Is Gintama really ending?!?!?11?!?
Yes.
What is Gintama? Gintama is a Shounen jump manga that was adapted into a TV anime series. The last Shonen Jump chapter is chapter 698. Chapters 699-701 will be the final 3 chapters and they will be featured in Jump GIGA instead of Shonen Jump due to Gorilla circumstances.

What is Gintama about?
Gintama is based on Feudal Japanese history with many characters based on (down to the very name) historical Japanese figures. The plot is loosely based on the Westernization of Japan (but this time with Aliens instead of Westerners, and accelerated tech boost in the Samurai era). The overall plot is amazing, but you really need to just go with the flow and not look for it. Though it does have action and drama (around 40% of the series), most of the series is an episodic comedy with amazing humor and parodies. The serious arcs have fantastic set pieces, art, narratives, and action to rival the best shonen.
It is mostly a comedy about 3 main characters. Gintoki Sakata (a war vet that currently does odd-jobs for money) is the central character with the side main characters being Kagura (an alien girl with belonging to the strongest race in the universe) and Shinpachi (a pair of glasses that has a human carrier). Together, they work alongside a cast of 20+ characters to solve random problems and get into goofy situations. Though it is mostly a comedy, the trio along with the other cast members do eventually participate in serious moments (which even involve some characters being killed). This is explained below.
What is the primary fanbase of Gintama? Is it actually popular?
Non-Gintama fans assume that most fans are male and enjoy it for the comedy. However, the truth is that most fans in Japan are female, and overall the split is about 50:50 Male to Female ratio. It is extremely popular in Japan, Europe, and Southeast/East Asia. Many female fans come for the hot male characters (I mean, look at them) and stay for the amazing series. There’s also a big Fujoshi audience. A Fujoshi is a woman that focuses on shipping the male characters together (yaoi style).
As a side note, I am a 100% straight males and the amount of male fan-service is great. The male fan-service better than most female fan-service in anime. I mean, look at this and also this ending
Does Gintama have a plot (and is it only comedy)?
There is a plot and no, it is not only comedy. The first 57 episodes (skip 1 and 2, they're filler) are character intros and world building. It is true that the first 57ish episodes are slow-paced/boring, but the payoff is extremely worth it. However, there are some that say the first 50 is just as good as the rest of the series. It's always subjective, so give it a shot. From episode 58 onwards, the series picks up and continues to get better with every passing episode (even until 300+).
The series structure can be broken down to roughly 70% comedy, 20% action, and 10% sadness/tragedy/feels. There are 4 types of episodes. Normal episodic ones, serious arcs, semi-serious arcs (usually featuring character development), and comedy arcs. Arcs vary from 2 to 9 episodes, so it is also very binge easy.
Episodes 58-61 is the first "serious" arc with actual plot. Most arcs are very short compared to other shounen (2-9 eps). The main story arcs (called serious arcs) are scattered throughout the anime. Most of the series is an episodic comedy, however. This is what makes the show special.
Gintama is regarded as the anime with the best comedy to drama transition. One episode you'll be laughing your ass off, the next you're going to be crying from the unexpected romance/drama/tragedy. It's because the comedy makes you think that nothing bad can never happen. Then BAM, an arc kills off a beloved main character.
Though the serious arcs are spread out, they all tie into the overarching plot of the entire series. Seeds of the end-game of Gintama (which is happening right now) start from the very first episode. You will not catch the subtle hints/foreshadowing without rewatching the series. Gintama at this point is in its final arc. The series right now is full of betrayal, death, violence, and tragedy. Treasure the happy comedy that is present at the beginning of the series.
I saw Barack Obama and other ridiculous things in some clips. Those have to be filler right? They aren't canon?
That's one of the beautiful parts of Gintama. 99% of it is canon. So yes, Barack Obama did show up in the series. Gintoki also grabbed onto penis-clams to find the one of a dead man. It's canon. Though there are some filler episodes, they are usually done so well that you don't realize it's filler. Except 1 and 2. Skip those horrible filler episodes. There are very few filler episodes.
