META New Account Participation Requirements
Hi all,
Following a recent exit scam incident on the Discord, we've taken some time to reassess our requirements for accessing & interacting within our community.
This is not the first time it has happened, and may not be the last. I am proud of the collective work the community has done to help those affected, and even members not from our community - thank you u/ptr1337 and the r/CachyOS moderation team for their cooperation.
Effective immediately, all accounts will need to have both:
- A minimum age of 45 days, to post or comment.
- A minimum of 100 combined karma (post & comment karma)
For transparency, the old requirements were as follows:
- Selling posts: 7 days old
- Buying posts: 1 day old
- Commenting: 1 day old
- No minimum karma threshold
We understand this raises the entry barrier a little bit, but believe it's a necessary step to ensure that genuine members are the ones engaging here and not "throwaway" accounts.
Some legitimate users may fall out of this scope and be impacted, we will monitor this over the next several weeks and see if the requirements need tweaking - we urge you not to use karma-farming subreddits to artificially inflate your karma as we will be checking!
Ensure to do your due diligence when trading online, please refresh yourself with this old thread Staying Safe When Trading Hardware
Thank you for your understanding.
Edit:
Please do not use AI to write descriptions or selling points on your posts.

Sorry need to ask as brain not as sharp, that 100 karma is it on this sub or the account itself needs to have 100 or more karma?

For anyone curious and anyone else getting any ideas, the scammer's personal details were obtained and reported to the police.

Seems fair, but what about people like me who have traded a lot on here with no issues but low karma lol

Depends? Charge back through their credit provider or do you mean a dispute on paypal?

Thank you for these new safety measures, they should help the community be less vulnerable to scams. However, I think that 100 combined karma may be a bit too much. Also I think that karma earned from upvote subreddits shouldn’t be counted towards the users earned karma.

I understand your concern, I had looked at other subreddits who impose such requirements and 100 combined karma is still generously low.
I agree, karma farming subreddits shouldn’t be allowed.
