Want to learn Greek!
Hi all!
Me and my fiance are moving to greece in 2/3 years and we both want to able to learn as close to fluent as we can, we want to be able to speak as much greek as we can!
Are there any apps anyone can recommend that we can use?
Many thanks Sam

Go to your local Greek Orthodox Church. Almost all of them have a Greek School program and many offer adult classes. If adult classes are not offered, the teachers might be able to tutor you separately or suggest an adult program in the area.

I second this.
I did this and then got a free Duolingo trial to force myself to keep practice reading...it's so bad in comparison. When teaching χ, it uses the name José as an example... and pronounces it with an English x sound.

"LanguageTransfer" app is great for the very beggining! It focuses on getting you to speak quickly by understanding the structure and logic of the language first. It's a learning app with many languages, but the creator is a cypriot greek himself !! having a native is always awesome. Highlyyyy recomend it!
Meanwhile I will definitely tackle the written greek and alphabet to get your brain used to the characters and their sounds as next all other materials will require you to be able to read. Youtube has a lot of this.
Also ask chat gpt for a 100 list of most common greek words for everyday/or any specific area you see yourself immersing in.
Καλή τύχη with your learning!🍀

Language transfer is the best! I would use it in combination with Chickytutor.com which is like an interactive version of language transfer 👍

Preply is a decent app but the more you talk with Greek people the better you will be.Feel free to express yourself in our language and just don't care about if it's right or wrong...just talk 😉

Duolingo for learning the alphabet and increasing vocabulary however leaves lots of gaps
Language transfer to help with grammar and conversation skills! Little tips on how words are formed to help remember them
Akelius is fantastic to learn the alphabet and grammar with games, songs and quizzes.
All free! All will help get a grasp on the language, especially reading and writing but nothing beats learning with a native speaker.

As a French learner trying to find apps has been hard I can only find ones that help with some basic grammar and vocabulary but other than that they don’t seem useful. I could help you though I’m a native speaker in Greek and I have a certificate in the English language

People will tell you how horrible Duolingo is. Whole reddit areas are devoted to the disparagement of DuoLingo. I did all of it. Took 660 days. It's going to be a slow process to learn Greek unless you have a teacher 3 days per week. Currently I'm reading a Disney novel for children. Lots of youtube videos. The ERTFlix app by the ERT TV channels is quite good and works on every device, even casting devices.

Of course you do. Until no one speaks English or you want their resources... And of course showing why Nazis deserve to be k.o.ed

I used Preply - about 15 euros per hour. I went from A0 to B2 in a year. PM if you want a referral link :)

No way you did B2 in a year. How much did you study?

Maybe somewhere between b1 and b2 is more accurate. But I did a one-month intensive learning course and weekly lessons. Outside of that, I lived in Athens for six months out of the last fifteen, and speak Greek daily with my partner.

There are so many other teachers who offer more affordable lessons for poor people like us. Look for other teachers on Preply. I've found a tutor who offers classes for an affordable price.

I am also myself a super tutor on Preply. I am giving lessons with 27€ per 50 minutes.
If this price sounds like it is good for you, you can send me a message and let me know about your goals 😊

Totally understood! There are plenty of options & more affordable prices among tutors! 😊
But, in case you really want to give your money to a tutor that worths it & see real progress, speak even from the first lesson & learn useful phrases, feel free to message me! 😇
