Meta / Other RFK cancels $500 million in vaccine research funding
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/rfk-vaccine-funding-mrna_n_68928569e4b0d3424bc41392"The projects — 22 of them — are being led by some of the nation’s leading pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Moderna to prevent flu, COVID-19 and H5N1 infections."
"Kennedy said in the Tuesday statement that he wants the health department to move away from mRNA vaccines, calling on the department to start “investing in better solutions.” He provided no details on what those technologies might be."

I have (well, had) a number of friends who would often complain, "We have this research to cure something that's just a mild flu. Why isn't anyone working to cure cancer."
Well, this asshole is actively working against it. That's why.

They want us all to die
95
u/SuzannesSaltySeas 22d ago
As someone disabled I believe this is the answer. They want anyone they dub as "problematic" in some way to just go away. When they did away with DEI without making exceptions for disability it has started to feel like it. Hell, they no longer even have signage on the handicapped stalls in the restrooms. We're suddenly living in a world intolerant of disability by design.

Yes, I believe there really is a powerful element in the Trump Admin that really doesn't give a damn if disabled or chronically ill people just die.
I guess they think it frees up more money and resources for them to steal?

Not all. Only those of us they deem to be poor. I would bet my last dollar that all of them will have vaccines that we can't get.

This is when you scream at your friend that some cancers are caused by viruses and then run out of the room.
22
u/Rand_alThoor 22d ago
and we can vaccinate against those viruses that cause those cancers! why bother with a cure, when we can just PREVENT cancer!
3
u/TarHeel2682 22d ago
All cancers can have vaccines if you can find a common target that doesn’t have much, if any, crossover to healthy cells
9
u/ChiefScout_2000 22d ago
Surely cancer is one of the most highly funded research areas.
36
u/rebar_mo Sips Tea Slowly 22d ago
At this point their most highly funded research area is probably "how to redact names from legal documents"
53
u/HonkyMOFO 22d ago
It was at the University level. Not anymore with the cuts to research funding.
-9
u/ricecrystal 22d ago
That’s not true, private industry also conducts cancer research
5
u/HonkyMOFO 22d ago
Yes, if they can profit from it.
-1
u/ricecrystal 22d ago
It's true that private industry profits but that's besides the point that cancer research is ongoing in numerous companies and for many years. There will never be one specific cure for all cancers regardless of profit or nonprofit status.

I have (well, had) a number of friends who would often complain, "We have this research to cure something that's just a mild flu.”
Sure enough, that makes sense. The ones who had something that was a fatal influenza aren’t around to complain any more. They ignore that when they compare covid to “a mild flu”.

I can't find the article but Brainworm has previously talked about using this funding to promote vaccine development using the outdated 1950-60's whole virus method. That was discarded years ago because it carried more risks and side effects than newer methods that have been developed. If I recall, the ones he noted he wanted to lead the development are antivaxxers and mRna misinformation spreaders.
If i find it, I'll post a link.
11
u/Mateorabi 22d ago
See if we use the old riskier methods then their claims about safety/side effects become true. Then they can get rid of even those.

u/kat_fud 21d ago
I don't know if my measles vaccine is still effective, but I can't get a booster if I wanted one because the measles vaccine is an attenuated live virus, and I'm immunocompromised.
2
u/allisondbl 20d ago
If you can’t get a booster get your titers checked and then you will at least KNOW if you’re safe or not.
1
u/Igno-ranter 21d ago
I went to my doc recently and asked about boosters for all the childhood shots. Measles is one I was told no booster is needed.
3
u/kat_fud 21d ago
From this NPR.org article:
. . . public health experts say there are some adults who should consider getting revaccinated. That includes older adults who were born after 1957 and were vaccinated before 1968.
That's because early versions of the measles vaccine were made from an inactivated (killed) virus, which didn't work particularly well, Offit says. That's why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone vaccinated before 1968 get at least one dose of the live attenuated vaccine.
I may have gotten the inactivated virus vaccine.

In a historically unprecedented assembly of dangerous, incompetent unqualified imbeciles masquerading as a cabinet, he is perhaps the most dangerous, most incompetent and most imbecilic of all. He is certainly most likely to be able to cause the death of others through his own fucking ignorance.
His death will be a blessing to the world. I have never rooted for natural causes so hard in my life, but Measles would be especially ironic.

Here's an even more sinister take on this theme.. They want to mass re-import the undocumented workers and put them under working conditions even worse than they have now and don't want the poor white MAGAs to work out just how little they are valued, so they want them out of the way lest they pivot to the left, once they see the right has used and dumped tham.
So much for the "love" of the poorly educated..

"better solutions"?! like the old adage says, 'prevention is better than cure'. vaccination is the very best medicine.
get a jab with a needle, DON'T GET SICK! it really doesn't get better than that.
as someone born in 1941 who survived every childhood illness, i look at the children born now who get vaccinated and think how fortunate they are. truly a sign of advancement of civilisation.
vaccines save lives. Full stop. they prevent an untold amount of suffering and misery.
not investing in vaccine research is unbelievably shortsighted. why try to cure cancer? just vaccinate!
(some cancers are caused by a virus e.g. some cervical cancers in women are caused by HPV, and we have vaccination against HPV now. (this is especially important for EVERYONE to get because in men HPV is asymptomatic. they spread a future cancer but never even know they are causing anything bad) .... there was debate about vaccinating teenagers against HPV, imo it shouldn't be controversial. it's an easy way to eradicate one of the causes of a deadly cancer)
we need MORE funding for MORE research into vaccines, and what we can prevent this way.

Of course he didn’t provide better solutions, it’s all wishful thinking that there are “better options” out there 🤦♂️
6
u/wobblyunionist 22d ago
All viral deaths will fall disproportionately on the poor and disabled - older people tend to be poorer, marginalized groups tend to be poorer. The rich and their political allies will die too but less frequently due to their access to top-notch equipment, facilities, vacation time, etc. It is a eugenics type move for sure, we have to keep fighting and if we can fund our own research and orgs

4
u/CalHap 22d ago
Even if you have a problem with vaccines and don’t think they’re safe, wouldn’t you want research to make them safe? WTF
1
u/eirsquest 19d ago
He just wants to scrap them all. Even if we weren’t cancelling the research, nothing will convince him they’re safe. He needs to be able to blame them for autism. Doesn’t matter that it’s already been proven over and over that vaccines don’t cause autism, he’ll never accept that

If experts aren't reading MLK and planning acts of civil disobedience, it's on them. They need to fucking wake up and realize they have a real responsibility, as people, to protest this shit.
