Hundreds disliked it, but I loved this Giallo. A huge tribute to Italian horror films.

I thought it was better than X, I like Maxxxine more and more upon rewatching. Not really a giallo though, there was too much hinting at the killer with it being a sequel to X

Many gialli have very obvious killers as well (by design), I don't think it disqualifies it.

A Fanatical Televangelist who wants to save his daughter who got lost in the world of "p0rn0graphy". To do this he had to kill everyone around him. And psychologically torture your daughter. I even found it interesting that his motivation was guided by religious fanaticism, but in the third act he is a coward while his followers are being killed by Maxine and the detectives the coward runs away. But he still kills the two detectives. These 2 detectives are certainly a tribute to the two from Tenebrae. If the Killer had more screen time, more deaths, and if the deaths weren't off-screen, the film would be much better.

I liked it a lot....but I feel my expectations may have been too high after absolutely loving X and Pearl. I did not find Maxxine "sleazy" enough.....wish it gone further in the exploitation theme. Also felt the whole father scenario weak....so I liked it but not as much.

Yes, the soundtrack and the ambience are the best things about the film, when people die, for example Leon and Labat when they die, as the film is dark you have to pause and pay close attention to the details and the blood. I think this film should have a rating of not recommended for children under 16. No +18. I also had high expectations, but when I rewatched it I felt like it was the first time. Yes, she was leaving the world of adult films to migrate to the world of horror films, although she had friends who still worked with 18+ content and her father. In fact. It didn't seem like whoever is behind that costume and who is killing hundreds of people in different ways would be that goofy in the reveal.

After watching a lot of DePalma, I think it is safe to say Ti West was trying to pay tribute to the style. I enjoyed the movie, but it is no where near the status of X and Pearl.

De Palma Pays Tribute to Alfred Hitchcock and Dario Argento.

5

u/trevordsnt 5d ago

He’s said that Argento isn’t an inspiration on him somehow. He vaguely remembers seeing Bird with the Crystal Plumage and that’s it

u/kirby_krackle_78 4d ago

Lol, he’s a filthy liar.

4

u/trevordsnt 4d ago

Entirely possible but he’s always been honest about his influences, would be weird to lie about this one

It is wild to me that both DePalma and Argento were making similar films across the bond. Maybe Hitchcock has a stronger influence than we know.

Dressed To Kill is such a masterpiece despite the outdated discourse about trans people. Maxxxine isn't AS good of course but it's a fun time.

I enjoyed it, but for me it’s the least of the trilogy

I didn't dislike it but wanted to like it more than I did, if that makes sense and found it the weakest of the trilogy overall.

I had a little better fun than X. My favorite of the Trilogy is Pearl.

Mine too actually, I find it the best of the trilogy. I only watched MaXXXine once and want to revisit it to see if I like it better second time round as I did appreciate the giallo overtones and sometimes I change my mind on repeat views.

I thought it had more De Palma influence and even films like Angel.

im in the minority of hugely preferring this one over both x and pearl, two films i do genuinely appreciate in many ways. i guess i just enjoy the viewing of this one the most.

I was hoping this would feel like a quality giallo inspired movie, but it fell short for me.

They should have gone harder into giallo elements of it and just done it 100% like that

True. I agree.

I liked it ☺️

Worst of the X trilogy and NOT a Giallo.

The video store scene was a love affair to Argento and I’m here for it. Great movie!

9

u/pumukidelfuturo 5d ago

that's not a giallo.

Giallo definition:

Giallo (Italian for "yellow") refers to a distinct Italian film genre, popular from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, that combines elements of the murder mystery, psychological thriller, and horror. It originated from Italian mystery novels with distinctive yellow covers and is characterized by stylish, often lurid visuals, experimental camera work, a suspenseful focus on murder, sometimes featuring a mysterious, black-gloved killer and a strong emphasis on atmosphere and soundtracks

Im with you as I didn't immediately see a Gialli influence in Maxxxine. People just love to throw their genre verbiage around to seem like pro film buffs. Lol

4

u/theseareorscrubs 5d ago

It's absolutely an homage to the entire genre.

1

u/Giallo-666-2026 5d ago

Why do you think that, friend?

5

u/UltramegaOKla 5d ago

I like it, least favorite of the three. I thought Pearl was amazing and X was a great slasher. I'm not sure I would call any of them a Giallo, but maybe thats just me.

-1

u/Giallo-666-2026 5d ago

Yes, Pearl is a Psychological Slasher and X is a Slasher with a P0rn Theme, since MaXXXine is a horror film with references and hints of Giallo.

5

u/UltramegaOKla 5d ago

Cool. I didn't get that from it but I'm glad you liked it. Its a good film.

I liked all of them maxxxine DEI the best of them !

I love Mia Goth & the trilogy. Didn’t love this one at first watch but my nerdy ass bought the books that were written after the movies. “Maxxxine” was my favorite book out of all of them, & rewatching it after the book definitely made me appreciate it and like it much more. I have a couple of critiques but it’s really the cops being the savior at the ending that i don’t like. everything else about the movie, i can get down with

2

u/Hollerra 4d ago

I loved Maxxine but it went a bit flat around the midpoint. Had very strong DePalma 'body double' vibes!

2

u/Afraid-Ad3889 4d ago

Loved it too!

2

u/Gamegenievintage 4d ago

Worst of the 3.

2

u/Rahikolnikov 3d ago

Weakest writing of trilogy. Fell flat in 2nd half.

2

u/IllogicalPenguin-142 4d ago

I’m pretty sure this was an homage to Angel, not gialli.

3

u/whatever_leg 4d ago

"Hundreds"? lol

I thought it was lame.

1

u/AlgoStar 3d ago

I like it (more than X but less than Pearl) but it’s not a giallo. It’s an 80’s sexploitation movie, like Angel.

1

u/KID_THUNDAH 3d ago

My favorite of the trilogy, loved it

1

u/Both-Information3308 3d ago

Not even close to giallo

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Wolf318 3d ago

Definitely has giallo influence but I was reminded of De Palma and Joe Dante in some scenes too

That tribute to Opera was neat

1

u/Fearless-Scallion498 3d ago

A Giallo. I never thought about it that way, but I guess you could say that.

1

u/fruedianflip 3d ago

Someone who gets it. I swear every "bad" movie nowadays is just a homage to a forgotten subgenre. For the record, this is my favourite of the genre because it's just so dripping in giallo and early 80s slashers

1

u/centhwevir1979 4d ago

lmao, it was way more than just hundreds of us. What a disappointing way to end the trilogy.
