Thanks to the women in this sub for sharing your stories! You gave me the push I needed to get it done. I camped in one of the fields at my sister’s farm in middle Georgia, and while her house was a tenth of a mile away, it still felt like a comfortable start. I’m ready to try a state park next!

Question State Parks Similar to Black Rock Mountain?

Can anyone reccomend any parks similar to Black Rock where the campsites are up on the mountain? The wife and I visited earlier this year and absolutely loved hiking there and spending evenings in downtown Clayton, unfortunately the park is pretty booked up for our anniversary week we want to go

Wanting to get away with the kids here in a few weeks where would be the best place to do the above?

Edit I’ve been flamed in other socials because I know primitive and drive up are not the same I’d like to just escape with the kids that’s still easy to access 🙏

Question beginner winter camping locations

as someone who is familiar with camping in colder summers due to growing up in the north, im looking to experience winter camping in the mountains after the second week of december.

im open to any range of amenities and would like to be somewhere campfires are permitted. my activities during my trip would included but not be limited to hiking, reading, and painting (open to suggestions especially for novel activities available).

are there any state parks with plenty of hiking and scenic views youve been to? would love to hear of your experience, suggestions, and cherished moments !

31F Preferably would like to meet other female friends to go hiking on the weekends. Would be ideal to join a group, more the merrier. I like to go off the path and stop often to look at mushrooms, plants, animals and rocks. I enjoy taking photos of scenery as well, all apart of my enjoyment of the hike. If you're also a goblin that enjoys slowing down to take in the details and using nature to clear your mind, message me!

Question Hearthstone cabins and camping in Helen.

Has anyone ever stayed at Hearthstone cabins and campground in Helen? Been looking at it. It would be a great spot for what I’d like to do. It’s towards the Russell scenic hwy. Near enough to Helen and pretty cheap to stay. Unicoi is sold out for months. But some of the reviews aren’t the best. But thinking of a quick getaway for Octoberfest.

Question Bear Boxes?

I’m looking to come back to Cloudland canyon, black rock mountain, or Vogel state park in the early or late spring (March or late May). The walk in sites are the right kind of camping for me… however, I’m concerned about bear activity! Do the walk in sites at any of these parks have bear boxes? Is it a pain to take scented items/cookware/food to and from the site?

Aside from that, I’ve been to Cloudland and black rock mtn in the fall, but never in the spring and I’ve never been to Vogel. Is March or May a better time to camp in any of those spots, and any that is particularly worth visiting that time of year? I’ve only done limited hiking in the two I’ve seen, so there’s plenty more for me to explore.

Thanks all.

Trip Report Vogel State Park - August

Thanks to those who commented on my earlier post. The walk in sites are a very easy walk from the car - not any further than you would walk to the toilet at any campground. In fact, I walked past the car on the way to the toilet. AND... free, hot showers. This was a very pleasant surprise.

There was plenty of hiking with trailheads in the park - maybe 2 miles to the AT. The trails leaving from the park are easy to find but aren't so well marked - several of us missed the turnoff to Blood Mountain so you've got to pay attention during those 2 miles.

They had entertainment at the pavilion both weekend nights if you were so inclined.

While the sites aren't 100% private, I didn't feel that my neighbors were close enough to be uncomfortable.

There aren't any bear boxes or cables but I decided if a bear came into camp it would be like the old joke about outrunning the bear - I only have to outrun you, not the bear.

All in all a pleasant spot from which to do many miles of day hiking.

Question Need help finding a campsite

Hey, my friends and I are planning to camp in Georgia in December and need to find a suitable campsite. I've never camped in Georgia, so I'm not familiar with the regulations and locations. Right now, I am looking for a secluded site that's preferably along some kind of body of water or, at a minimum, just a beautiful place to camp and explore. The two non-negotiable things are that it needs to be accessible for smaller cars and very isolated from other people. If any of you can explain what camping here is like in December and any suggested areas to look at, I would really appreciate it!
