Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know

What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?

Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.

Why Is This Happening?

  1. Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
  2. Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
  3. Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.

Can You Prevent This From Happening?

No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.

What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?

  1. Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
  2. Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
  3. Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
  4. Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  • Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.

While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.

What Is The Deadline For These Changes?

You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Additional Reading About The Changes:

Alternatives and Solutions

  1. Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
  2. Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Go to the Timeline section.
    • Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
  3. Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  4. Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

Discussion Political posts are currently not allowed

Governments have the authority to assign place names based on their own conventions, whether for domestic or international locations. These changes are reflected in mapping services, including Google Maps, which follows the naming policies of the country where the map is rendered. Google Maps itself does not make these decisions, but simply mirrors the official names as designated by the relevant authorities.

We understand that name changes like this can be sensitive, and we appreciate that people may have strong feelings about the matter. If you wish to provide feedback to Google regarding this change, you can do so at the following link:

Google Maps Feedback

All further posts that are politically motivated complaints will be removed. There are simply too many duplicate posts voicing the same issue. Leave feedback to Google at the link above, or ideally complain to your government representatives who are allowing these changes on your behalf.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Help/Support Timeline Data suddenly gone

Upvotes

I just noticed all my Timeline data from before a week or two ago is gone. I have no idea how this happened since I never touched it. The only thing I can think of is when I deleted Google Play Services data a few weeks ago. Would Maps data be stored there? Is there any way to recover it?

Help/Support Can't amend timeline visit

Hiya, wondering if anyone knew anything about this. For a while, when I'm at home, Maps/Timeline keeps reading my location as the bus stop opposite my house. In the past, I used to be able to edit my location to my home, occasionally I would get errors so would edit it on my laptop instead but can no longer do this with the new timeline style.

Recently, I either get "something went wrong" or pressing done does nothing at all.

I tried to reset my home location, but this actually made it worse, multiple home visits now read as a generic "Place visit" and trying to set these visits to my home results in no changes saving.

Location is turned on, app and phone are up to date, timeline permissions are fully enabled, tried restarting my phone, clearing the app cache and disabling and enabling the app. Samsung S22, if it makes any difference.

Thanks everyone! 🫶🏻

Help/Support How can I remove these strange busses which have appeared?

A few weeks ago these bus icons appeared on my maps app and I can't seem to figure out why, or how to remove them.

I made sure they are not coming from any of my lists.

Thanks for any ideas!

Timeline is so inaccurate now

With them moving the timeline to device only, and no longer supporting snap to road on device, my timeline for trips is 100% useless. It shows large sections where it is just drawing a straight line from A to B regardless of the route travelled.

Might as just turn off the location services and timeline altogether I guess.

Has anyone been able to find a fix for this?

TIA

Edit: I am on a Pixel 9 Pro, and yes everything is updated.

Timeline Timeline Not Loading Into New Device

Hello everyone,

Whenever I get a new phone, I make sure Google Maps has turned on timeline and backup and has loaded my previous history.

On the new device (samsung Fold 7), I tap timeline, then cloud. Backup is enabled. The device itself (new one) is saved. I can even see the old device backup.

Fortunately I still have my old device that I carry with me the whole time. (Till i finish transitioning to the new device).

But my timeline remains empty. I cleared cache and data. Imported timeline. I get the message that all data has been successfully imported bit my timeline remains empty. I've tried restarting the device. Turning on and off timeline. Nothing is bringing back my old data. In spite of it continuing to record movement via my old device - which is good. At least it's continuing to record.

When I go to Location (in phone settings), then Location Services, then Timeline, then I select my account. I can see that something has been imported because it says "40339 visits and routes saved on this device since 2017".

How do i import it over to see in timeline? Tapping import 500 times did nothing :)

Thanks.

Help/Support Mobile App now required for directions

Google Maps is a piece of shit and has been trying to get me to download their stupid app years, even redirecting me to the App Store when I hit the directions button.

Now, to even see the directions, you have to download their horseshit. Even just clicking on the search bar will take you to the App Store.

Fuck you Google, if anyone has a work around let me know!

