Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

Has your dog's breed been solved?

Once you're satisfied with your responses, please change your link flair to SOLVED. (Please don't make a post if your dog's breed is already solved/known)

/r/IDmyDog needs mod(s) to combat anti-Pit Bull brigading

Recently there has been a sharp uptick in comments from trolls brigading us from anti Pit Bull subreddits.

Harassing users for owning Pit Bulls is considered uncivil and off topic behavior, and not what this subreddit is for.

The pit bull conversation is one worth having, but not at the expense of derailing the function of this subreddit.

So in the meantime we're going to do 2 things:

  1. Get some mod(s) that can help tackle the issue with harassment and off topic comments. If you are interested in helping with this, please leave a comment below explaining why you're fit for the task.

  2. Create a subreddit wiki page or megathread post that informs and discusses the Pit Bull topic in a civil and unbiased manner, so that the rest of the subreddit isn't overrun with it. If you would like to contribute to this project, please leave a comment below or a modmail.

Rescue dog from Costa Rica - What breed is he?

He is about five years old and is a mix rescue. He is squirrel obsessed, chases them up trees. Strong prey and food drive, he gets along well with dogs and people. Cats he knows he gets along with but ones he doesn't know he can chase. Generally nonchalant temperament but very loving with his family.

Just for fun - what kind of poodle mix do you think he is?

Hi everyone! About a month ago I adopted two poodle mixes and one is likely a bichon-poodle but this lil guy is a mystery. This is Max or “Magic Max” or “Maxiboy” as I like to call him and he is 8 years old. I suspect shih tzu or perhaps Maltese! He’s 15 lbs and has a longer body and legs than a mini poodle. Plus his fur is definitely more on the straight side. He has a snaggle tooth, not sure if he was born that way or not. The third photo is with his brother, Teddy.

This dog showed up at my house a few weeks ago and I am curious to what breed he is. I have been feeding him. He is shy sometimes he will let me pet him other times he stays away. He doesn’t know any commands. But he stays in our yard and we don’t have a fence and we live in the middle of nowhere in the country on a dead end road.

I recently lost my dog and then I saw this dog (3rd picture), assumingly a stray, outside our building. I want to look for a dog that looks like him but I'm not sure how to search for his pattern.

I collect antique photos of dogs and try to get as much information about them as I can.

Any ideas on this breed? I'm thinking American Bull Terrier.

Unfortunately there's no date on the photo - the back is marked Flandreau, South Dakota.

Can anyone give me their best guess?

A little background on Poncho. He is 7 years old. I was told he is a chihuahua mix (which I do believe) but I’m not sure what he would be mixed with. He’s very calm, quiet, affectionate, smart, he doesn’t like to bark, when other dogs bark he just looks at them like “wtf”. In the years I’ve had him, he’s barked maybe 4 times and each time it was because I didn’t hear someone at our door. His bark isn’t repetitive either, it’s one loud, singular bark. He likes children and other people, he likes cats and other dogs but he HATES rats and mice (he seems to have a high prey drive specifically towards rodents (???). He can be both lazy and energetic depending on what everyone around him is doing. He also likes to swim. Traits in him that are pronounced: He has very big ears, a very deep chest, a long face and his dark coat looks reddish brown with a black stripe down his back (in the sun). Give me your best guess on what he could possibly be mixed with.

This is harley! She’s about two years old and was found as a stray by the shelter and then we adopted her. We were told she was a sapsali terrier mix. if you don’t know the sapsali is a rare breed from korea which i’m no where near lol, so i’m thinking it must be something else. We call her our frankendog because i’ve never met another dog that looks or acts like her. There are two breeds i’m leaning more towards her having in her which are husky for multiple different reasons (fur coloring, she can be very talkative, the curly tail, her nose coloring, etc) and poodle because of the weird coat texture, but i’m curious to see what everyone else thinks!

Coco The Shelter Dog

This is Coco. My daughter picked out from the shelter in January 2025. She was found on a box behind a gas station with her two sisters. The sisters looked way more Australian shepherd than she does (though I haven’t seen the sisters since adoption in January). She’s about 10 months now. The shelter said she’s a Manchester Terrier mix. I think that was just a wild guess. She’s 50 lbs right now. She talks like a husky but herds my five year old like a cattle dog. We are in California. Ive had someone ask me if she’s part Kelpie. People have also guessed part German shepherd. Shes so sweet to my daughter. We love her so much and we don’t really care what her breed turns out to be, but just curious what others think. My daughter calls her “sister” since I’m not having any more kids 😊

They say you can tell your dog is part Ridgeback by the line of their back. Is this what they mean? She gets a lot of comments saying she's also part hound (which I believe), but her origin still remains a mystery😂

Attaching other photos as well cuz she's very pretty😍

Curious what others think he might be. He's a rescue that was found loose, so the poor boy has no history. He's thought to be 3 to 4 years. I know what the rescue thinks he is, but I don't want to bias anyone's opinion. He has back dewclaws and is about 65 pounds. Rescued from Arkansas.

She’s half a year old, herding qualities, and just the biggest love storm you’ve ever met. I’m thinking Aussie/Plott hound. Y’all?