Should I read the manga or watch the anime? How long is the series?
The manga is good, but I prefer anime. You can tell the VAs love their roles (whether they're making barfing sounds or making dramatic speeches full of emotion). However, the manga is good as well. 99% of the anime (it has very few fillers) is canon to the manga. The anime does skip some manga arcs though, so after you catch up in the anime you should research that. I will add them at a later time.
The argument for the manga is the art. Originally, the art for the series (both anime and manga) were very simple and weird imo. However, as the series goes along, the art significantly improves. The manga in particular is 100000x better.
Comparison: Here is a comparison between art styles of the anime and manga from how it used to be to how it is now.
Right now, the manga is in its final arc. The anime just aired the second to last arc of the series and the last arc is being animated. Episodes 300-326 are all plot heavy serious arcs, so make sure you don't look them unless you care about spoilers. There are about 700 chapters as of right now.
This series looks bad. When does it get HD?
The series first goes HD 16:9 on episode 202. They were one of the last adopters of HD, and the anime even references it. There are jokes by the cast about how every other anime is in HD but they're still in 4:3.
Should I look at the wiki to get more information about the show and characters?
Absolutely NOT. If you venture into the wiki/look up characters, you risk being spoiled. Since the plot is so spread out, getting spoiled for Gintama is MUCH worse than other anime. The actual plot for Gintama is present throughout the whole series, and you won't notice until the big reveals later that seeds are being planted for the finale as far back as episode 1. The "plot" is much more spread out than other shonen, separated by episodic comedy or comedy arcs.
What is the watch order of the series? How much of the manga is adapted?
HOW MANY CHAPTERS ARE ADAPTED INTO THE ANIME: 686 is the last adapted chapter for now.
Skip episodes 1 and 2 if you wish to. They were a special to celebrate the series getting animated.
1. Gintama: 3-201 (The arc at eps 58-61 was made into a movie. Watch it if you don't care about spoilers, instead of the the arc in the series.)
2. Gintama Movie 1: Benizakura (the Benizakura arc in eps 58-61). CANON MOVIE
3. Gintama'(2011): 202-252
4. Gintama' Enchousen: 253-265 (with some reruns in the middle)
5. Gintama Movie 2: Be Forever Yorozuya CANON MOVIE. This movie was made to signify the end of the series, as they didn't know if it would continue (but it did).
6. Gintama° (2015): 266-316
7. Gintama. (2017): 317-328
8. Gintama. "Porori": 329-342
9. Gintama. Silver Soul Arc: 343-355
10. Gintama. Silver Soul Arc Part 2 356-370
11. Gintama: THE FINAL (Along with 2 OVAs). This is the finale movie of the series.
11a. Chapters 686-698 are published in Shonen Jump and 699-701 are published in Jump GIGA. These are the final chapters of Gintama with the GIGA chapters being longer in length.
EDIT: Gintama End-Game starts at episode 300. Everything passed there is part of the "conclusion" of the series. Contains heavy spoilers.
Why are there so many series (and why do they take up most of the top 10 in MyAnimeList)?
The reason why there are so many series’ is because the Sunrise Studio decided to take breaks with the anime. The breaks last from a few months to a few years. They did this to allow the manga to catch up so they didn’t have to make a lot of filler or ruin the pacing (cough One Piece). This is why Gintama is split up on MyAnimeList. Each series has its own separate name, but it is all connected. Think of it like the difference between Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden. Except without time-skip.
It takes up most of MAL because most of the people that watch this series love it and rate it a 9 or 10/10.
How much of Gintama is officially translated and where can I watch/read it?
The entire anime series is translated and available on Crunchyroll/VRV. Gintama Movie 1: Benizakura is also available on Hulu. As for manga, only 26 volumes have been officially translated by Viz Media are they are available on Amazon.
You’re lying. Gintama doesn’t have a plot. Prove it.
Here is a list of the serious plot arcs. Feel free to look at them if you want. Don’t blame me when you’re spoiled about a major development or character death though.
Benizakura (Gintama Movie 1 or 58-61)
Mitsuba (86-87)
Shinsengumi Crisis (101-105)
Yoshiwara in Flames (139-146)
Red Spider (177-181)
Rokkaku (186-187, but not sure if it's serious enough)
Four Devas (210-215)
Thorny (244-247)
Courtesan of a Nation (257-261)
Reaper (279-281)
Kaientai (290-291)

