I like the deeper roster in FMA:B, but the character work for the Homunculi in 2003 is excellent and makes them all tragic beings versus homicidal weapons.
I would argue that they're still somewhat tragic, it's just that they all have the shared tragedy of having been created by Father solely for his own purposes, and not allowed to be their own people. It's clear from how Greed develops that the homunculi are people, just like anybody else, just with different origins, and the hopeful ending that Selim gets is another nod toward the idea that if it weren't for Father's influence they likely would have turned out differently.
