Making Friends in Hull - Top Tips

Hi everyone,

I was made aware of these reddit threads recently on how to make friends in Hull and thought I should put up a post of tips.

It all really depends on what you’re into and your age etc but there is plenty going on in Hull for people who want to make new friends and socialise so I’m just going to post a couple of things that I’m aware of and feel free to add your own below:

Hull Young Socials: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-Young-Socials/

Hull Young Socials is a free meetup group for people in their 20’s in Hull to meet other people for regular social events. HYS host at least 1 or 2 events per week. The events vary from social drinks at the weekend, quizzes, board & party games nights, coffees, comedy nights, food and any other events that are being held locally in Hull at the time such as Pint of Science, Trinity Live, Sofar Music Gigs, Christmas & Halloween events etc. All that type of stuff. I’ve seen on a number of threads people have joined but didn’t have the courage to go to their first event. If that’s you, I advise you to try it at least once and the worst thing that can happen is that you decide it’s not for you and you don’t go back. Almost everyone falls into two groups in HYS, either (a) you're in your 20's and have moved to Hull for work and don’t know anyone and want to make friends or (b) you're in your 20's and lived in Hull all your life and your friends have either moved on or lost touch and you want to make some more.

Hull & East Riding Social: https://www.meetup.com/HullEastRiding/

Essentially this is the same group as I have described above but the only difference is that it caters for all ages 30+. Again, they hold regular meetups events similar to those above to meet new people and make new friends. If you fall into this category and want to get out and socialise you should definitely join. You just need to make sure you have a name and picture on your account to join.

Hull of a Read Book Group: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-of-a-Read-Bookgroup/

If you’re into reading and literature you should definitely join this group. They have a monthly meetup where they discuss the book of the month which the organiser, Jacob, puts up well in advance giving you time to read it. You don’t even have to have read the book either because they welcome people along to the event just for a social meetup and chat.

HEY (Hull & East Yorkshire) Board Games

A lot of people on these threads have mentioned that they’re into board games and there is a board games meetup but it looks like they haven’t been active in a while. But I do know they have regular board games nights in both The Board Room and Stronghold Games. I’ve visited both these places and the staff were very friendly and encouraged me to come along to other board games nights if I was interested. They’re weekly events and I can’t remember who did what when but give them a call and I’m sure the staff will be able to help you out. So if board games is your thing then definitely give it a go.

Please note that a range of people from different backgrounds attend these groups and the organisers want to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Therefore there is a zero tolerance to bad behaviour, which makes sure everyone you’re meeting is friendly and there to enjoy themselves.

Of course, there are ways of meeting people outside of meetup, if you’re sporty there are plenty of sports teams in Hull to join from 5 a side soccer, men & ladies hockey, swimming, kayaking etc a quick google will sort this out for you.

There are also some language classes in Hull but i'm sure on the details so if you know then add them to the thread.

I know on the other threads people have suggested going to a bar or meeting people at the gym but it’s never worked for me in the past and don’t particularly hold much hope for it in the future either. At least these groups I’ve just pointed out are purposely there for people to make new friends and socialise.

Hope this helps!

What's so bad about Orchard Park?

I'm not from Hull originally and have lived here now for four years. I work in Orchard Park but don't live there, and the times I spend in office are quite short as I do a lot of my work from home. But I always walk to work through Orchard Park and have not really ever seen anything that stands out as one of the worst places to be around here. Obviously I assume that's due either to the time I spend there being better times or my route through the place going through it's better areas maybe.

Are there certain areas of Orchard Park I should avoid and some that are better? Or is it just made out to be worse than it is?

Please Help: Need Help Finding Accommodation Replacement.

Hi all. I've made a stupid mistake with an accommodation contract. i'm a master's student starting later this month at Hull Uni. I'm now in a situation where I have this contract which I signed a few days back (My guarantor did NOT sign it) but now I can't follow through with it. It was a careless mistake on my part, i should've never signed it without being certain of my future, but i thought i could cancel it later. When i called up the agency, they said ut was impossible to cancel and i'd have to find a replacement. I'm panicking like crazy right now because if i don't manage to find someone, i'd have to pay the full rent. There's literally no way i cam afford to pay the full rent now. I'm completely helpless and would greatly appreciate if anyone with need for accommodation would contact me and take over my contract.

the rent is 112 per week including utilities.

Sorry for the desperate tone. I'd really appreciate any form of help or advice. if you know someone in need of accommodation, would you be so kind as to put them in contact with me. please dm me if you need a room. thank you very much.

Seasonal work at the new Amazon in North Ferriby.

Just posted this elsewhere but might help to share for everybody.

https://www.jobsatamazon.co.uk/app#/jobSearch

Search at 3 hourly intervals from 12 and keep refreshing.

12am, 3am, 6am, 9am, 12pm etc ...

You'll see Hull pop up for their new site about to open this month.

You can apply to any Amazon if hulls not there just to get your application done.

After, importantly, you'll need to select a shift at Hull to finish the process. There are loads of shift patterns to choose. You just need right to work to be employed.

You have to be quick as the shifts dont stay long as others pick them quickly

The jobs main drop times are daily at 3am and 3pm

Friday and Saturdays are the biggest drops.

Keep refreshing until 30 minutes past the hour if there's no drops then leave it and try after the next 3 hour interval. The jobs tend to drop anytime in that 30 minute period

Good luck

60th Birthday venue

Need some help finding somewhere for a 60th birthday party

Looking at somewhere that will do a buffet for us and isn’t massively expensive, as well as being in hull town centre so it’s central for all guests (50 ish)

I’ve looked at a couple of places and they either have rooms to rent but without a bar in or they play music a bit too modern for the tastes of the birthday girl lol

TIA

Aquascaper or Fish Tank Enthusiast?

Hi all!

I am an ex-Fishkeeper hobbyist and have been considering getting back into the hobby.

I was wondering if anybody has some spare equipment, be it a spare tank, a filter, a heater, maybe even some filter media to help me get back into the hobby? Obviously not asking for free, as I know how incredibly expensive the hobby is.

Even more so, anybody that enjoys aquascaping that would love to design my tank for me, should I get things going? And I'd be happy to pay for the materials used as well.

I just really miss keeping fish, and seeing other peoples tanks on social media makes me feel "broody" hahaha

Crackdown on international students could hurt struggling UK cities, thinktank warns

Thumbnail theguardian.com

... While stating that a crackdown on the higher education sector could have a negative impact for the country at large, Centre for Cities said the impact would be more heavily felt in cities including Leicester, Plymouth, Hull and Stoke-on-Trent.

This is because their local universities play an outsized role in supporting jobs, economic activity and exports in these places compared with more prosperous university towns such as Oxford and Cambridge...