Help/Support Maps Not Showing Potential Train Line Transfers

For reference I’m currently in Singapore and every time I try to map out a destination starting from my closest MRT station, Maps will plot out a route on one line to a station and then suggest I get out and walk to the destination even though I know there are possible transfers to take a different train line to a closer station.

To use specifics for anyone familiar with Singapore I’m close to the Farrer Park station; last night coming from Bayside, Maps suggested getting out at Little India and walking the 15-20 minutes or so to my hotel, even though I could just get on a different line and and Farrer Park would just be one more stop. I’m glad I thought to look at the train map. Mildly annoying since I shelved some plans yesterday because I thought it would too much of a hassle to get to the destination.

Not sure if it’s something in my settings or what.

Why does Maps keep sending me to another address across town that I have never been to?

My car display is Google Maps/GPS. I keep getting a home address on my display that somehow got saved in my maps. First, I have never looked up that address anywhere —phone, home PC, car, etc. My account isn't shared with anyone in my home. The house is probably worth 5 million or so. I am not that wealthy. I haven't looked up that home yet because I don't want to confirm it. This is so odd, and it is across town. The population is 400,000.

Why Are Obviously Legitimate Map Corrections Rejected?

Back in January, I submitted a name correction for this cemetery in my town, from the ridiculous name of "The other Alpharetta cemetery" to the legitimate name of "Resthaven Cemetery." The name can even be seen on Street View.

It'd slipped my mind I submitted the change until I noticed the name hadn't changed on the map. When looking at my list of submissions, I saw that it'd been rejected.

Why does Google reject obviously legitimate map corrections?

Someone posted my family’s farm on Google maps as a public park and garden. How do I remove it?

Someone decided to add my family’s farm as a public park and garden on Google maps for some reason. Do anyone have any suggestions on how to get Google to take it off the map, not just change it to “permanently closed”?

Any idea what happened and how to fix it?

The online advice is not helpful (phone settings not present).

Help/Support Restaurants – reservation button missing on one account but not on another

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to make a reservation through Google Maps, but the “Reserve a table” button is missing for me.

Here’s the strange part: if I switch to a different Google account on the same device, the button appears normally (obviously trying with the same restaurant)

Has anyone else run into this issue?

Any tips, fixes, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

My reviews remain pending

I have published almost 50 reviews on google maps till now. But for the last 2 places I have added, the photos have a ⚠️ sign next to them and the review itself is pending.

The only change is that I polished and adjusted my pictures with a really simple ios effect. Could it be the reason?

The error just says “we just know that there is an error, that’s all we know”.

Google Maps on the iPhone - two issues / questions

I like GM but have two issues on the iPhone, perhaps there’s a solution?

1) This is the worst one - when I start from an off-road location, e.g. a gas station or a parking lot, GM gets confused with which way my car faces. Apple Maps needs just a few yards of travel to figure out the car orientation, but GM seems to need a lot more. So I would drive up to the exit of the gas station / hotel lot and need to fake a turn and I don’t know which way to go because the car icon is spinning or the orientation is clearly wrong but I’m in an unfamiliar area and have no idea what is what. Sometimes, it even starts to spin or change orientation when I stop at a light, without car changing direction or moving. This is very annoying and at times caused me to take a wrong turn.

2) How do I see the list of stops in CarPlay without having to pick up the phone?

TIA

How to remove "Click on stations for more information"?

If I turn on the Transit Layer, a large box sits in the middle of the screen with the words "Click on stations for more information".

How can I get this off of my screen, but without turning off the Transit Layer?

I'm using a Chromebook.

I would love to post a screenshot, but that is not possible in this subreddit, alas. Oh, I get it: I need to use a comment to post an image. OK...

My business has higher reviews and ratings but is not ranking on top in Google Maps search

Hello Google Maps Community, I manage a business profile on Google Maps (Pashm Home – Handicraft Store, Srinagar) https://maps.app.goo.gl/5opQhxo3pXXBK1dN8?g_st=ipc Our store has 198 reviews with a 4.9-star rating, which is more than most of our competitors in the same category.

However, when people search for “handicraft store near me”, our business does not appear at the top of the results, even though other stores with fewer reviews and lower ratings do.

Could you please help me understand why this is happening, and what steps I can take to improve the visibility and ranking of my business?

Thank you for your guidance.