Obviously Im a mega fan, and the fact that I cannot watch these films is lowering my morale. I dont see them in Crunchyroll, and the upcoming Yoshiwara in flames retelling looks FIRE AF
And, another question, Do the compilation films have anything new or are they reanimated too like the retellings? Or are they just literally the same episodes put together in 1 package? Prob a stupid question, and I think I already know the answer, but I want to be sure.
And obviously I would need english subs. Thanks yall.

After rewatching Be Forever Yorozuya and I want to know your head canons for who stopped by to visit Otae. Katsura and Sougo are obvious but what else do you see? I like to think that Sougo sees a lot of Mitsuba in her. And we don’t get much but there are bits of dialogue that supports Otae mingling with Katsura on a daily. So it was sweet to see he left a present. I can only image the conversations they had.
Now I see a red cap behind the box. That’s a mayonnaise bottle from Hijikata in my head.

Was hoping to get your guys' help finding a specific scene I'm remembering. I interpreted it as a Benkei-Ushiwakamaru/Battle at Gojo Bridge reference -- it was a guy playing a flute on a bridge and I think he had some kind of makeup/face paint on, and then someone else came onto the bridge and they started fighting. Given the reference I looked at the Benizakura arc because I figured maybe it was when he was going around as the tsujigiri, but I rewatched the episode it would probably be in and didn't see the scene. I'm like 90% sure it was in Gintama, but if it's not then....lol

So i was rewatching random Gintama episodes and stumbled upon ep 173. I know that it was anime original but i found the difference between similar situations really funny. Also Gin did eventually use "violence" against Sadaharu in his body (when Sachan got involved lol) to save himself from (another) indecent situation, but at least he managed to appreciate his own handsomness beforehand. With Hijikata, however, he went straight for the punch, his own body be damned lmao

