Declension of Nouns

Καλησπέρα όλους! I have a question regarding the neutral noun - το πέλαγος, and the feminine noun η θάλασσα. In my native language both equal to the Ocean/the Sea.

Can someone explain the difference?

Ευχαριστώ 🙏

AI Assisted Song Translation, how is it and how flexible are accented syllables?

Calling this a translation seems to have caused confusion, it is a rewrite using an existing melody. I just did this for fun and for something to hum while learning, one of my favorite Swedish songs, En Karusell by ABBA. I started out just having ChatGPT do its best to to translate the song and make it rhyme, then went in making line by line changes for tone and clarity, looking up replacements on my own and running the grammar by Gemini.

The syllable counts fit but I'm not sure in music, is it ok if emphasis is placed on a syllable that is not accented, or if a non accented syllable is stretched? For example [An edit has already been suggested for this verse]:

Πάρε το ρίσκο

τι θα προσφέρει;

Ίσως φέρει κάτι καλό

Έξαψη

In order to match the melody, the bolded syllables are emphasized. I could modify the rhythm slightly to emphasize the accented syllables like this:

Πάρε το ρίσκο

τι θα προσφέρει;

Ίσως φέρει κάτι καλό

Έξαψη

But it's not always possible and even here cannot be applied consistently. I'm not familiar enough with Greek language music to know when the singer is emphasizing an accent vs. when emphasis is for tone or to assist the melody. Here is a link to the original, and my full reinterpretation:

Πάρε το ρίσκο
τι θα προσφέρει;

Last name help

Hi I have been doing some investigation on my family and have come to the point of confusion after taking a dna test(Ik they are not perfect I was just curious) and while doing that I received numerous notification of having Turkish cousins. This led me here as my fathers father have a name from the Peloponnese but my grandmas does not appear to be from there even though see was raised there. We know little of what her birthday is but she was born in the 20s and have the last name Ligdis. A lot of my research has pointed me to Asia Minor but I’m having a difficult time with finding more so if you know where I can look or have insight it would be much appreciated!

How does the Greek word for "rabbit" translate to "half hare" in English?

I am reading Chloe Daltons book "Raising Hare", where at one point she ponders about the differences between rabbits and hares. She claims that the Greek word for "rabbit" translates to "half hare" in English, but since hare is λαγός and rabbit is κουνέλι, I cannot see the connection. Are there other words out there that I'm missing? Could someone explain this claim for me?

Should I use the upper dot (·) in Greek?

The upper dot (·), known in Greek as άνω τελεία, is a punctuation mark used in Greek the same way a semicolon (;) is used in English. However, just like the semicolon in English, the upper dot has become considerably rare to come by. Honestly I can't think of any case that a full stop (.) can't be a used in the place of the upper dot. I have a fear that by using the upper dot I will give the impression that I'm a "scholar wannabe" and that I "want to be different".

Is it just impossible to learn a language if you don't have people you can speak it with?

I've been trying to learn Greek for years at this point and even though I can understand something that is written if I have enough time to read through it I still cannot understand more than I'd say 20% of what I hear.

I feel like I've tried every method, every app, and every YouTube channel and I still feel like I don't have a functional grasp of the language.

I've been making a little progress by talking back and forth with chat GPT but it's limited in its responses so I can't practice as much as I'd like.

Even the super easy greek series on the easy Greek YouTube channel feels too fast for me to understand anything.

Is this all a common hurdle with language learning? How do I get over it if I don't know anyone that I can practice with?

I've heard that listening to content that you know about 70-80% of is the best way to learn but I can't find any content that is basic enough where that is the case for me.

For all the effort I've put into trying to learn I just feel stuck, directionless, and stupid.

What is Greek for "you are loved"?

I want to get an engraving of "you are loved" done for my partner. She's Greek, but I want to surprise her so I don't want to ask her. Also if there's maybe a more traditional phrase with a similar meaning that would be great!
