It's time for your weekly ask a a spinner thread! Got any questions that you just haven't remembered to ask? Or that don't seem too trivial for their own post? Ask them here, and let's chat!
Singles spun on my EEW 5.2, plied on my Louet S-10. Fiber was a 3.8 oz batt from Spotted Circus. Merino and sparkles mix. I haven’t blocked it yet in this pic, so it should relax a bit more in the hank after I do.
I recently acquired a carder and it’s made such a difference. First pass of Ryland, Alpaca and Merino in autumn colours in preparation for weaving a blanket.
I went to the thrift store today and found this nifty little cup that’s perfect for my support spindle. I usually sit cross legged and it rests perfectly on my ankle. Lots more comfortable than the saucer I was using before
600 yards of Nube spun on my Country Craftsman and 4oz of unknown final length polwarth from my Golding spindles, a braid from Friends in Fiber. The latter will be socks. The Nube I have tons more to spin before it decides what to be. It’s lusciously soft even at my preferred high twist. But I don’t know when I will get to it as my semester starts Wednesday and I have never less looked forward to the beginning of the school year.
I have a lovey fleece in soak and want to put it out on my drying rack in the garden. I’m due to be away for two weeks. If it rains will the fleece felt or will it be ok. ?
My sister was cruising the aisles of a local Goodwill and found two bags of jumbo bobbins for at least three different wheels. (None of the wheels were in sight, and no one working knew anything about either spinning wheels or e-wheels. I've been back twice to ask different managers, and they both just shrugged and said if something "nice like a spinning wheel' had shown up, it would probably be auctioned off. So far nothing has popped up on their auction site.)
Ravelry was able to identify one set, but these two are still unidentified. Can you ID them? Thanks for any help!!
Bobbin 1, I have eight of these bobbins
Bobbin 2, I have 3 of these.
Also in the bags were 3 jumbo and 2 normal sized bobbins for an Ertoel Roberta, which just breaks my heart where it could be without its bobbins. What could have happened to it, no one could tell me. :(
If you find yourself in Spokane, Wa I highly recommend stopping in to Paradise fibers. It was lovely to actually put my hands on things to actually feel the fibers and see the colors in person, rather than online. I had to pace myself, but I got some gorgeous tussah in a “ tea infusion” color way.
I know the wheels are very popular, but what does everyone think of the fibre you can buy? I have been personally enjoying the merino and silk blend I have from them (very nice long fibres) but wanted to see others opinions since I am very beginner. Also if anyone has and brand or sourcing suggestions, would be very happy to hear them! I'm in Australia and work on a drop spindle.
Fresh off the needles my Ozetta Lakes Pullover mafe with handspun yarn. I am so happy, it fits like a dream. I've knit this in less than a months time.
Italian bind-off took ages but is totally worth it.
The Nube Diana was my main Tour de Fleece project and I am very satisfied to see it in a sweater. Have a lot of leftovers and plan to make some mittens with what's left.
I am getting ready to skirt some alpaca fleece, and I’m wondering if using combs to break up the dirty tips will damage the fiber. I have a ton of the fleece, so I don’t want to wash it before I send it to the mill. I just want to clean it up a bit. If combs are ok, any advice on cheap ones?
My husband purchased a drop spindle for me because I’m thrilled to learn the step before crocheting with the yarn. But all I have is yarn scraps and rolls of yarn that I could ruin to try to learn to spin. Help me? What should I do? I want so bad to learn to use my spindle and I want to use the wool but I don’t have any in hand.
Didn't expect to find a semi-local farmer with sheep and alpacas selling the (unprocessed) fiber but here we go! This will keep me busy the rest of the year, I reckon.
Green is self dyed Yak wool spun up 2 ply, blue is ExpressionFiberArts superwash merino in i think the color Storm (limited release) blended on a board with pearl and stellina fibers in 2 ply as well. The yak is a bit thicker and plusher and so wonderful for sensitive skin imo.
Superwash merino is nice but I think I enjoyed spinning the yak more, even if I had to treadle like a crazed woman to get enough twist (finally got a faster whorl thank gods). Took ages before I found the right pattern for these two spins. Settled on Kola Street by ExpressionFiberArts, I really think I found a winner lol.
Earlier this year, I decided that I wanted to try my hand at actually processing raw wool. I didn't want a whole fleece, I just wanted a small amount to see if I even enjoyed it. I ordered a couple of pounds of 2 different types of wool from a mill. One of them I didn't really enjoy, so I didn't wash more than a few handfuls and I left the rest in the plastic bag it came in and stored it in a plastic bin/tote in my garage. I assumed it would be safe until I figured out what I wanted to do with it.
Today, my mother was looking through some bins in the garage and opened the one with the wool in it. She said it was "infested with bugs" which, after a little questioning, I'm assuming is moths. She said she opened the bin and immediately shut it when seeing the bugs. That was 4 hours ago and I still don't want to go look. I'm debating on just chucking the whole thing, bin and all or putting it in a garbage bag in the sun for a few days to salvage the bin. I'm assuming that the wool is ruined by the amount of "bugs" she's describing. I'm imagining generations of moths feasting and reproducing on this wool. Send me good thoughts and well wishes as I find the courage to deal with this!
I have decided I don't like my current top whorl drop spindles for plying and am planning on turning a new one.
Other than a larger whorl diametre (which is my main complaint since I tend to spin larger amounts of wool and it it always slipping at the end) what are some other features that you find helpful? For example, do you prefer rim weighted? A long spindle stick? I am curious to know if there are things I haven't thought of yet.
I am planning on doing it out of walnut and cherry like one of the other spindles I turned. Pictures of it for spindle tax :D