Man.. never thought I'd enjoy this anime as much as I did, never even thought I'd ever finish it yet here I am, 2 OVAs and a movie away from completing the story.
Last time I posted I had just finished season 4.. boy was that a ride. Having finished the anime's original run now, a little look back on everything that's happened since then.
Starting with season 5 right after the astonishing arcs concluding S4 (SA & FS) I was scared going into season 5 cause I was fully convinced the comedy was over.. glad I was wrong, the Rakuyo battle arc started off hilarious. Umibozu being the big dog and main player for the first half of the season felt like a breath of fresh air, really took me out of the despair of wondering just how we're gonna deal with Usturo, forgot we have the strongest man in the universe on our side... but of course, little miss gimme attention (Kamui) wants extra beef on the side. Really loved the backstory though, Abuto being such a good big brother/dad figure to Kamui was unexpected though I guess he's always acted like that thinking back to it. Then Umibozu's backstory with Kouka was great, gave some much needed exposition on just why Kamui and Kagura are so freakishly strong even by Yato standards (Umibozu & Hosen the exception ofc), also side note KOUKA IS SO PRETTY HELLO ?
Kamui being a momma's boy.. lol, love that. The family fight that broke out between the 3 was heartbreaking but then Gintoki finally pulls up to the scene and BIG BROTHER ON BIG BROTHER VIOLENCE IS REAL (FINALLY I'VE WAITED FOR THIS FIGHT FOR SO LONG) and it didn't disappoint. Amazing fight, Gintoki being able to push Kamui so far that his Yato blood takes over is insane! And Abuto coming in clutch to snap him out of it and the final scene with Kamui laying peacefully on Kagura's lap ughhhh I love and hate this disfunctional family at the same time. Great end to the season.
Season 6.. slip arc.. caught me all the way off guard, I was like wait a minute did we go back in time what's going on?? Looked it up and it's all arcs that got skipped pre-season 4 so it made sense. Was happy to have funny arcs back again, Homeless arc especially was so good 😭😭 I'm so mad Zura won't go AND GET HIS GIRL ALREADY LIKE DAMN BRO. And idk it's name but the arc with Shinpachi's spirit seeing glasses.. took me all the way out 😭
NOW SEASON 7, SILVER SOUL STARTS AND... ?? um hello ? am I in the right place ? Feels like old gintama all over again with all the comedy bits in the midst of this serious situation 😭 I love it. THE REVELATIONS ABOUT UTSURO AND HIM BEING MULTIPLE PEOPLE ? SO SHOYO WAS REAL!! Makes it even sadder to think about.
Intermission! Nobunobu is in the middle of very serious negotiations with admiral Shijaku involving... Disembowelment..? iiya.. unko desu..
SHIJAKU IS AN ALLY ???? oh.. nvm they're all imprisoned together now.. great.. wait a minute.. this soundtrack.. surely it isn't.. PRINCE BAKA ??? WAIT IS THAT MFKING MADAO IN SPACE ??? HELLO ????? Shijaku being Hata's brother.. prince dragonia... ELIZABETH ????? 😭 I was crying so hard ts came outta nowhere and I love it!
oh boy Altana is acting up.. oh boy, space betrayal.. oh boy, Edo is setting up defenses.. oh boy, it's going down!
SEASON 8!
They got the 3 warrior races doing their biddings.. yikes! Wait a minute... Hedoro's people ?? Everybody's here! Loved how everyone had a role in this, Ougai is a monster plowing through everyone and everything.. until Hedoro pulls up and shows us the real demon 🤣 Gintoki messing with his flower head 😭😭😭 uh oh, space dudes are in trouble.. (FUCK ENSHO ALL MY HOMIES HATE ENSHO) anyway TAKASUGI PULLS UP YES YES YES YES YES!!! BANSAI'S DEAD ??? NO NO NO NO NO 😭😭😭 (RIP HE WAS ONE OF MY FAVS)
Kagura smells Yatos and runs off AND GETS SAVED BY KAMUI ??? OH SWEET BROTHER I'VE BEEN TOO HARSH ON YOU! I love his interactions with Gintoki (and Sogo wanting to finish their fight like bro fOCUS) UMIBOZU IS BACK!!!!! IMMEDIATE BEEF WITH KAMUI AND HE'S GOT THE SOLUTION TO UTSURO'S IMMORTALITY YES YES YES!!! HE USED IT TO GROW HIS FUCKIN HAIR NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!
Nobunobu is dead..? I mean.. I hated you but I guess you changed, he grew on me a bit but I can't ever forgive him for Shigeshige, but he earned my respect at the very end. RIP!
Utsuro pulls up.. finally, it's showtime! Everybody getting a lick at him, everybody!!! The fight was heavy.. and then Sadaharu.. SADAHARU 😭😭PLEASE ANYONE BUT OUR BABY PLEASE 😭😭 buuut he held the gates like the absolute DAWG he is but we still couldn't beat Utsuro.. he falls off (RIP ??)
MADAO THE ABSOLUTE MAD LAD SAVES THE EARTH!! EVERYONE IS SAFE YAY wait we're breaking up ?? Like a band ? Like the Beatles ? 😭
Timeskip!
Shinpachi glo'd up but he still ain't no Gintoki. Wait Kondo and Otae are eXPECTING-? oh false alarm. Wow Everyone's all grown now whAT THE FUCK HASEGAWA IS THE HERO ??? I mean..... yeah.. yeah he is. DONALD ZURAMP ???????????? 😭😭😭😭😭 KAGURA'S DAUGHTER ?????? Oh nvm.. oh Sogo's alive yay Wait where's my goat Yamazaki??? WHERE'S MY GOAT???? WTF YOU MEAN MOBOCOP??????? 😭😭 okay Gintoki's still the same, nice! Takasugi is immortal now.. yikes? They're after the same thing apparently wait UTSURO'S HEART? BABY UTSURO??? EXCUSE ME???
Ooooookay we're going back to Edo, save Shoyo's body, try not to rekindle with everyone that's waiting for us (totally won't put on a wig act like Takasugi and achieve post nut clarity 3 times in a row).
All that's left is the semi final and the final movie! I'm beyond excited to see how this concludes!!!!

