interview, discussion Looking for expats in Budapest to share their stories on a podcast
I’m starting a new podcast series called Witty Expats, where I talk to people about what life is really like abroad — the good, the bad, and the funny in-between moments.
I’m looking for 2–3 expats (or even former expats) from Budapest (Sept 25) to join me for a relaxed chat. Topics could include: • Job opportunities • Dating & relationships • Housing & cost of living • Bureaucracy • Interaction with locals • Culture shocks & funny stories
If you’re interested, here’s a quick form to apply 👉 https://forms.gle/hEJ2e65X7Xmhw2vy9
No need to prepare anything formal — just come and share your experience. Would love to feature voices from this community!

Gift for Hungarian Cousin?
Sziasztok! I know this is not news related, but I have hopes that someone in this thread might be able to help? My Hungarian cousin 32 years old, male, will be visiting Canada and I will be driving up from America to meet him. Anyone have any idea of something fun to bring him from the states? In the past, he has asked me to ship him certain skincare brands… but I was hoping to find something a bit more “fun” or less readily available in Hungary.
If anyone has an idea, let me know ❤️
Köszi!!

Is Budapest better than Prague for life?
🇭🇺 Why Some Prefer Living in Budapest Over Prague:
1. Lower Cost of Living
- Budapest is generally cheaper in terms of rent, food, and transportation, especially outside the city center.
- While both cities are affordable compared to Western Europe, Budapest often offers more value for money.
2. Larger and More Diverse City
- Budapest is bigger in both population and area, offering a more diverse range of neighborhoods, experiences, and job opportunities.
- Feels more like a major metropolis—more vibrant, more events, more nightlife options.
3. Thermal Baths and Natural Beauty
- The city's famous thermal bath culture (e.g. Széchenyi, Gellért) adds a unique wellness and relaxation aspect to daily life.
- The Danube River and the contrast between Buda’s hills and Pest’s flat urban sprawl make for a more dramatic and scenic cityscape.
4. Better Public Transportation Coverage
- Budapest has a very efficient, comprehensive, and cheap public transit system, including trams, metros, buses, and even boats on the Danube.
- Night buses and trams run more frequently than in Prague.
5. More International Community (in some areas)
- Budapest has seen a growing digital nomad and expat population, especially since Hungary introduced its “White Card” digital nomad visa.
6. Creative and Startup Scene
- Budapest is becoming known for its tech and startup ecosystem, especially in gaming, software, and fintech.
- Coworking spaces and innovation hubs are cheaper and plentiful.
⚖️ But Consider:
- Hungarian is harder to learn than Czech, which can be isolating.
- Some people find Prague cleaner and more “polished” in terms of infrastructure.
- Prague has arguably better English proficiency, especially among service workers.
✅ In Summary:
Choose Budapest if you want:
- Lower prices
- A bigger, more varied city
- Thermal baths and dramatic architecture
- Lively nightlife and growing expat/startup communities
Prague might be better if you prefer:
- A smaller, more walkable city
- Slightly better public cleanliness and infrastructure
- A more “Westernized” feel

Moving to Budapest for a Master’s — Tips on public transport & daily essentials?
Hi everyone, I’ll be moving to Budapest this September for a Master’s program and I’m trying to get ready for a smooth transition into daily life.
I’d really appreciate any tips or recommendations on:
Best SIM card providers for students (good data plans, easy setup) How to get around the city efficiently (monthly passes, student discounts, apps to use) Any essential apps or services locals rely on (for transport, food, delivery, etc.)
Thanks in advance — any advice would be super helpful!

Health Insurance for Job-seeker visa
Hi! Could anyone recommend health insurance plans that would suit for job-seeker visa application? As I understand it has to be a private company, not a taj-card, right?

speech, talk Hungarian grammer and stuff
Hey guys,
I've been trying to learn Hungarian with duolingo for the past couple of months, because I will go on vacation there this summer. One thing that I can't seem to understand though, is one time I'm supposed to say "Te magyar vagy.", but another time I'm supposed to leave 'Te' out of the sentence. I know it means you, and in English and in my first language, Dutch, there is always such a pronouns in the sentence. Is this also the case in Hungarian? Because now I feel like I might be learning the language in a way that isn't correct.

I learned of a city from austria-hungary and it was called Birzaszka. What would the modern name be for it today? Where exactly is it located now? Would it be Orsava?
