare?

Any tips or advice would mean so much. I really want to ace my GCSEs even though I feel like I’m starting late.

Thanks in advance!

Results I was a predicted grade 8 eng lit student and I got a 6

And it doesn’t make sense. I requested my paper back and my English head and I noticed that the examiner didn’t annotate my poetry essay properly. Like, 1 annotation per page bad, when my English head pointed out that I had lots of quotes which hadn’t been acknowledged. I got 81% in P1 but 51% in P2, which doesn’t make sense given the fact that I have never received below an 8 in the subject and I felt that English Lit went well.

I reviewed the mark and it was returned within a day of my request with no change, which seems extremely improbable. Not even a single mark changing just doesn’t match with the clear lack of annotation on an essay that was written to my usual standard, and which would have received a 9 had I submitted it in class.

I’m frustrated and I don’t know what to do. I want to get into Oxford, but they look at GCSEs, so I can’t have this 6 looking bad on my results. My whole future could be jeopardised by this, and every teacher I talked to before the review said the grade would almost certainly raise to a 7 at least when I reviewed it, if not further. My mental health is suffering because of all this.

I just don’t know what to do. Should I attempt to review again and risk spending more money? I just don’t feel like the marking could be ruled fair in any situation here and I’m honestly spiralling.

Edit: I have now been made aware that the next step is to appeal, and that it is expensive. I should clarify that a possible raised issue by my head of English after the poor mark could be my handwriting, which is a result of my autism hindering my motor skills. This could theoretically help my appeal, but I’m not 100% certain on that. I have extra time, by the way; it was not enough time to tidy up my handwriting. My school never made me aware that my handwriting could be an issue.

Edit 2: The evidence about how sure I am that I did well: I am the user who posted the writing in fire GIF post about the unseen poetry. I got 12/24 on that question according to the examiner.

Tips/Help Can having a Saturday job negatively impact my GCSEs?

Okay so (i’m gonna bring back some childhood trauma for some of you guys lol) my local kumon centre is looking for some workers and as an ex kumon student i’m pretty familiar with how they work and what i need to do. It starts at 9:30 and finishes at 12pm and the pay amazing (£120/pm) especially for someone my age who literally only buys clothes lol.

My Mum is a bit ambivalent about the idea because she thinks i should be revising instead of working but my Dad is pretty for the idea (only cause it means i won’t be asking him for money anymore lol) I get where my mum is coming from though, i mean since i am aiming for all 9s and still have quite a long way before i’ll get there is it the best idea to work instead of revise?

Results I got a grade 6 in Art ☺️

After being inspired by another person who made a post about their art grade! This is my art grade and a major piece that I made for it! The title is not fully accurate as I did WJEC Art and Design (I’m from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿), but I had a B which is an equivalent to a grade 6 using the numerical system :D.

Knowing all that, this piece was my final piece for my coursework and it was meant to be a silk scarf that you could wear and it took me actually forever to make 😭. I started this piece on the 8th of November 2024 and I didn’t finish it until the 10th of December of the same year! All in all, I think I spent about idk, 30+ hours on this piece! Anyways while it isn’t perfect (if you zoom in, you’ll be able to see a few little imperfections here and there lmao). It was a very hard piece and it was quite awkward for me to do so I’m proud of the result and how well it came out despite all the little imperfections etc!

For anyone who are wondering about what artist I was inspired by and all that stuff! I was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s patterns and I spent a lot of my coursework looking at his work, experimenting with different patterns and using vibrant colours etc! The medium I used was silk paint and I took inspiration from another silk artist who used vibrant colours in their work (I kinda tried to mix their works together in this piece) which I think I did an okay job with doing! Anyways, the silk artist was Virginia Wilson and I’m going to link her website down below if you’re interested in seeing any of her art pieces. She does a lot of work on nature and goddesses etc, and I think she’s very talented in what she does!

Here’s the link to her website:

https://virginiasilk.com

To sum up everything! Knowing all of this, would I have liked a higher grade, yes! I did put in a lot of time into my art work so it would’ve been nice if I had gotten an A/ a 7/8 etc! However, I understand that at times my work was a little bit messy and I think a B/a 6 was fair for the quality of my work and I can’t complain that much about my grade at the end of the day, as I was still able to do what it was I wanted to do when it came to school so I’m happy all things considered! Anyways, the first picture is the finished piece, the second is midway through the process and the last picture is the start of the piece! Thank you for looking at my post 🫶

General Choices

I pick my gsce’s pretty soon and idk what to choose since I want to do something like working in the medical field/ forensic person when I’m older. I’m not sure if I need any specific gsce’s for those types of jobs. At my school there’s also a criminology a-level I’m pretty sure so if anyone’s taken that do I need any specific gsce’s for that 😭

I feel kinda lost bc a lot of my friends and stuff sound like they know what they’re gonna pick and what jobs they want etc but I don’t know and I feel like times running out