(A poorly translated rant from one of the only Brazilian fans)
So, I started watching Gintama in 2018, when I moved from the countryside—where I had no friends—to the city... where I also had no friends (but at least there was wi-fi). At the time, I was going through almost every cliché (extreme shyness, lack of social skills, loneliness), so I started watching anime (Naruto, One Piece, the classics—dropped all of them though), including Gintama, which, being so long, I began watching little by little.
Because it’s so long, I took it slow. Over the years, it became my comfort show—whenever I felt down, I’d watch Gintama because I knew its humor would lift my spirits a bit, and even the more serious arcs were cool and ended well (in the sense that things would return to normal—man, I really value routine, a “normal,” some kind of resolution that doesn't totally disrupt the characters’ everyday lives. Like, if an important character dies or a beloved group disbands, it just destroys my mood).
But now... I’m scared. I’m heading into the final arc. I made it through the Shogun Assassination arc and the Farewell Shinsengumi arc (extremely devastated, but I survived), but now that I know it’s the end, and that the author isn’t exactly gentle with the fans’ feelings the way I’d like, I keep thinking: should I keep watching? Should I go all the way? Is it worth it?
I really want to finish the anime, but am I ready for it? Will it hurt too much? I’m already feeling fragile with my current personal situation, which dragged Gintama and prescription meds back into my life... can I even handle the end of Gintama right now?
Would it be a good idea to stop here for now, while I still can, and look for another anime to watch? Any suggestions, my friends? Normally, I’d just bury myself in BL manga, but my phone screen is fucked up (a green line right down the middle), and reading anything on it is hell.
On a scale from 1 to 10, how devastating is the ending of Gintama? (Please, no spoilers.) I feel like if it’s over a 5, I’ll need psychological help after watching it (which is super expensive where I live, and I’m unemployed—but actively job hunting; I refuse to stay unemployed much longer).
Is this one of those cases where I should just rip off the band-aid quickly to minimize the pain, or is this particular band-aid going to rip out my soul with it and leave a deeper wound? I can’t make up my mind—I’m scared.
And yeah, I know I need therapy more than anime, but listen: the minimum wage in Brazil is R$1,412, and a good therapist charges at least R$250 per session, and I’m not even earning minimum wage right now! I could look for free therapy, but the public service is awful. A friend of mine tried it and ended up seeing someone who believed aromatherapy could cure his suicidal thoughts (spoiler: it didn’t work, but he’s still alive—not thanks to aromatherapy).
Please, no spoilers—if you’re going to reply, don’t say anything about what happens in the story. Just tell me how you felt after finishing. Was it worth it? How long did it take for you to recover? Or am I just being overdramatic? I know I’m dramatic, but did I go too far this time?
No spoiler, please 🙏🙏

In Torrance at the Del Amo Fashion Center from September 6th to October 5th. I just wanted to share in case anyone is in the area and hasn’t seen the ad for it. The mall also has an Animate store. They haven’t shared what merch will be at the pop up yet but I assume tomorrow after it opens videos/photos will be shared. I was just glad to see Gintama included.

yo, does anyone have high quality cleaned manga covers ? looking for this one specifically
