Concord Grape Vine Issues

Hey everyone! I’ve planted this concord seedless grapevine earlier this year and struggling to figure out what it needs. I’ve fertilized it with Dr Earths organic granular fertilizer but that’s only 2-2-2 and I used about a cup worth in the deep hole I planted it in. I’ve been spraying it every other week with neem oil too. Is it a fungal issue or nutrient deficiency?

Ancient way of growing grapes. This is a Boskoop Glorie vine (2nd year) in our oak tree. Any (pruning) remarks are welcome.

Issues Concerning Spotted Leaves & Fallen Tendrils

Hey y'all,

I'm hoping this is the right sub to post in. I'm kind of concerned about my baby grape vine. It's a Catawba grape that I got from a nursery as, I believe, a cutting. Im treating the plant as if it were developing first-year grape vine that I'm planning to train into a double cordon system. But along the way, i noticed that the vine was having quite a bit of trouble sticking onto the vertical support thing. The newer tendrils of the stem i was planning to be the central stem of the plant dried out and fell off (Circled in Image 2). There are also some small black dots on some of the leaves that I'm worried are black rot, but they've been there for a bit (Image 4).

Thank you

PS. Zone 9a in Central Texas

Grew this main trunk, do I remove the shoots?

Sorry if some of the names are wrong! Couldn’t figure out the names if you only have a main trunk with spurs.

I grew the main trunk of my vine this year, topped it a few weeks ago a few nodes after where I want the top shoot each year.

I haven’t removed the shoot that sits right where I want it shoot from in the spring, however I am unsure if I should remove it, as it seems like after I topped it, it is now directing all energy to that shoot.

I am unsure if that will just be wasted energy as we are moving into fall now and I am unsure if that shoot will be able to get thick and lignify before frost?

At this point I am inclined to just cut off all the side shoots and force it to direct energy into build a strong main trunk?

Looking for a plan to save this blighted grape trellis

Just bought this place and I inherited a couple massive grapevines. They've fully taken over the bottom 2/3rds of those trees next to them, and some of the trees seem to be dying/covered in lichen (possibly as a result?). I was excited for grapes until the blight showed itself. They started getting ringed spots in early summer, and now most of them have withered on the vine, as seen in image 5. My light research is suggesting a fungal infection called Black Rot, probably caused by a wet spring and the microclimate happening in the trees.

  1. Can anyone confirm this?

  2. How far can I cut back without killing the vines? The blight has taken the entire crop, even on the original (falling apart) metal trellis. Can I take everything down the the main trunk and have it survive?

  3. How do I get the mummified grapes out of the grass? My research said the spores overwinter in them, and start the cycle again next spring. They're tiny and I don't know if a Rake will get them all, and they grow as high as 30ft into the trees so I can't pick them off the vine.

  4. My research was suggesting late winter/early spring for the trim, so that the vines will come out of dormancy and immediately start growing new shoots. Does that sound right?

  5. I should probably get them away from the trees to prevent this from happening again. I was hoping to retrain the vines onto a new trellis system that goes out and over the walkway in Image 3, kind of making a living arch. Does this seem feasible? If so, how many years should I expect that to take?

  6. If it re-emerges next year, how do I handle it?

  7. Just a curiosity, any idea how old the plant is? Based on the size, age of the house, rust on the trellis, and culture of backyard table grapes, it could date all the way back to the 40's, but I have no clue.

Thank you all so much for the help! I love this plant, it's clearly older than me, and I don't want to uproot it if I don't have to 💜

Hi, I am trying to establish a new grape in my pergola and saw my slightly older leaves having this issue, could some one suggest what herbicide or spray I might need to fix this? Also do I need any fertilizer? I am growing this in a pot.

How many grape varieties do I have?

Salt Lake City, Utah area. Just bought this house and can't ask the previous owners. I have 4 stalks (?). I'm wondering if they aren't all the same grape variety. The small purple ones taste like Concords, but I'm a complete novice so idk. I threw mesh bags on the biggest bunches a few weeks ago, but they aren't progressing to the same shade of purple as the small bunches. I've tasted the dark purple, the pinkish, and some bigger green ones, and none tasted too tart. So I wonder if I have 3 varieties. Can y'all identify them from the leaves? I can also go take more pictures if I know what to look for.

I planted a grape that makes super small grapes. They are almost the size of a regular grape size. Fortunately they are seedless

New to this. What am I seeing here? These vines have been around for years but I'm new-ish to the house and this is the first time I've really cared for/about the. Not all but many of the grapes have these spots. Are they edible or does this ruin the whole bunch?

Hi guys, any idea what type of grape has this kind of leaves? My parents were given it as a “prestige” variety, but now they are wondering if it’s a wild grape?

Grapes in Containers (15 Gallon Nursery Pots)

I have recently (last fall) picked up a few varieties of grape (Suffolk, Niagra, Catawba, Marquis White) that I wanted to try out in our yard. Due to the potential for an upcoming move in the next few years, the grapes and all of my other fruit trees are being grown in containers/pots (5 gallon to 25 gallon). Most of the fruiting trees are no big issue and get pruned appropriately for the tree or bush.

Then I come to my grapes which are currently in 15 gallon Nursery pots.

Initially I was planning on doing a in pot trellis approximately 5ft tall with 2 - 8ft cross rails for a Kniffen 4 arm style of training/pruning. Unfortunately, after only 1 year my 2 oldest grapes have gotten large enough (combined with mistakenly using wood stakes as the verticals which are rotting after 1 year) to make the trellis unstable. And I can see how this will end up being insufficient as the vines get bigger. Since I have to replace the vertical stakes of the trellis I am wondering if there is a better way to train/prune the vines that would work better in a Container/pot growing scenario.

I do like the way the Kniffen system allows for a decent spread and airflow for the vines but was wondering if a Head Training/pruning method might be better for my scenario.

I am also considering making new stands (24x24 pallet style base/stand out of composite decking so they dont rot) that the pots will sit on that could have a more substantial trellis built in but want to make a decision on training the vines prior to building anything.

I also dealt with my 2 newest vines getting hit with black rot this year. I cut all the infected parts off, bagged them for trash, copper sprayed and seems to have caught it before anything bad happened. I did loose all of the grow from spring thru beginning of August but they are both throwing out new grow now that does not seem to be affected by the Black rot.

Any suggestions or recommendations on which way might work better in this scenario?

Thank you.

Recently repotted this plant into a huge pot because I was told online that way the way. Now my moister meter reads almost 100% every day. Did I repot it too fast?

I found these grapes at a park! I have heard that you can make stuffed grape leaves, but I have no idea if all grape leaves are safe...do you think they would be okay to eat? I live in Washington state, zone 8b.

This is my first visit, but I'm hoping someone can help. It appears that one of my vines has been attacked by some kind of disease. I'm a novice with grapes and I'm not sure what to do. Is it some kind of fungus or something else? I would hate to lose the plant. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
