Question how do you make larger skeins of yarn with a drop spindle?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I started spinning recently on a small drop spindle and I wanted to ask how/when do you attach the shorter pieces of yarn together to make a larger skein?

What I've been doing so far is: I spin a single, until the cop gets too heavy/big to fit comfortably on my drop spindle. Then I spin another separate spindle full of yarn. Then I ply the 2 singles together. (Or, alternatively, if I just have one length of yarn, I ply it with itself by holding both ends together).

I tried to attach my singles to each other by taking the end that's attached to the spindle and spinning it with the end from the other single (kind of like how you join in new fiber) but I was having some trouble. So I just wanted to check how other people are doing it, thank you if you respond!

Question Help identify my wheel!

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

I found this in a council cleanup in Wollstonecraft (Sydney, Australia) but i have no idea who made this or when! I would really love to know a rough year of production.

The first two pics are of my wheel - the lighter coloured wood was broken on the original so they’ve been replaced, but everything else was sitting with the wheel.

The next lot of pics are from this website: http://australianspinningwheels.blogspot.com/p/mystery-wheels-and-unknown-makers.html?m=1 but unfortunately theirs is unidentified too!

I’ve emailed them pics of mine in hopes of finding out some more info, but hopefully someone here knows a little more!

Work In Progress Still in search of a sweater pattern.

I'm a little over halfway done plying the corriedale I started during TDF, which is a light fingering weight and should come out to at least 1600 yards. I want to make a cabled and/or otherwise intricate sweater with it, and I've been adding things to my Ravelry favorites, but I thought I would post here and ask if anyone has any suggestions.

Question Scurf or dandruff?

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

I recently was gifted a few fleeces from a local farmer so this is kind of a challenging mystery fleece! I have just finished rinsing and scouring (I scoured twice as it was v lanolin rich) this fleece and I thought while skirting this was lanolin deposits because it had a yellow colour. However it now looks like scurf or dandruff.

I don't much experience with either and was wondering if anyone knows what it is/ if there is anything I can do with it? Looking down this reddit some people are saying it's fine to spin with but messy, while others say it isn't suitable for spinning?

This fleece is really beautiful and the fibres wonderful so I would really love to find a solution if possible!

Question Can anyone recommend books about spinning that are NOT how-to or reference books?

Cannot get enough of books on textiles and their history and cultural significance.

So far I have read:

Women’s Work: The First 20,000 Years: Women, Cloth, and Society in Early Times by Elizabeth Wayland Barber

The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World by Virginia Postrel

The Golden Thread: How Fabric Changed History by Kassie St. Clair

Since I’ve recently picked up spinning, I would love to read a book that focuses on spinning, its history, how it influenced culture, the economy, and the development of technology over time and in different regions, etc.

Especially a book that discusses different tools (spindles, wheels, cards, combs, swifts, dizzes, etc etc) and their histories and development and uses in different regions. And maybe different fibres! I wouldn’t be too mad if the book also included weaving since the two are so intertwined.

Also super down for a novel that heavily features spinning! Bonus if audiobook so I can listen and spin!

Made with Handspun handspun knit necktie (^ω^)

i made this yarn a few months ago, i wanted to knit a vest, it looked awful and had a horrible fit , soo i opened it and it was laying around since then. my bf asked me to make him a necktie and since then i couldn’t stop knitting them and thinking of new ways to experiment with them. (personally i really like wearing funky neckties and to make and design them myself is v cool).

yay enjoy! it looks wonky and is also (not yet) blocked, i already love it like this especially with the imperfect structure c: hope you enjoy it too also i added the red one which is handspun too, it’s kind of a tweed look i was going for. c:

Gear Three new petite spinning spindles for my tree decorating project

I’m in the process of decorating a slim tabletop tree with weaving and spinning decorations. I added three wood worked spindles from ScottsMountainCrafts on Etsy this week and am delighted with the size and quality of them.

I had already made a few working mini spindles of my own but I wanted a few handcrafted wood worked spindles that were small enough to work as decoration on my tree but also would make, excellent traveling companions for smaller spins. I was thrilled to find these three affordable, American made wooden gems on Etsy and could not resist giving them a go.

They arrived quickly and are a fun add to my growing spindle collection. I’m new to Turkish and bottom whorl spindle spinning, so this was a great way for me to expand my horizons. Each of these spin nicely and will be so easy to travel with, and they make the most adorable tree decor.

Question What tool(s) would you recommend?

I have been spinning now for almost 3 weeks. I have completed one 4~ oz ball of yarn. I am currently working with a drop spindle and a ball winder (from knitting and crocheting past) on my next braid of the same wool and color way. What would be the one tool you would recommend for me to get next. I have already ordered my control card. But until I can afford a pretty wooden spinning wheel, I am not sure what accessories I should get. What is your MUST have tool that helps you?

I had my only lesson for an hour on Aug 10th. I finished this last night. I will admit I find every second to spin while working on each of the plys. I did chain plying all last night, my arm was tired this morning. I have been wanting to learn for decades and it just never worked out. But I have to say I am hooked and can’t wait to make more.

Tour de Fleece The progression problem

Post image
70 Upvotes

It all started with the fiber I used to make the granny square yarn 8 years ago, then put away in a dreaded yarn stash to be forgotten about. I got the inspiration to make a go at spinning again with a heavier spindle. Right now I’m loving the Turkish spindle I just got the most. Call it a late TDF show and tell post if you will. Currently working on 300 g of polwarth wool(white skeins), practicing consistency. Now I can’t put the spindle down. It really helps me stay grounded in the hectic chaos we call life.

I got a giant brown fleece with white spots from a local sheep owner (no idea what kind of sheep though, but it’s big!), and it is gorgeous! I combed it, with a double sided dog comb, and I’ll wash it because it’s greasy and dusty. But look how lovely!!

Spun this merino/silk 80/20 mix this week. The fiber looked nice but the color of the single looked a bit sickly and I wasn’t sure the red would work in it.

Still continued on and after the ply I think I love it! Chain plied and pretty much a worsted to chunky weight. This was mostly spun long draw which I have been practicing on my Louët S51 wheel lately.

It’s so soft anf fluffy! I think I love it. Good thing I bought a pound of it! Used 6.34 ounces for 300 yards.

can someone recommend a very good youtube video about hand carding washed fleece? I feel I must be doing it wrong, no matter how many times I card it there is always bits of stuff.

Please excuse the fiber-coated leggings. My husband thinks I've lost my mind because I spent the entire spun telling my yarn how pretty I think it is. I have no idea what this is going to be but tis gonna be against my skin for sure.

Drum Carder Repair

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've been given this ropey old drum carder, if I can get it working i can use it to teach the children i work with how to process the wool from our pet sheep.

Apart from a ruddy good clean it obviously needs a new band- what it the best way to get one that fits? I wound a piece of sting around the wheels and that measured 93cm.

I'm based in the UK if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

I finished my first fractal and I’m so happy with it. I made it with solid colors, not a dyed braid so it’s not exactly perfect but I achieved the overall effect, so I’m satisfied. Also I liked the control I had over the colors with this method. I used my eel wheel 6.1 and is a 40WPI light 2 ply fingering, 150 grams total, merino wool.
