I'm rereading "The sum of their parts" and it's fun stumbling across fanfic trends that were in fashion when I first started reading fanfic but I don't see in recent fics.

Like firewhisky having actual flames and a pub in knockturn called "The White Wyvern"

I know that Blaise used to be Draco's ride or die before Theo gained popularity.

And that before that, Blaise was a girl. That Drinny used to be big, and the 2x2 pairs of Hermione, Ginny, Luna with Theo, Draco and Blaise in various combinations.

What old school fanfic trends do you remember or have stumbled across.

House elves are probably problematic... unless their origins provide a good explanation for the existence of a race that enjoys slavery. Are they the descendants of wizards who suffered from a hereditary curse? Abused brownies who developed something like Stockholm Syndrome? Or were goblins separated into two groups by their level of defiance/independence until they accidentally bred two groups, goblins and house elves?

Okay, that last one is still a bit problematic, but you get my point: I want fanfics that explore possible origins of house elves as willing slaves. And I want to see what the house elves would do if they were all cured. Avenge themselves on wizardkind? Negotiate new contracts? Set up a parallel society? What's Hermione doing about it all?

Someone must have written fanfics like this. Please tell me about them!

The author said that the history of humanity is identical, so it would not make sense for countries like the United States or the Soviet Union not to try to artificially replicate wizards. After all, genetic research was everywhere in the 80s with several scholars like Lisenco at its peak. Furthermore, during this same period, several projects that studied the paranormal and its possible military applications existed, such as the Stargate project(The real American government project that aimed to give people psychic powers,The name later inspired the TV series).

In December of 2024 I picked up the books for the second time after my first read through of them around 6 years ago, and flew through all 7 of them in around 2 weeks. After closing DH I felt quite upset that I had nothing else to read that would let me stay with these characters and just moved on a read something else. 2 Weeks ago I picked up Philosopher’s stone again and thought to myself that since I’m not busy until Uni starts again in October I’ll give the series another go. I was just as invested as before and even came to appreciate characters that never really interested me in previous read throughs, Ginny being the character that stood out to me the list this time around and it solidly puts her in my top 3. But I have just closed DH again and feel that same sadness that I have to leave the characters behind again, I want to see how Ginny reacts to Harry going to the forest knowing he was about to die without saying anything to her and i’d especially like to see story encompassing Ginny and Hermione’s final year at Hogwarts and Harry and Ron’s Auror training. I just feel that I need to stay with these characters and would love some recommendations of fanfics that Align with the book canon and continue immediately after the war, a bit of Harry/Ginny content would be brilliant too

I'm writing a fic in the marauder era but not explicitly focused on the Marauders, anyone have any suggestions on how to write this time period differently from Harry's time at Hogwarts?

There was this fic compilation by Rorschach Blot I think that had one ficlet where muggleborn people losing jobs to purebloods. Their reasoning is that the muggleborns could get jobs in the muggle world while the purebloods only have the wizarding world. Any more fics that explore this?

I've started writing two fanfics, but I need to double down on one and postpone the other. Im excited about both ideas, but I want to see which one resonates more before I dump even more time into them. I'm not a fan of people posting one chapter a month, or of abandoning works. I know the idea is less important than the execution, but I want to see which one you'd be more excited to follow before I fully commit. Please let me know which one you think I should focus on. Option 1: Harry Potter and the Acromantula of the Macroverse: A rewrite of Order of the Pheonix, but it's a Pennywise crossover. Basically, a butthurt Wormtail who doesn't know if he can serve Voldy anymore makes a plan to bring one of Pennywise's eggs to Hogwarts after hearing about the giant sentient spider from none other than Arogog. Pennywise loves prey with imagination, and magicals inherently have a more belief in the fantastical, making them so much tastier.

Option 2: Dudley, Do Right - When Voldemort's curse backfires on baby Harry, squibs mysteriously start performing accidental magic, leading to two theories, leading some to wonder if he became so powerful by syphoning magic. One of those squibs who starts performing magic is Dudley. Before he's sent to Hogwarts, though, he's put under an imperious curse to always do right by Harry. Leading him to become Harry's unwavering protector, even if it causes more harm than good. In addition to a Dudley growth and redemption arc, this will also focus more on world building between political factions that either think Voldemort stole magic, or that squibs weakened pureblood magic after the dark lord's death, as well as how to deal with a bunch of adults who are suddenly part of the wizarding community.

Option 3: Go home, nobody wants this.

I remember reading a fic a few years back and it's driving me nuts not being able to find it now.

What I remember:

• Powerful adult Harry.
• Somehow gets stranded in the past and in a different universe where Tom Riddle didn't become Voldemort and he had a son who married Bellatrix and had a daughter with her.
• Said daughter is a Hogwarts student.
• Harry saves said Daughter from a group of wizards that tried to kidnap her when she snuck away from Hogwarts.
• There's an unnamed dark lord (not Voldemort) and the big mystery of the fic is who it might be.

This is old ( written before HBP) but gold. Crack fic at its best. Gloriously written, hilarious. And it's really short so you don't feel sluggish.

This is also an excellent satire of the forced marriage trope.

The fic consists of Draco getting bit by Fenrir Greyback around the end of 5th year while in the forest. He was then found by Remus and Sirius (who is miraculously alive) and getting basically taken care of and guided through his whole lycanthropy issue. Important to note that werewolves in this AU turned into actual wolves. There was also this Veela OC that was roommates with Draco- and also the important fact that Regulus Black is also alive in the fic. The drarry was like really slowburn and they weren’t together yet by the end of it, but it did end like right in the start of the horocrux hunt. If I remember correctly, the fic used to be part of an ao3 series, which was incomplete. I’m going mildly insane trying to find it, it’s almost as if it never existed.

I hope to find some Voldemort/Tom Riddle fics like Ouroboros.Voldemort, a time traveler, adopted his past self in order to change the future.

Anyone know what's happened he's deleted all of his fanfics as of 2 days ago. He also made a post on his website saying goodbye (https://aci100.com) mildly concerning. Ron has self-esteem issues that stem from being the youngest Weasley brother. Ginny is also the baby of the family, and its only girl. So, what if Ron was the adopted Weasley?

On one hand, Ron can stand out from his siblings by being the adopted one; he was chosen by his parents, not that the others are less loved. On the other hand, Ron is also the adopted one; although blood isn't everything, this can be harder to emotionally process. Would an adopted Ron feel an even greater need to prove himself?

So, I remember scene from 3rd book/film in the Hogwarts express. The dementor there opened a door by hand. Also I cant find anywhere that dementors are intangible/incorporeal.
Hence, you can punch him. I dont think it will do any damage and it will lead to fast death. But...

Basically the piece I remember was that there was a needed ritual to start actually using runes. MC and the runes professor end up doing it after a significant amount of magical control is demonstrated. Was either on webnovel or fanfic I don’t remember.

I have like- the most basic of premises down. I know I want Harry away from the dursleys by six, which I've already written. But I can't decide which way I want to go with him from there.

Currently I've got two vague ideas.

One, Harry, after being kicked out of the dursley house half dead spends the next five years lost in the woods surviving with only vague instinct and his oddly strong magic. Think like the ancient magic from legacy, but not quite, lol.

Or two, Harry, again half dead and left entirely alone, is found by the ministry after a massive burst of accidental magic, and ends up with the Malfoys, as Lucius is both rich enough and charismatic enough to convince fudge it's the correct decision for the food of the wizarding world.

I think I'm going to write both eventually, but I'm stuck on which to start with. Both intrigue me.
