Discussion Does switching shampoos cause significant hairfall ?

TLDR ; Swithced shampoo and saw significant amount of hair falling out

So basically I been using the Grafen Root Booster shampoo for a few months but ran out so in the meantime while waiting for a sale I went back to my previous shampoo (Pantene hairloss shampoo) while waiting. When I purchased and switched back to Grafen Root Booster, quite a decent amount of hair fell out, way more than the usual. Is this a normal occurence ?

  1. It seems to be common enough to be a reccomended search on google
  2. I hadn't shampooed the previous day so maybe there was abit more buildup of hair ready to fall out
  3. It's a shampoo I have used before, so unless a change in formula, I doubt it's the shampoo itself.

It's pretty rare for a shampoo to cause significant hairfall. The only situation in which it would do that is if the shampoo has an ingredient that irritates your scalp or that you might be allergic to. People can develop allergies that they didn't have before, their scalp can become more sensitive and easily irritated by things that were fine to use before, and products do change their formula periodically; it might not be something that you can tell from the INCI list either. Those sensitivities would be unique to you though, not something that affects everyone who uses it.

The fact that it's a recommended search on Google doesn't mean much about that product. People have various scalp issues or may experience hair fall for another reason and blame their shampoo. If you ask the same question in Google with any other shampoo name, you will see that people have been asking about that one as well.

It is a common occurrence for the hairs that are shed each day to stay nestled amongst the other hairs on your head and not fall out until you next wash it or brush it, so skipping a day or more between washes will make it seem like more hair has fallen because you'll see 2 days' worth of shed hair fall out at once, which can be alarming and make it seem like you're losing more hair than your normal rate but it's not excess shedding, just your normal rate. Try keeping your shampooing schedule quite regular and save the hair that has collected in the drain catcher to compare each time and see if the amount of hair is about the same each time, that can help you gage whether your hair fall rate has changed.

It sounds like you are already dealing with some hair fall if you are using anti-hairfall shampoos, so perhaps the reaction is related to whatever is causing your hairfall in the first place? I'm not a doctor and this sub isn't really meant for medical advice, but hair loss is definitely a medical issue and it's worth seeing a doctor about.
